Trend-Filled Thursdays: Colored Corners

Some trends are blatant and in your face. (It's kind of hard to ignore black lipstick or huge, crimped hair.) But others are a bit more subtle ... like the inspiration for this week's Trend-Filled Thursdays column, for instance. Seen in more Fall 2008 shows than one might expect was the use of colored eyeliner put just in the corners of the eyes. This added just the right pop of color and really punched up the overall look! Designers like Anna Sui, Michael Kors and Oscar de la Renta played it safe with yellow or white liner at the inside corners, while the models at Lanvin and Badgley Mischka showcased bolder hues like green and navy. Even Rodarte got in on the act, but in opposite -- models walked the runways with vibrant magenta shadow angled at the outer corners.

What's truly amazing about this trend is that the rest of your makeup can be as subtle or as bold as you want it to be. Nude glossy lips, stained red lips, bright pink blush, clear matte skin ... the choice is up to you! If you're looking for a way to create that certain je ne sais quoi with your makeup this season, this is most definitely the way to go. Read on to find out how to get the look!

ExampleMetallic yellowish-gold liner created a chic spin on the usual white liner we're always told to put in the inside corners. Bourjois Metallic Eyeliner in Fil D'Or ($12.50) is formulated with Vitamin E and jojoba oil for such a silky feel. Make a triangle shape toward your upper and lower lashlines and smudge slightly.
ExampleKeep cheeks and lids fresh and clean to really make the liner pop. Finish with a subtle pinkish-coral lipstick like Bobbi Brown Lip Crayon in Naked Pink ($22), which glides on smoothly and lasts for hours.

ExampleDeep green liner accented by rose blush created a beautiful wash of color at Badgley Mischka. Stila Kajal Eye Liner in Emerald ($16.50) is a beautiful forest green that's easily blendable. Swipe a tiny hint of this shade at the lower lash line and extend out ever so slightly.
ExampleA deep pink blush swept over the eyes and cheekbones -- yes, you can put blush on your eyes! -- will really make this look flirty and feminine. Choose a shade like NARS Powder Blush Cheek Color in Mata Hari ($25), a dark pink that really lends a sense of vibrancy when swept from the lids and cheekbones toward the hairline.
ExampleFinish the look with a glossy nude lip. Benefit The Gloss in Chaperone ($14) is a sandy beige that creates such a pretty finish -- and it smells like apricot-lychee!

ExampleExampleExampleThis look might just be this beauty chick's favorite. A subtle metallic yellow liner in just the very inner corners -- like e.l.f. Brightening Eye Liner in Gilded ($1) -- is accented by amber shadow, black liner and charcoal shadow at the outer corners for such a unique take on the cat eye look. Bloom Cosmetics Eye Shadow in Butterfly ($14.40) is perfect for the amber shadow swept across the lid, while Clinique Colour Surge Eye Shadow Velvet in Black Velvet ($14) is sultry, seductive and can even be used as a liner!
ExampleA glossy pink lip is super-feminine and girly, and creates the perfect foil to the dramatic eye seen here. Bonne Bell Smackers Liquid Star Shine in Melon Moon ($3.50) lends an iridescent shine to your pout.

The look couldn't get more different than at Rodarte! Rather than keeping the color in the inner corners, the models here showcased vibrant magenta liner at the outer corners. When combined with a pink shadow, swept up past the creases and toward the brows, the look is one of urban glamour.
ExamplePhilosophy's The Supernatural Fingerpaints Color Trio in Cool ($25) contains three multipurpose shadows in various shades of pink that can be mixed, matched and combined every which way to create the look here.
ExampleA just-bitten lip stain in deep, bold crimson or garnet is the perfect finishing touch. It walks the line beautifully between ethereal elegance and glamorous vixen. Try Hard Candy Stain & Shine in Stop! ($15), a dual-ended stain with red berry at one end and a clear gloss at the other. Slick on a ton of it and then blot with a tissue to get that I-just-ate-lunch-and-don't-feel-like-reapplying-my-lipgloss look.

I like when the accents are made on eyes, I think, with such eyes' make up women look sexier.
