It is my privilege to bring you this week's edition of First Look Fridays, featuring Anne Fritz of The Jet Set Girls. JSG is one of my daily blog reads because of its insightful commentary, fabulous fashion and beauty finds, and of course -- the amazing travel information! I also absolutely love the "A Peek Inside" feature, with exciting peeks inside the bags from some of the most amazing people in the fashion and beauty industry. (A recent article featured celeb stylist Danilo.) Read on to discover even more about the amazing Anne!
Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
I'm a total city girl! I grew up near Washington, D.C. and knew I wanted to move to NYC after college, which is exactly what I did. I came here with two friends the month after I graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in magazine journalism. I didn't have a job, but I had ambition and passion to spare! I landed a spot at a real estate trade magazine (glamorous, I know!) in the month that I moved here. From there, I went on to Woman's Day and Life & Style.
Why did you decide to start your blog?
Hope Schmid, my co-blogger and best friend since I was 8, and I came up with the idea for The Jet Set Girls on a bachelorette trip to Vegas in April 2007. We had such fun researching everything about Vegas -- which hotel has the best clubs, the best pools, shopping, figuring out if the Hard Rock was too young for us that we decided we wanted to do something about girls' getaways.
I love the name of your blog! How did you come up with it?
Thanks! Originally it was between "Carry On," which I liked for the double entendre, and The Jet Set Girls. Everyone seemed to like JSG better, so I was outvoted.
Do you have a "day job?" What is it?
I work two days a week at EverydayHealth.com. I also freelance copywrite -- recently I've worked on Sephora's fall catalog and on the website for two Baltimore-based plastic surgeons.
What have been some of the highlights of having your blog?
No question it's all the great people I've met! It's really opened up my world. Bloggers are so nice and friendly! Everyone really wants to help each other out and see everyone succeed. I've also been invited to some really cool events that I never would have been invited to, even as an editor, like the Louis Vuitton Cruise presentation and Boucheron pop-up store opening party. I'm also learning SO much more about the Web 2.0. At first it was like a whole new language, but I'm slowly getting the hang of it all.
What are your top 5 beauty essentials?
1) Bumble and bumble Hair Powder -- Because I color my hair, I try to wash it once a week or less. I could never get by without it!
2) Clinique Lash Power Mascara -- My eyes tend to be teary, but this mascara never budges! It won't smudge when you're wearing concealer, either.
3) Prescriptives All Weather Friend SPF 40 -- I'm SPF-obsessed to the point where my doctor makes me take Vitamin D supplements. This one is the only SPF 40 that I know of that absorbs so readily. It's tiny, too, so you can carry it on the plane, even with the liquid restrictions.
4) Olay Ribbons Body Wash -- My skin is SO dry, so I don't use soap. This really moisturizes as well as cleans.
5) Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer -- I don't like products that feel thick or heavy on my skin. This evens out my skin tone and is super-light, it doesn't feel like you're wearing anything.
What brands can you simply not live without?
Prescriptives, M.A.C, Kate Somerville, Mario Badescu, Stila, OPI, Bumble and bumble, Kerastase and Davines.
Playing with products must be fun -- but what are some things you do for fun outside of blogging?
Ha! I love to travel, of course! I also like to bike ride -- it's how I met my boyfriend -- practice yoga, spend time with my adorable nieces and nephew (all under 5), shop and cook. I moved recently, so we're also spending a lot of time decorating -- though I'm not sure I would call that fun!
Are there any other beauty blogs you read regularly? What are some that you like and why?
1) Yours, of course! (Editor's note: Awww. Thanks, Anne!)
2) I also love All About the Pretty -- no one knows products better than Julia.
3) Beauty's SPOT -- for its organic focus.
4) The Daily Obsession -- for the luxe pics.
5) Sephora's Beauty and the Blog -- for their insider info.
Thanks so much to Anne Fritz of The Jet Set Girls for this fabulous interview! Now be sure to head over to her site immediately!
