Mary Steenburgen Shows Us How Pretty Is Done.

I've loved Mary Steenburgen since the early 90s. Remember her fabulous turns in Parenthood and Back to the Future 3? I've always thought she possessed an extra-special something that just stood out and made her all the more beautiful. And at the Atlantic Theater Company's Spring 2009 Gala on April 27, she just looked radiant.

I love the sideswept bangs. I love the black-lined eyes. I love the pink lips. But most of all, I love that she looks current and on-trend but age-appropriate. Well played, Mary Steenburgen. Well played.

Um, Sarah Jessica Parker? Why?

Every time I see Sarah Jessica Parker on the red carpet, I just have to wonder why she's not channeling more Carrie Bradshaw. She never looks as pulled together in real life, does she? And at the Wonderful World premiere during the Tribeca Film Festival on April 27, such was the case again. Her hair was lank with tons of frizz at the back, leading me to believe she forgot to run a comb through it before leaving the house. Her eye makeup was way too dark, which worked to make her look older than she is and really overpowered her face. Her blush wasn't blended enough, giving her a bit of a clown look. And the lipstick just isn't a good color for her.

My only question is, why? Seriously, why? I just don't get it. Do you? Let me know in the comments!

What is Going on with Miley Cyrus's Lips?

I don't think it's any secret that I'm not the biggest fan of Miley Cyrus. But I do think she's a pretty girl ... so the fact that her lips are looking more and more like they've been injected with tons of collagen just really scares me. She's a teenager, after all! And at the premiere of Hannah Montana: The Movie in Paris on April 27, that top lip just didn't look right. Not to mention her updo doesn't do anything for her pretty features.

What do you think about Miley's lips? Do you think she's had collagen injections? Let me know in the comments!

Emma Stone Rocks the Reverse Cat Eye ... But Does it Work?

I'm a huge fan of the reverse cat eye look. I think it's dramatic, fun and can look utterly gorgeous. But I'm torn on Emma Stone's take on it, seen at the premiere of Ghosts of Girlfriends Past on April 27 in LA. I like the liner at her inner corners, I do. But I think it might just be a touch too heavy for her features.

I will say this -- her auburn curls make me so jealous I could die!

What do you think of Emma's look? Do you like the eyeliner, or do you think she should have kept her inner corners free of color? Let me know in the comments!

Halle Berry May Want to Redo Her Highlights.

Oh, Halle Berry. I want to like your new hairstyle, because I really do think you're gorgeous. But these highlights that you rocked at the X-Men Origins: Wolverine premiere on April 28 just really didn't work. They're too chunky, they expose your roots and they're just not a good color for you. So I'm sorry, but your hairstylist has some work to do.

Um, Hilary Duff? I Want Your Lipgloss.

Sometimes I'm not totally on board with the hair and makeup looks Hilary Duff comes up with. But I am totally and completely head over heels for the lipgloss she wore to the DIRECTV Tribeca Press Center on April 23. It's the perfect shade of peach/coral/nude that looks good day or night.

What do you think? Are you loving Hilary's lipgloss, or do you think a different shade would have looked better? Let me know in the comments!

Alexis Bledel's Red Lipstick: Yay or Nay?

Okay, fellow beauty chicks. Time to weigh in on Alexis Bledel's lipstick at the Chanel and Tribeca Film Festival Artists' Dinner on April 23. While I applaud Ms. Bledel for making a bold choice on the red carpet, I think this color is a bit too harsh for her complexion. It somehow succeeds at both looking garish and making her complexion look washed out and ruddy at the same time. I would have loved to see a pink on her -- I think it would have looked better.

What do you think? Are you loving the red lipstick on Alexis Bledel? Or do you think she should have made a different choice? Let me know in the comments!

The Side Braid Makes a Comeback!

To date, one of my most popular posts has been the one on the side braid. (Click here for a refresher course.) You know the one -- it's what Lauren Conrad made famous last year on The Hills. Well, it's making a comeback! Check out the new celebs rocking it after the jump.

Rachel Roy pulls hers over with a deep side part and pairs it with a deep brick lipstick at the Obsessed premiere in New York on April 23

Truly Covetable Red Locks from Rachel Boston

Remember the show American Dreams, featuring a young Brittany Snow and Milo Ventimiglia? I totally loved the show and was so sad when it got canceled. Anyway, I always loved Rachel Boston on that show -- she looked every bit the 60s girl during the time of American Bandstand. I haven't seen much of her recently, but she showed up to the opening of the new Chloe boutique in LA on April 23 rocking such a gorgeous auburn mane that I seriously wish I could cut it off and put it on my head instead. It's reminiscent of Lindsay Lohan's hair in Mean Girls, don't you think?

So what do you think of Rachel's locks? Are you coveting them as much as this beauty chick? Or do you think she should have gone for a different color? Let me know in the comments!

First Look Fridays: Makeup Artist Christopher Drummond

Want a makeup artist who knows his stuff? Then you'd better turn to Christopher Drummond. With over 15 years of experience in the beauty industry and his own makeup line, he knows beauty inside and out. Find out what makes him tick after the jump.

Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
I was raised in Flint, Michigan. I am bi-racial (black and Italian), and was raised by a white family (I was adopted at the age of eight weeks). We had seven people in total in our family -- a lot like Diff'rent Strokes meets The Brady Bunch.

I went to the University of Michigan, got a BA in Mass Communications. From there, I worked in TV/news production for three years, which was soooo stressful. All the while I was acting and modeling on the side. My dream was to act full-time.

I moved to Miami and lived there for nine years, where I cultivated my makeup skills. I then got a job opportunity to relocate to NYC, and I took it!

How did you first become interested in makeup, and what led you to become a makeup artist?
I started in this business as a total fluke. I was a fashion model, and I hated how makeup artists always used the wrong colors on my skin. I went to the Bobbi Brown counter to buy some makeup. I hit it off with the manager, and she said, “I can tell you’d be a great makeup artist!” She offered me a job on the spot (I wasn’t even looking for a job at the time). My passion for makeup and skincare blossomed from there.

Have you worked with any makeup artists who inspired you? What did they teach you?
I worked quite a bit with Scott Barnes (Jennifer Lopez’s personal makeup artist). He created the “JLO Glow." I learned a thing or two from him! He’s an expert at giving a “lit from within” type of glow. I took some things he taught me and incorporated my own style to create my trademark look.

Overall, I think all makeup artists borrow from each other. There is no one artist that owns the business ... we are all constantly learning and creating from each other.

What are some of the moments that have stood out as highlights in your career?
Honestly, I don’t have just one. But I would say this January was a biggie, when we were able to officially launch Christopher Drummond Beauty. Three years of blood, sweat and tears (literally) had come to fruition. Since then, it has been a different hill to climb. Creating the philosophy of the brand and the products/packaging was one thing. Now we are on to promoting the lifestyle that comes with the brand. Definitely a challenge, because we are doing something new and different, and not everybody gets it.

What are the products and brands you simply can't live without?
Saúde Pele Radiance Booster is amazing to me. I asked myself, “What is a product that anyone and everyone can wear, that will make the skin look healthy and luminous?” Saúde Pele was my answer. Men, women, old, young, black, white: this product was made for everyone. I love it.

What are your top 3 makeup tips?
1) Be yourself. Find out what you like, and what makes you feel good, and go with it. Don’t rely on someone else to tell you what “your colors” are. Only you know what you feel best in.

2) Less is more. Don’t overdo it. Too much glitter and glam can make a woman look like the mother of a Solid Gold dancer. Have fun with makeup, but know the limits of your face.

3) The basics never let you down. It’s fine to play with color, but there is nothing like the basics to make you look and feel your best. Of course “the basics” is a relative term for everyone. However, once you find what your basics are, hold on to them -- they always work!!!!

What is the most rewarding part of what you do?
I wish I could say the pat answer “I love to help people." This is absolutely true. But more importantly to me, is doing what makes me feel good about myself. I have no problem saying that I look to things that make me feel good. After all, if I feel good, then I can help others to feel the same. I like to take a selfish ideal and make it helpful for everyone.

Being a makeup artist must be fun -- but what do you do for fun when you're not playing with makeup?
I hate it when people say this, but I literally don’t have time for fun. Now is the time for me to totally concentrate on building this company -- nurturing it. It takes so much time and energy. If we do it right, there will be a big payoff. Until then, I will enjoy the little things: going to the gym, an occasional night out to dinner. I am just too obsessed with making my business work to have fun right now. To me, this IS fun and rewarding!!!!! I’m doing what I love, so even work is a joy.

Beauty Question: What Nail Polish Are You Wearing?

I'm sure we all have our nail polish painting rituals. Some of us go to the salon or the walk-in nail places scattered along the street. Others, like this beauty chick, paint them on Sunday evenings while we watch Brothers and Sisters. (Hey, whatever works.) Well, this week I decided to treat myself to quite the springy color -- Chanel Orange Fizz -- and I must say, I am loving it! It's bright but not too orangey -- it looks just like an orange popsicle but a bit creamier in texture. No streaking, no clumping, no gooeyness to speak of -- it just glided right onto the nail and seriously has been punching up every outfit I've worn this week!

So my current Beauty Question is this. What nail polish are you wearing? Let me know in the comments!

What Do You Think of Debra Messing's Blunt Hairstyle?

I'm feeling a bit upset by Debra Messing's new hairstyle, which she wore to Cookie Magazine's 3rd Annual Smart Cookie Awards on April 20. I usually really love Debra's hair, especially since she's not afraid to wear it curly a la Carrie Bradshaw's mention of "Crazy Katie" in Sex and the City. (Remember that?) Well, methinks Debra Messing should have worn her hair curly yesterday, because something about the super straight style and the bluntness of it just don't sit right with me.

What do you think? Are you liking this style on Debra Messing, or would you rather see her voluminous curls? Let me know in the comments!

A Rosy Outlook with M.A.C Fix+ Rose

Run, don't walk to your nearest M.A.C counter when Rose Romance hits counters this Wednesday. As you could probably tell from my earlier post, I'm completely enamored of everything in this collection. But the product I'm most excited about? M.A.C Fix+ Rose.

Now, I know that at first glance it doesn't look like much. It's just some clear liquid in a plain plastic bottle, you're thinking. What could be so special about it? Well, let me tell you something. Looks can be quite deceiving! A few spritzes of this luxuriously fragrant rosewater-scented liquid upon your visage and you'll be singing a different tune.

A blend of green tea, chamomile and cucumber melds with vitamins and minerals to seal your makeup and add tons of radiance and shine to your look. You may be thinking this is impossible ... but this beauty chick tried it and all I can say is WOW! My skin looked fresh and clean, and I smelled absolutely divine. And an added bonus? There's no need for perfume when you spritz yourself with it!

M.A.C Fix+ Rose will be available at M.A.C counters nationwide beginning April 23.

Two of the Best Products Ever, Courtesy of Guerlain

Anyone who knows me knows that I'm a sucker for great packaging. And I must say that Guerlain does great packaging like no other. Every single product from this brand feels so beautifully luxurious, you feel terrible using it because then it will disappear! (Case in point: the Guerlain Mysterious Butterfly Eyeshadow Palette from Spring 2009. Have you ever seen anything more beautiful?) Well, I've recently come across two more products to add to my Guerlain stash ... find out what they are after the jump.

First up, Guerlain L'Or Radiance Concentrate with Pure Gold ($70). Before I even get into the amazingness of this product, let's just take a minute to admire its beauty, shall we? Drops of pure gold are suspended within a clear liquid, creating an unbelievably amazing prismatic effect that just gleams and glistens from anywhere on your nightstand or vanity. I have to admit it's tough for me to advocate using something this gorgeous ... though I did, in the interest of bringing you a true and honest review. And though it pained me to pump out even a small fraction of this serum, I did ... and to amazing results! It gives skin an evenness and a glowy radiance that could only come from massaging pieces of gold into its outer layers, all while smelling like freshly cut roses. Only a very small amount is necessary to achieve the desired results -- which is good, since you'll want this to last for months and months!

Moving on, we have the Guerlain Meteorites Perles Light-Diffusing Perfecting Primer ($66). Again, the packaging is so luxe, it becomes hard to even use the product! Tiny pink balls are suspended in a clear floral-scented serum, giving it a playful and fun look that's still completely uppercrust. But once you bring yourself to use the primer, you'll be amazed at the results. A pale creamy pink liquid pumps out of the bottle, and trust me, you only need a very small amount to make skin glow. Once applied, skin will be even and left with a subtle shimmer that will have everyone wondering about your secret to perfection.

Drew Barrymore at the LA Premiere of Grey Gardens: Is it a Hit or a Miss?

I'm not really sure what to think of Drew's look at the premiere of Grey Gardens in Los Angeles on April 16. On the one hand, she looked absolutely stunning at the New York premiere a few days ago...

But here's what she looked like last night...

Something just doesn't feel right. I see she's still rocking the bubblegum pink lipstick she's been seeing more than once (click here and here for proof), and I actually like it on her -- even though it clashes with the oversized bib necklace. I'm also completely in love with the smoky eye -- I think it adds just the right amount of sexiness to her flowy dress. But the hair just seems a bit too big and crazy for my taste. Maybe if it didn't look like a bouffant in the back it would work better for me, especially since it just seems an odd pairing with the pale pink lip.

What do you think? Do you love Drew's look, or do you wish she would have toned it down a bit? Let me know in the comments!

No, Solange Knowles. Just No.

Okay, I have to put my foot down here. I'm all for experimenting with blue eyeshadow. But when it's drawn across the bridge of your nose, as is displayed on Solange Knowles here, it just crosses over into such weird territory it becomes almost impossible to form sentences to describe just how awful it really is. I assume she was trying to match her eyeshadow to her Chanel handbag, and that's fine. But why not keep it on your eyes? That's why it's called eyeshadow. This is just a fail.

What do you think? Do you applaud Solange's individuality, or do you think she looks absolutely ridiculous? Let me know in the comments!

First Look Fridays: Eva Chen of Teen Vogue

The magazine I absolutely have to read cover to cover when it arrives in my mailbox every month? Teen Vogue. This magazine is, without a doubt, one of the best ones on the newsstand today. And my favorite section is -- of course! -- the beauty section, headed by fabulous Beauty Director Eva Chen. Eva also writes Beauty Blogger, the Teen Vogue beauty blog, which is chock full of fun and interesting info including interviews with top hair and makeup artists and in-depth product reviews. So I am absolutely and utterly thrilled to bring you this week's edition of First Look Fridays, featuring the one and only Eva Chen of Teen Vogue! Read on to discover how she got her start in the industry and her favorite part of being on the Teen Vogue staff.

Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
I grew up in New York City and went to college at John Hopkins University in Baltimore. Unsurprisingly (or perhaps so, considering what I'm doing now), I was pre-med. I was pre-med for about three years. I took a summer off to do something completely "crazy" and off-the-cuff for me. So I interned at Harper's Bazaar. I was a joint intern between features and beauty. It was amazing!

How did you first become interested in beauty?
Well, that internship really opened me up to the possibility of working at a magazine as a career. I think, at least when I was growing up, there was a premium placed on "pre-professional" jobs like doctors, lawyers, bankers, etc. It never even occurred to me that working at a magazine was a possibility. My first day at Bazaar consisted of brainstorming beauty trends, writing a memo for my supervisor, organizing the beauty closet ... it was heaven!

And, in retrospect, I realize that beauty has always been a passion for me. I was That Girl who could spend hours and hours perusing the makeup counters at Bendel's or even Duane Reade!

What is the most fun part of being the Beauty Director at Teen Vogue?
I love that every day is different. And, of course, interfacing with teens. They're inspiring!

Writing for teens is so much different than writing for adults. How do you approach beauty to make it more fun?
The great thing about the Teen Vogue reader is that she's sophisticated. I find that I don't have to write differently at all to her -- she is just as easy to talk to as a woman in her 20s! However, the topic matter can be different. Say, Robert Pattinson versus George Clooney. (Editor's note: Ah, a beauty editor who understands the glory that is Robert Pattinson!)

How did the Teen Vogue beauty blog come to be, and what is your favorite part of writing for it?
The blog came about out of sheer overabundance! There are hundreds of thousands of products I love, but simply not enough space to put them in-book. I wanted to find a way to write about beauty in a quick/easy/conversational way. It's also more personal -- I write about my likes, dislikes, what's on my wish list, the list goes on and on!

What have been some of the highlights in your career?
Each year, Teen Vogue does a program called Fashion University, in which thousands of teens come to listen about careers in fashion/magazines. I LOVE meeting these girls and seeing how passionate they are! Creating the blog and getting a cadre of loyal readers has been really fulfilling as well. And working with everyone here at Teen Vogue -- the photographers, stylists, etc -- has been amazing! Hopefully there are more highlights to come!

What are your top 5 beauty essentials and why?
1) SPF. I like Clarins Bright Plus Daily Moisturizer and Aveeno Calming SPF. Skin cancer runs in my family, so...

2) Retin-A. EVERY derm I talk to says that a topical retinoid is the best thing outside of the fountain of youth.

3) Healthy diet. I try to eat mostly vegetables and a lot of fish. All the cells in your body are built on the food/nutrients you give it.

4) Shu Uemura lash curler. I would not be able to survive without it!

5) Sleep. I need at least 8 hours a night to function! Plus, my skin looks super-dull if I'm sleep-deprived.

What brands can you simply not live without?
Dr. Hauschka for lip balm, Aveeno for bath powder, Neutrogena for sunscreen, Cle de Peau for eyeshadow, Paul Mitchell for body lotion ... too many to count!

Playing with products must be fun -- but what are some things you do for fun when you're not at Teen Vogue?
Yoga, pilates and I love to travel ... even though it wreaks havoc on skin!

Do you read any other beauty blogs reguarly? What are some that you like and why?
Sadly, I don't read too many other beauty blogs regularly ... mostly, I'm on style.com and Gawker when I have spare web time ... that is, when I'm not researching new stories!

Be sure to check out Beauty Blogger by clicking here.

Drew Barrymore Channels Old Hollywood Glamour, and I'm Obsesed.

At the premiere of Grey Gardens on April 14, Drew Barrymore looked every ounce the Hollywood starlet. But not just any starlet ... no, she pulled out the big guns and channeled the glamour of Old Hollywood. I'm loving the mesh veil, the creamy pale skin and the deep red lip, not to mention the 1940s-style waves. This is the best she's looked at a premiere in forever -- she just is every ounce the glamour girl.

In fact, here's another picture for your viewing pleasure (and this time you can see her crimson nails, too):

So what do you think? Are you as obsessed as I am with this look, or do you wish Drew would have gone more current? Let me know in the comments!

The interplay of light and dark woods, weathered teak contrasting with patchouli, adds to the intensity, while hypnotic incense vapors and amber crystals lend a sense of intrigue and allure to this sensuous creation.
