A Step Away from Beauty for a Moment ... John Lennon's Imagine

In my line of work, it's pretty easy to forget that sometimes the frivolous stuff is, well, frivolous. Yes, I love buying lipgloss and going to the spa as much as the next girl. But sometimes it's nice to take a moment, step back, and remember that there are bigger things out there. I leave you with the lyrics to John Lennon's Imagine, and the video of the song being performed on Glee last season (love or hate the show, this was a very powerful moment).

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

The 83rd Annual Academy Awards: My Favorite Looks

Another awards season has come and gone, culminating last night in the 83rd Annual Academy Awards. And while the show itself left a little to be desired (Anne Hathaway is apparently a "Woo Girl," James Franco was seemingly high, the show itself was pretty darn boring), there were, of course, some truly amazing looks on the red carpet. Check out my favorites after the jump.

While I didn't really love Reese Witherspoon's dress -- it looked like a knockoff of the Valentino Julia Roberts wore back in 2001 -- I absolutely loved her Barbie-esque high ponytail. While many celebrities went safe with their hair on the red carpet last night, leaving it down in loose ringlets, at least Reese took a chance and did something fun!

Motherhood most certainly agrees with last night's Best Actress winner Natalie Portman. The jewel-toned, flowing Rodarte dress and tasseled Tiffany earrings looked perfect against her skin tone, and her baby bump was perfectly accented.

What's not to love about the Elie Saab dress Mila Kunis wore last night? The intricate cutout lace panels, the flowing train, the pale lavender hue, the lace cup details at the bust ... all added up to one winning look.

I love to see a teenager looking age appropriate on the red carpet, and last night Hailee Steinfeld did just that. She helped design her sparkle-encrusted Marchesa dress -- and, paired with a high bun and slender headband, she looked every inch the sophisticated yet girly ballerina.

To me, Gwyneth Paltrow can do no wrong. She was simply stunning in a futuristic, shimmering Calvin Klein sheath, complete with a jewel-encrusted peacock pin by Louis Vuitton at the hip.

I really love that Cate Blanchett takes chances on the red carpet. Her beaded lavender dress by Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci was cool, exotic and extremely sophisticated with her close-cropped blonde bob.

First Look Fridays: Makeup Artist Collier Strong

Collier Strong, makeup, makeup artist, makeup artist Collier StrongI love everything about Project Runway. So it comes as no surprise that I'm super excited to bring you my interview today with the makeup artist seen on the show season after season, Collier Strong! Collier has also beautified the faces of some of the biggest celebrities in Hollywood, including Kate Beckinsale and Beyonce, and he's also the Consulting Makeup Artist for L’Oreal Paris USA. Read on to discover what he loves most about working on Project Runway, his favorite L'Oreal products and so much more.

I love watching you on Project Runway every season. How did you become involved with the show, and what do you love about working with the designers each season?
I became involved with PR because of L'Oreal sponsorship of the show and since I’ve been a spokesperson for them for 12 years. It was a very exciting way for L'Oreal to not only feature the brand, but me as well.

I love working with the designers each season because of the creative collaboration between us. We’re given a limited amount of time, as they are in each challenge. So you have to be incredibly creative as quickly as humanly possible. It seriously could be an Olympic sport.

How did you become involved with L'Oreal Paris? What have you enjoyed most about working with such an iconic brand?
I became a spokesperson for L'Oreal Paris in 1999. I was working on all their commercials and print campaigns and impressed the then President, Carol J Hamilton. They approached me to work with them. It’s been life changing for me, to say the least, in a creative sense and on a basic professional level. I’ve met and worked with some of the most iconic women in the world and traveled it to do so. I was just in India in December working on the magnificent Aishwarya Rai. How many jobs do you know where you can experience that?!

What are your top 5 favorite L'Oreal products and why?
Voluminous Mascara -- It’s simply the best I’ve ever used, even before I was with L'Oreal.

Studio Secrets Magic Perfecting Base -- It’s an amazing mattifying primer that makes the skin look better even before you apply foundation and concealer. Also, it helps those two products glide on the skin and look more natural.

Le Rouge Long Wear Lip Color -- It’s great on my clients for the red carpet. You have to remember they get their hair and makeup done hours before we ever see them on “carpet.”

True Match Foundation -- It’s got the most comprehensive color range of any foundations found at mass or in department stores. And the formula is fantastic.

Youth Code Skin Care System -- I love how light it is on the skin and no fragrance, and [it] works on every skin type, which is what I need at work since I work with so many different faces.

What are your top 3 makeup tips?
1) Always use a lash curler! It opens the eyes. Try applying a light coat of mascara first.

2) Always carry a powder compact and lipstick! Even if you don’t know how to do your makeup, lipstick and a powdered face will make you look polished and “done.”

3) If you wear foundation, make sure it matches your chest so your face looks like it belongs to the rest of your body.

Being a makeup artist must be fun -- but what do you do in your spare time?
As with most people with careers, it demands so much of my time and I travel so often I spend all my time off with my partner of 11 years and with our fantastic group of friends.

Amazing Lip Concoction from YSL: Golden Gloss in Golden Champagne Layered Over Gloss Volupte in Iced Lychee

YSL, YSL Golden Gloss, YSL Gloss Volupte, YSL Golden Gloss in Golden Champagne, YSL Gloss Volupte in Iced Lychee, YSL lipgloss, YSL lip gloss, YSL lipcolor, YSL lip color, YSL makepu, lip, lips, lipgloss, lip gloss, lipcolor, lip color, makeupDo you ever go shopping in your beauty stash? You know, you've bought a product, loved it, left it in a purse or makeup bag, and promptly forgotten about it ... and then, months later, it reappears? Such was the case this morning when I switched purses and, voila! Rediscovered the amazingness that lies within the duo of YSL's Gloss Volupte in Iced Lychee and Golden Gloss in Golden Champagne.

These two gorgeous glosses perfectly complement one another. In all honesty, the perfect shimmery peach lipcolor may lie in the layering of Golden Champagne over Iced Lychee!

Iced Lychee is a pretty, semi-sheer coral-peach with the unique texture of lipstick meets gloss. It's super shiny and super moisturizing, and even contains antioxidant-rich pomegranate extract for extra nourishment and conditioning properties. Golden Champagne, on the other hand, is a dark brownish peach liberally packed with 24-carat glittery gold flecks. It emits the subtle scent of mango for a juicy pop.

Discovering these two glosses in my bag today -- and layering them over each other -- was the highlight in an otherwise staid and beginning to be dull makeup routine. Who knew shopping in my purse could be so much fun?

YSL Golden Gloss in Golden Champagne retails for $30 at yslbeautyus.com. YSL Gloss Volupte in Iced Lychee retails for $30 at yslbeautyus.com.

Little Luxuries: Tom Ford Tuscan Leather Candle

Tom Ford, Tom Ford Tuscan Leather, Tom Ford Tuscan Leather Candle, Tom Ford candle, Tom Ford fragrance, candle, fragrance, home fragrance"I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany." -- Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy

Okay, all jokes aside, the Tom Ford Tuscan Leather Candle is one of my favorite acquisitions as of late. I love the utter luxuriousness of this candle -- it really does look as though it belongs in an old library filled with leather armchairs and, yes, leather-bound books.

A blend of saffron, raspberry, thyme, olibanum, night-blooming jasmine, leather, black suede and amberwood create a leather-inspired aroma that somehow still seems light and airy. The scent permeates the room without feeling cloying or heavy -- it's definitely not one of those candles whose scent will linger after being blown out, which I appreciate. A burning time of 30 hours ensures many nights of sensuous delight -- perfect for cozying up by the fire (or, okay, the TV) with a cashmere blanket and a battered copy of War and Peace.

The Tom Ford Tuscan Leather Candle retails for $85 at bergdorfgoodman.com.

Direct from the Runway: Betsey Johnson Fall 2011

Betsey Johnson, Betsey Johnson Fall 2011 Fashion Week, Betsey Johnson hair, Betsey Johnson Peter Gray, Peter Gray, hair, hairstylistEvery season, I just know I'll be blown away by the look at Betsey Johnson. And, true to form, Fall 2011 did not disappoint! I always love seeing what amazing creations manicurist Nonie Creme of butter LONDON and hairstylist Peter Gray (working this time with Redken) come up with, and this season was no exception.

Betsey Johnson, Betsey Johnson Fall 2011 Fashion Week, Nonie Creme, butter LONDON, Betsey Johnson nails, Betsey Johnson butter LONDON, nail polishNonie Creme created a cusom mix for Betsey this season, with the working title right now of Wallis (inspired by the Duchess of Windsor). "Betsey's girl is getting really vampy, really high fashion," Nonie told me backstage. "We wanted to do a nail that exuded almost an austerity." Nonie went for a dark nail that wasn't "your traditional kind of tired old burgundy" -- a gorgeous olive greenish gold. "It's like a piece of metal left out in the rain for 10 years," she said. "It's kind of a high fashion nail!"

Hairstylist Peter Gray always comes up with an amazing concept for the hair, and this season he was inspired by Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction. To create the look, he cut black wigs into a sharp, angled bob that dropped down slightly in the front and included a blunt fringe across the brow. "I've done so much hairdressing in all the shows that I sort of lost my roots," he told me. "I started at Sassoon, so I thought it would be nice to come back to it." But of course, the look didn't stop there. Peter then laid a piece of lace over the top and sprayed the bob in gold -- totally gorgeous, totally exotic, totally Betsey! "It's always bonkers, it's always about as unpredictable as you can get," Peter said. "There's loads of freedom!"

Coolest Product Ever: H20+ Aquafirm Weekly Active Foam Mask

H20+, H20+ Aquafirm Weekly Active Foam Mask, H20+ skincare, H20+ skin care, H20+ mask, mask, skin, skincare, skin careOnce in awhile, I come across a product so cool, it would just be a tragedy not to use it. Such is the case with the brand-new H20+ Aquafirm Weekly Active Foam Mask.

This mask has a gel-like consistency that, upon rubbing into the skin, turns into an amazing white foam right before your eyes! Within about 15 seconds of sitting upon the skin, the gel begins to foam and froth, leaving in its wake a concoction of white bubbles that tingle delightfully.

And as if that's not cool enough, the product actually works. One use and you'll already see softer, smoother skin left in its wake, thanks to marine microspheres (to plump the skin), sea nutrient barrier (a fusion of algae and oat extract for a micro-lifting effect) and brown sea kelp (rich in amino acids that support skin elasticity and collagen levels).

I recommend using once a week. You only need to leave the mask on the skin for about 5 minutes for it to work, which means you can even do it in the morning while you're getting dressed or doing your hair for work!

The H20+ Aquafirm Weekly Active Foam Mask retails for $32 at h20plus.com.

Well, she's gone ahead and chopped her locks back to that length, which in my opinion is the most flattering cut for her. (Yes, her hair always looks fantastic, but I just love this length on her!) Ouch! I Burned Myself with My Flat Iron.

flat iron, T3, T3 flat iron, T3 ManeTamer Unruly Hair StraightenerI'm assuming most of us have been there. We're going along, minding our own business, running our flat iron down our tresses ... and then BAM. All of a sudden we burn ourselves. Maybe it's a quick hit against our forehead, maybe it's a quick clip of the ear. But all of a sudden, pain ensues and a red welt appears. (And, in my case a couple years ago, a millisecond-long clamp of my flat iron over my hand resulted in a 2nd-degree burn and an unsightly long scar.)

Why am I telling you this? Oh, no reason ... just because I (ouch!) burned my ear this morning with the flat iron. I was in a rush, not paying attention, and clip! I'm hoping it won't be too terrible, but any healing remedies would be much appreciated! Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

First Look Fridays: Makeup Artist Lauren Gott

What do Anna Kendrick, Heidi Klum and Rooney Mara have in common? They've all been made up by makeup artist Lauren Gott. The former model gets up close and personal here -- discover her tip to beautiful dewy skin, how she first got into the makeup business and so much more after the jump.

Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
I grew up in Louisiana. My home town is Lake Charles which is in the heel of the boot of Louisiana and right off the Gulf of Mexico. Upon completion of high school I was asked to go to NYC to model with Wilhelmina Models; my older sister was a model and I believe she had inadvertently shown her booker a graduation photo of me. I thought the notion a joke due to my underwhelming height and childlike ballerina frame. I knew I would never be offered an experience quite like modeling again, so I bit the bullet and decided to spend what I thought would be a summer in NY. My academic aspirations to study medicine were soon put on the back burner when I made the tough decision to accept agency offers in Europe. I thought, school will always be there, but this is a once in a lifetime opportunity I can only do when I'm young. It's baffling how one decision can alter your entire life and career course.

How did you first become interested in beauty, and what led you to become a makeup artist?
Here's where the story gets amusing. As one could only imagine, my very Type A brain grew discontent with simply sitting in a chair for hours in hair and makeup or taking orders on photo sets. I wanted to be part of the creative process and be heard. I'll never forget while on a job in Italy I decided to offer my 2 cents of advice to a photographer. He barked, "You're a model, we don't care what you think!" Well that was the sad extreme, but as a result, I would instead thrive on working with those who did care what I thought and that paid off.

I was fortunate to do a lot of beauty work which meant makeup and hair was more whimsical, fantasy-oriented and most creative. Sitting in the makeup/hair chair is where I would observe and ask infinite questions. After 6 years of working with some of the best makeup artists in the biz from Pat McGrath and Tom Pecheux to fellow Louisiana native Kevyn Aucoin, I was well into building my own makeup kit and experimenting on my own hair and makeup with self portraits. I was living in Paris at the time and beauty photographers soon took notice of my self-portrait Polaroids. I was asked to do my own hair and makeup for my first published beauty work. I thought that was the ultimate in creative control; I became a one-stop shop for makeup, hair, and modeling. My Polaroid technique carried on well into when I stopped modeling and wanted to interest photographers in my beauty story ideas.

You have quite an impressive celebrity clientele! What are some of the favorite looks you've created?
I've been fortunate to work with some very interesting people. Now, that is the single most, difficult question you've asked! I love doing looks with what appears to be the cleanest, velvety skin to the most colorful and elaborate makeup. That is the beauty of my job. I work with different people most every day and churning out work across a spectrum of what you could possibly fathom.

What are your top 5 makeup essentials?
1) Moisturizer -- crucial!

2) Concealer -- under the eyes, the sides of the nose, and any blemishes or broken blood vessels)

3) Lip balm -- with a natural cocoa, shea butter or beeswax. Petroleum-based lip balm defeats the purpose and dries you out in the end.

4) Eyelash curler -- even if no mascara is applied, this wakes up the eye immediately.

5) Cream color blush -- on the apple of the cheeks for a youthful flush and dabbed on the lips.

That's all you really ever need to look super clean and polished.

What are your top 3 beauty tips?
1) Tone up your glistening skills. Get your glow on by applying iridescent sheer color cream (pearly moon white for lighter skin tones and golden color for darker skin tones) on the top of cheekbones, just under brows, the bridge of nose, and bow of the lip.

2) How now fine brow. The brow can really set the whole look of the face. Fill in brow with a wedged brow brush. Dip in a little water and a shadow color lighter or similar to brow. Brush on in light sweeps to mimic hair. Follow with a clear brow gel or mascara the shade of brow to keep them in place. The mascara will make them appear even fuller while the brow gel renders a feathered look.

3) Dew not grease is the word. The richer and thicker the better when it comes to moisturizer. Makeup glides on easily and makes skin look youthful and hydrated. Just use tissue, blotters or a little powder on the T-zone. The desired effect is dewy, not oily. If you have oily skin, a lighter cream will do although the delicate eye area always seems to do best with rich cream. I prefer not to use it on the lid if I plan to use powder eye shadow. If I do put cream on the lid, I apply powder on top to create a dry surface so that eye shadow pigment will blend and not look splotchy.

Being a makeup artist must be fun -- but what do you do in your spare time?
I'm very active. I love running, kickboxing, dancing, cycling, water-skiing and anything with extreme cardio. Cooking, baking and maintaining a beautiful home are also things I truly enjoy and find relaxing. Last night's dinner was turkey shepherd's pie and peach cobbler.

Witchy, Moody Makeup by Daniel Martin for Lancome at Chris Benz Fall 2011

Backstage in the craziness that was the Chris Benz Fall 2011 Presentation, makeup artist Daniel Martin told me that Chris had been inspired by "weird voodoo witchcraft mysticism down in the South." Intrigued?

"Chris has been going to SCAD down in Savannah and teaching a fashion class," Martin told me. "The inspiration was this witchy, moody kind of a girl." The makeup muse for this collection was PJ Harvey -- "She had this really haunting voice, this crazy blue eyeshadow," Martin said.

Martin went for a "messed up" look with the makeup to contrast the refined nature of the collection, using two new 5-pan palettes from Lancome -- blonde and black models had blue makeup, while brunettes got aubergine. Martin melded four of the colors from the palette "in a way that someone could do it with their fingers," he told me. "We didn't want it to look too pretty." He also smudged the mascara ("If it's clumpy, it's better," he said), sculpted the cheeks, and finished lips with a sheer tone. "Everything is a little off -- it's nothing too done," he finished by saying.

The gorgeous makeup paired with deconstructed waves by John Ruidant for Redken and either red or black nails by Anna-Maria for Lancome. I'm inclined to say I will be definitely be trying this look going forward!

The Lap of Luxury: Mitchell and Peach Luxury Hand Cream

hand cream, lotion, hand lotion, Mitchell and Peach, Mitchell and Peach Luxury Hand Cream, Beauty Habit, beautyhabit.com, BeautyhabitWhen the winter months really get into full force, there's only one way to combat the chapping and redness the deep chill leaves behind. Hand cream. But not just any hand cream ... Mitchell and Peach Luxury Hand Cream.

This delightful cream is presented in divinely luxe packaging. I love the white tube with black top and slender black writing -- it exudes such an air of rich panache.

And the cream itself? Not only does it sink into skin immediately, leaving behind no greasy residue, but it makes skin feel so soft and smooth. A combination of Vitamin E, shea butter and English honey ensure that skin's suppleness is restored immediately. It's scented with ylang ylang, Palmarosa, roses, pure English lavender, sweet vanilla and violet -- a tranquil yet tantalizing scent that is somehow delicate, not overpowering.

Direct from the Runway: Behnaz Sarafpour Fall 2011

"We want her to be a little bit coquette, a little bit playful," M.A.C Vice President of Makeup Artistry Gordon Espinet told me backstage at Behnaz Sarafpour Fall 2011. Behnaz gave Espinet a Kate Moss photograph as reference, and then he interpreted it as Brigitte Bardot in the film When God Created Woman. Along with Laurent Philippon of Bumble and bumble and Wanda Ruiz of CND, the look was beautiful, radiant and youthful.

"The word of the day is, if you don't need it, don't use it!" Espinet told me. He used very little concealer and foundation, and focused on applying Care Blends Oils "to make the skin look deliciously gorgeous." He used three colors on the eyes -- light on the inner corners, medium on the outer half and dark as eyeliner. He also used a cream color on the browbone for extra shine. "Everything has this real radiance and healthiness about it," he said. Eyes were dramatized with Penultimate Eyeliner from the Wonder Woman Collection, applied very thin and winged up at the outer corner. "I don't want it to look like Audrey Hepburn, I don't want it to look like Sophia, I don't want it to look long," he said. "If it gets too long, it gets too haute couture." Opulash in Uber Black was applied to both the top and bottom lashes. Lips were filled in with a lip pencil and then gone over with Tanarama Lipstick for a champagne-ish shine. "Ultimately the girls are so pretty, we're keeping them looking like themselves," Espinet said of the finished look.

Bumble and Bumble's Laurent Philippon wanted hair to look spontaneous, like it hadn't taken more than 2 minutes to create. "She's a modern, nowadays girl who has a really good sense of style and does her hair very fast, and she's really good!" He prepped the texture with a mix of Surf Spray (to mattify the hair) and Prep (for a healthy look). After drawing a short part in the front, he directed roots backward for "a slight 60's vibe," he said, and then tied it into a loose ponytail before twisting and pinning. "It's spontaneous, yet very stylish," he said.

And the piece de resistance? Most definitely the nails by CND's Wanda Ruiz! The tips for this show were called the Manolo Manicure, inspired by two styles of namesake custom-designed shoes by Manolo Blahnik for the show. One set was made with Blackjack and clear French tips (using Airdry Top Coat); the other was created with Putty at the base and Blackjack lines.

Fresh, Energetic Ballerinas by M.A.C Senior Makeup Artist Romero Jennings for Carmen Marc Valvo Fall 2011

"Effortless impact!" M.A.C Senior Makeup Artist Romero Jennings told me backstage of his look for Carmen Marc Valvo Fall 2011. "Carmen wanted these girls to look like fresh, young, energetic ballerinas." But at the same time, the look was very wearable and approachable. "Every woman will feel like they can actually wear these clothes, you can wear this hairstyle and you can actually do the makeup yourself!"

Jennings wanted to start with clean, healthy skin. He prepped the skin with Studio Moisture Fix before applying Face & Body Foundation with the 168 Brush. He also used Studio Finish Concealer and Mineralize Skinfinish Natural/Light as a set powder.

To highlight the cheekbones, Jennings used Cream Color Base in Pearl, and then dabbed Blush Cream in Posey onto the cheeks with his fingers. "It just screams ballerina," he told me. "It’s very fresh, it’s very youthful, it’s great on all skin tones."

Using the 224 Brush, Jennings applied a new cream eyeshadow coming for fall, Chestnut, from the lashline and blended upward. He purposely left the rosy tone on the models' eyelids "to make the shadow look more individual," he said. "It's more custom-made when you use your own natural shade with it." Lashes were curled 2-3 times and then Jennings used both wands from Haute & Naughty Mascara on the top lashes only -- "one to really pile it on and one to really separate!"

On the lips, Jennings dabbed the same Blush Cream in Posey from the cheeks and then added a touch of Cremesheen Glass in Pure Magnificence, a beautiful pearl lavender shade coming for fall.

Direct from the Runway: Rachel Roy Fall 2011 with Ted Gibson

At the Rachel Roy Fall 2011 Presentation this morning, hairstylist Ted Gibson created a beautiful bohemian-inspired look that storybook leading lady Heidi would just love. "It’s so simple and the clothes are so chic," he told me as he worked on a model backstage.

Ted pulled hair up with a severe center part before placing a braided extension woven with fabric from Rachel's collection across the top of the models' hair "to create some texture," he said. To keep hair in place, he sprayed it with L'Oreal Texture Infinium Hairspray #3.

Ted also spoke about his involvement with non-profit organization Beauty Changes Lives, for which he picked four beauty school students to shadow him throughout Fashion Week. "I had close to 100 essays that I had to read, and I ended up picking four -- I was only supposed to pick one!" he admitted to me. "The four were just incredible. It really inspired me and helped me to remember where I came from."

Direct from the Runway: Pretty Ballerina Hair by the Ted Gibson Team at Carmen Marc Valvo

Carmen Marc Valvo, Ted Gibson, Devin Toth, hair, hairstylist, fashion, fashion show, New York Fashion Week, Fashion Week, backstageIf there's one show I make sure to get to every season, it's Carmen Marc Valvo. I love the makeup Romero Jennings for M.A.C does each season (more on that coming soon!), and of course I always love everything Ted Gibson does. Well, this season he was glamming up Janelle Monae for this little awards show you may have watched -- ahem, the GRAMMYS -- so he left his very capable Devin Toth in charge! (Devin has actually cut my tresses to perfection before, so I knew this would be good.)

"This look is for the girl who feels pretty," Toth told me while he worked on a model backstage. "Like that girl who puts a mini clip in the back of her head and she has that natural beauty." The inspiration from Carmen was of the ballerina, but Toth and team made it a softer look -- "not tight, not too lavish," he told me.

Toth began by prepping the hair with Hair Sheet Styling, which he said makes the flyaways disappear without making hair greasy. He then sprayed Build It Blow Drying Agent throughout the hair and blowdried with a round brush for volume in the back. After the blowout, Toth finger combed hair to the back, twisted it and secured it with bobby pins directly at the occipital bone.

Toth said of the finished look, "It's pretty, but not too elegant." Well, I can definitely get on board with that.

Mani of the Week: CND Shellac (Finally!)

I've been dying to try CND Shellac for quite some time now. I've tried other gel manicures, like Dashing Diva Gelife and Sakura Calgel, but as I'm a huge fan of everything CND, this was definitely at the top of my list!

So last night, while enjoying some cocktails and chitchat with my fellow bloggers at Cocktails and Couture, I decided to try it out. My fab CND nail technician, Heather Reynosa Davis, took my nails in a totally fab direction with a unique layered look. We did one coat of Rock Royalty and one coat of Iced Coral ... and then Heather did something totally awesome by giving me one nail inspired by the Fall 2011 Ruffian Tuxedo Nail!

I am totally in love with this manicure, and I can't wait to see how perfect and glossy it still looks in two weeks when it's finally time to remove it. I. AM. IN. LOVE!

What's on your nails this week? Let me know in the comments!

Thanks to the fab Keri Blair for taking the photos!

Direct from the Runway: Rachel Antonoff Fall 2011 with M.A.C Senior Makeup Artist Keri Blair

Not many things make me want to go back to high school ... but M.A.C Senior Makeup Artist Keri Blair's look for the Rachel Antonoff Fall 2011 collection just might! The concept centered around the dance from The Virgin Suicides (coincidentally one of my favorite books and movies), with what Keri described as "pretty young-looking makeup."

"When I think about makeup in high school, it's all about black liner inside the eye," Keri told me backstage as she worked on the face chart. She began with a filled in, boxier eyebrow, saying, "Eyebrows are a major time capsule. The fuller they are, the more unkempt, the younger the feeling of the makeup." She accomplished this by using a paler shadow like M.A.C Omega or M.A.C Coquette, brushing it through with an angled brush "to give a little more depth to the eyebrow." Once the models were in place for the presentation, Keri brushed the brows up a bit.

Keri used Smolder Eye Kohl on the waterline and curled lashes (but used no mascara!). She used a Creme Blend Blush on the cheeks and Strobe Cream on the high planes of the cheekbone "to add a little youthful glow," she said.

Models fell into two camps when it came time for lips. Most of the girls, like the one seen in the pictures here, were given a fresh, girly look with a blend of M.A.C Sheen Supreme Lipsticks in Full Stop and Impressive, mixed together and patted onto the lips with soft edges. But five "bad girls," as Keri described them, were seen with a stained mouth thanks to Currant and Red Lip Pencils. "They look like they've been making out with their boyfriend behind the bleachers -- they're the badasses of the school," Keri said.
