Salon and Spa Directory: SaunaBar

I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty obsessed with Gwyneth Paltrow and goop. I get the weekly emails, I have the app, I peruse all the listings for LA of the places I need to eat, drink, spa, the list goes on. And on a recent readthrough of their LA listings, I discovered SaunaBar.

SaunaBar is a holistic experience that focuses on weight loss, anti aging, relaxation and detoxification. They do this through a variety of treatments, including infrared sauna detox and lymphatic compression massage. I was immediately intrigued by these treatments, and had the opportunity to come in to experience them both.

I arrived at the location in Brentwood on a rainy Saturday morning, beyond ready for some detoxing of my mind, body and soul. (Let’s just say I’d been eating a LOT of carbs recently, so my body needed a little extra love.) I was booked for both the lymphatic massage and the infrared sauna, and I really wasn’t sure what to expect with either. I’ve experienced both in the past, but I could tell from all my reading about SaunaBar that the experience here would be very unique!

I started with Lymphatic Massage. Lymphatic drainage is crucial for good health and a strong immune system, and it helps to reduce the appearance of cellulite, balance hormones and improve circulation. This was a treatment like none other. You’re not actually massaged by a person, but by a machine. You wear a t-shirt and shorts, and slide your legs into a compression suit with two large boot-like sleeves that go up over your thighs. You’re also given a wrap that goes around your torso. Then you choose the pressure you want (I went for medium) and your therapist turns on a small machine that sends air pressure up your body and massages your lymph nodes.

Let me tell you something. IT FELT LIKE A PERSON WAS MASSAGING ME. It actually felt like TWO people were massaging me! The sensation is much like you would experience in a massage chair at a nail salon, where it’s kneading your body up and down in different types of relaxed strokes -- so it’s not painful at all, but actually very pleasant, even if the pressure is higher. And I really can’t stress enough how much it felt like I was being massaged by an actual human being! It was an incredible feeling like none I’ve experienced before.

After this unique treatment, it was time for my Infrared Sauna Treatment. This was also very unique for me, as I had to change into different shorts and a T-shirt than before and then climb into a personalized Sauna Pod (I’d been in my own infrared sauna before, but never in a pod.) I thought I might feel claustrophobic or be stuck in there feeling like I was getting too hot, but this didn’t happen at all.

The infrared sauna pod. It's pretty big!

The pod is actually pretty big, especially for someone with a 4’11” frame, and has a lot of room around your body, so I never felt claustrophobic at all. It heats up to 122 degrees, which sounds INSANELY hot, but honestly I really didn’t even sweat that much and felt very calm the whole time. The pod is also designed for your head to stick out of the side, and if you do get too hot, you can lift the top of the pod up for periods of time (I did that a couple times, just for about 10 seconds each time, but really didn’t feel that hot). Each pod is lined with 440 jade stones, which are known for their healing properties, and uses infrared red light technology to assist in the recovery and repair of your body’s cells.

I honestly can’t say enough good things about my session at SaunaBar. I felt so relaxed afterward, and my fears about doing something so different were definitely put at ease immediately upon arriving and seeing what the lymphatic drainage and sauna pod machines were actually like. I definitely recommend this for anyone curious about lymphatic drainage or infrared sauna treatments!

The Lymphatic Massage is 30 minutes. The Infrared Sauna Treatment is 40 minutes. Each session is $70, or there are packs and memberships available. For more information and to book an appointment, visit saunabar.com.
