Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
I am from Canada, a small town close to Toronto named St. Thomas. I studied theater, special effects and beauty makeup at Complections School of Makeup in Toronto. After living and working in Toronto for a few years I moved to Los Angeles and have been here ever since.
How did you first become interested in beauty, and what led you to become a makeup artist?
I have always had an interest in the beauty industry, especially makeup. I started out borrowing my mother's makeup, then I would sneak into my sister's room and borrow her makeup. I would try everything out on myself and then quickly wash off all the evidence before supper. I have always loved to test out different products. Even just to look at them and clean them and organize them in my little Caboodles makeup case. Eventually, my interest and opportunities to see other artists work led me to take the plunge and attend makeup school.
You have quite an impressive celebrity clientele! What are some of the favorite looks you've created?
I love to do a beautiful lip on clients with something vibrant and fun. A lot of makeup artists say their favorite feature to focus on is eyes but mine is definitely lips.
I love all of the looks you've created for your sister, Rachel. Do you have a favorite among what you've worked on with her? How did you create that specific look?
I think my favorite look I have created on Rachel would have to be the Sherlock Holmes premiere in Berlin. It was a rich reddish purple lip with black liner, glowy skin and a strong brow. The entire look came together so perfectly: hair, dress, jewels, makeup. I was very proud to be there with her that night.
What are your top 5 makeup essentials?
CoverGirl LashBlast Fusion Mascara
Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat Radiant Touch
SUQQU Clear Veil Powder
Chanel Ombre D'Eau Fluid Iridescent Eyeshadow
Stila Convertible Color
What are your top 3 beauty tips?
1) I like to apply brow gel (my favorite is Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Gel) BEFORE I apply pencil or powder. I apply it, let it dry and then fill in the brows where needed. I like that they are set in place and I find the powder stays better when you apply the gel first.
2) When applying lipgloss, I like to keep it very sheer and concentrated on the center of the mouth. To make your lips look a little more full, apply the gloss along your cupid's bow, just outside of the edge of your lip to give that illusion.
3) When doing a cat eye, make an imaginary line from the outer edge of your eyebrow the outer edge of your eye. The liner should follow the angle of that line.
What is the most rewarding part of what you do?
A friend once told me I was very lucky to be a makeup artist because I get to make people feel like an even more beautiful version of themselves. I appreciate that I am paid to do that. I am very lucky to have that in a career I love.
Being a makeup artist must be fun -- but what do you do in your spare time?
I am currently taking a holistic nutrition course so that takes up a lot of my spare time. I also play intramural kickball, hike, and read.
