Salon and Spa Directory: The John Barrett Braid Bar

I've always wished I was good at braiding hair. When I was younger, I tried valiantly to braid my Barbies' tresses, but I always failed -- I just couldn't get the hang of French braiding. I tried on myself, too, but always with disastrous effects. Enter the John Barrett Braid Bar, located on the 9th floor of the uber-posh Bergdorf Goodman.

With the introduction of this fabulous service at the John Barrett Salon into my life, I now feel okay with the fact that I never mastered the art of the braid. Here, talented stylists weave, twist and knead every strand into any sort of braided style you can imagine. The side braid? They can do it. Milkmaid braids? No problem. A braided crown? Why didn't you say so?

I have to admit I was overwhelmed by the choices presented -- a huge booklet of options sits at every braid bar station, alongside tackle boxes filled with every size bobby pin and hair pin you can possibly imagine. My stylist, Sue, helped me decide on a style that was part updo, part milkmaid braid, with just a touch of disheveledness thrown in for good measure.

I watched as her hands deftly wove strands around each other, creating multiple side and back braids that she then twisted into an intricate knot at the back. She teased the crown so that it wouldn't look too perfect, and then finished with loads of hairspray.

The end result? SO AWESOME. I couldn't stop staring at my hair from every direction -- I've never had such a fun, intricate updo before and I simply can't wait to go back and experience it all over again! And, since there are so many different braided options to choose from, I'll never have to have the same look twice.

Pricing at the John Barrett Braid Bar ranges from $45-$125. For more information and to book an appointment, visit johnbarrett.com.
