Throwback Thursday: The Thrill of Getting a Cabbage Patch Kid

If you were a child of the 80s, you wanted one thing and one thing alone. A Cabbage Patch Kid. Since there was no such thing as the internet back then, toy stores were absolute madness, especially around Christmastime. Well, my grandma braved the elements and went out to buy me a Cabbage Patch Kid of my very own.

This is me holding said Cabbage Patch Kid. I want to say I was maybe 6 here? I can't say why I'm wearing a construction paper crown with my name on it, except that it must have been for a birthday celebration.

You may remember that Cabbage Patch Kids came with birth certificates. Well, I didn't like the name of mine -- I think it was Elizabeth something -- so I changed her name to Rachel. (Rachel was my favorite name at the time, and I had at least 5 or 6 dolls with the same moniker.) I did, however, love her red braids and her pacifier. This doll was my prized possession for quite some time.

I really was so excited to have a Cabbage Patch Kid, which I'm sure you can tell from my huge, beaming grin. This was a momentous occasion!

Did you have a Cabbage Patch Kid -- or another toy or doll that meant a lot to you? Tell me about it in the comments!

  1. My sister and I always wanted Cabbage Patch dolls, but the stores in my area never seemed to have enough. So my Grandmother made us dolls that looked exactly like them. I think I loved that doll much more :)

  2. I totally remember the thrill of getting one. My Mom made me one when I was a few months and that kept me from wanting one because it looked and felt like the real thing - she did an excellent job on it. Cabbage patch dolls seemed to define a girl of the '80s' childhood. 😊

  9. Yay for Cabbage Patch Kids... I wanted one so bad as a kid and got a hand me down. We were poor, but I loved my hand me down nonetheless.
