Flashback Friday: Recreating The 1980s and 1990s-Inspired Segmented Ponytail with Invisibobble Traceless Hair Rings

Invisibobble, Invisibobble Traceless Hair Rings, ponytail, ponytail holders, segmented ponytail, Flashback Friday, hair trends, 1980s, 1990s, vintage beauty
I don't know about you, but I rocked the segmented ponytail all throughout the 1980s and 1990s. This was a fun, easy hairstyle that even I -- who, despite my many years as a beauty blogger, still can't do much more than flat iron or use an idiot-proof curling wand -- was able to master at a very early age.

Seriously, I've never even been able to do a French braid or a fishtail braid. Every time I try, I just end up getting frustrated and discouraged. So being able to master any hairstyle, no matter how simple, has always made me feel like singing from the rooftops.

So I'm not sure why I always loved this style so much, but maybe it was because it really was EASY. Seriously, all you had to do to make this style work was gather it into multiple smaller ponytails, twist a ponytail holder around each one, and voila! Your work was done. Or maybe it was because with a few simple twists, it looked like I had created a much more challenging and interesting hairstyle than I actually felt like I had.

Which brings me to last night, when a college friend and I were hanging out and going through all my bags of beauty products (suffice it to say I will have MANY product reviews for you in the coming weeks), and we came across my little plastic cubes of Invisibobble Traceless Hair Rings.

Each cube contains three small rings that look like the phone cords of the 1980s and 1990s ... which is what inspired the look you see above! As soon as we pulled them out of the boxes, we couldn't help but think of this hairstyle. I chose three Invisibobbles in different colors, pulled my tresses back into three separate sections, and BAM! The segmented ponytail was complete! We immediately took a photo for my Snapchat (are you following me yet? You can do so here).

Side note: I can't believe my hair actually is that long. I have so many layers in the front that I never really realize how long it's gotten -- but I was pretty surprised when I saw that tail in the back! (Also: I think it's time for a haircut.)

These ponytail holders are incredibly easy to use and they don't tug at your strands AT ALL. Way better than when we used to wrap our hair with actual rubber bands in the 80s (ouch). They come in TONS of colors so you can find one to suit your style no matter what shade of the rainbow you may like. Plus they're adorable and they snap right back into their miniature round shape once you remove them from your locks.

I have to admit that now I just want to rock a segmented ponytail every day. It's easy, it's fun, it stands out in a crowd ... and with Invisibobble by my side, it's cuter than ever!

The Invisibobble Traceless Hair Rings are $8 for a pack of three at sephora.com.

  5. I wondered what the Invisibobble looked like once in. My hair probably isn't thick enough for them but they still look like something I want to try.
