Throwback Thursday: My Junior High Earring Collection

earrings, Throwback Thursday, #TBT, earring tree, 1990s, junior high, style, fashion, jewelry
If you had to choose only one accessory for the rest of your life, what would it be? I can answer definitively that my accessory would be earrings, earrings and more earrings. I've been obsessed with earrings since before I even had pierced ears and used to use those fun stick-on earrings in the 80s -- and, as soon as I got my ears pierced for my 10th birthday, my whole world opened up. All of a sudden, the earrings universe was my oyster! And, as you might imagine from the photo above, I went a little crazy with the choices. Delve into my junior high collection with me, won't you?

First of all, you might be wondering whether this photo was taken back when I was a tween or if it's more recent. The answer is the latter -- I kept this earring tree intact over the years and took this pic when I was visiting my mom recently. (Which might account for the dust on the bottom of the tree. Oops.) But yes, I kept these earrings all this time -- and my mom was kind enough to leave them as is!

When I was in 7th and 8th grade, I prided myself on wearing a different pair of earrings every day. I actually once kept a log of which pair I wore every day for an entire month and made sure not to overlap. (The same cannot be said of my earring wardrobe these days, since I've basically worn the same awesome pair of Bing Bang earrings every day for the last three years.) This tree represents only a fraction of the pairs I wore in junior high, but at the same time, it's definitely representative of my style at the time.

Some of my favorite pairs on this tree (which were in heavier rotation than others) were...

TOP ROW
Birthday cake earrings: I seriously wore these on my birthday every year from 7th grade through high school. It was the only day I broke them out each year and I looked forward to it all year long.

Pink and blue curved wave earrings: I don't remember where these came from, but I wore them ALL. THE. TIME. Sometimes I interchanged them and wore one pink and one blue. I just felt SO cool whenever these hung from my ears.

MIDDLE ROW
Square emerald studs with diamond triangles: These were a gift from one of my best friends at the time. He gave them to me for my Bat Mitzvah. Every time I wore them, I just felt so elegant and sophisticated.

Hanging pianos: Since I play piano, of course I loved these! I usually wore them when I had a piano recital. So meta, I know.

Clear dangling hearts with heart stud posts: Hearts on hearts! What could be better?

BOTTOM ROW
Wrapping paper bows: Come on. Shimmery wrapping paper bows? How could I NOT be in love with these? I tended to break them out around the holidays.

Colorful trolls: This was in the height of troll mania. And while I had a ton of troll dolls, of course I loved these earrings the best! My one complaint was that their hair tended to get stuck in MY hair, so then I was constantly pulling them away from my tresses. But it was a small price to pay for a pair of earrings that was so cute!

And, just to let you know, I was IN LOVE with this tree. I was constantly rearranging my earrings on it and making new combinations. I loved seeing all of my earrings displayed and hanging together. It was one of my first forays into organizing all of my fashion possessions in a way that made me excited to get dressed in the morning!

Did you have any favorite earrings growing up? What were they? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Could those troll earrings be more in style than they are now? How adorable! I didn't have pierced ears in junior high, but I have my 80s earring collection

  2. You crack me up. I love that you still have all of these and remember them so fondly. I didn't have pierced ears until I was an adult so I didn't have those fun ones.

  3. I had a few pairs of those troll earrings and made a few of them as well. My mom found my troll collection about 10 years ago and we donated it, over 200 of them in that collection in sizes from really big to small and tiny. I had no idea they would come back again and wish I had kept them.
