First Look Fridays: Carly Herbst of Lacquered Lover

If you're a fan of nail polish blogs, chances are you've stumbled upon Lacquered Lover. The brains behind the fabulousness is Carly Herbst. I love seeing Carly's photos of different nail polishes, especially since her descriptions of them are extremely well written and completely spot on. I also love her ever-updating list of her nail polish stash -- it's seriously enviable! Read on to find out what inspired her to start her blog, the nail product she can't live without and so much more.

Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
I originally grew up in Rockland County, which is a suburban area outside of NYC. After getting my degree in Political Science and Journalism from the State University of New York at Purchase, I moved to NYC! I've been living and working there since 2008. I live in the city with my boyfriend of 3 years.

How did you first become interested in nails, and what led you to start your blog?
Ever since I was a little kid, I remember my mom taking me with her when she would get manicures. I always bit my nails as a kid so I would try to paint them to get me to stop. Finally I kicked the habit when I was about 20 and loved getting manicures and eventually started collecting nail polishes so I could touch them up between manicures.

Fast forward to 2011. I wanted to be in a more creative field but couldn't break into one and decided I needed to get back into the habit of writing every day. I read a few of the big nail blogs and thought that I could do that too! One day I just decided to start writing and the rest is history!

I love the name of your blog! How did you come up with it?
You know, it wasn't easy! I wanted something clever and fun but didn't want to use my name or location in it. I also wanted it to be easily recognizable as being about nail polish and Lacquered Lover just popped into my head after perusing a thesaurus! As soon as I came up with it I knew it was perfect for me.

What are your top 5 favorite beauty products?
That's a tough one for me! Along with my love of nail polish is a love of makeup. My top 5 current favorite products are:
Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar NSFW, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics lipgloss, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics lipstick, makeup
1) Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in NSFW

NARS, NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Alaska, tinted moisturizer, face cream, lotion, skin, skincare, skin care, makeup
2) NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 in Alaska

Kat Von D, Kat Von D Tattoo Liner Trooper, Kat Von D eyeliner, makeup
3) Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper

4) Salvatore Ferragamo Incanto Shine: My favorite perfume

5) Nail polish remover so I can change my manicure every day!

How about your favorite nail polishes or brands? What makes them stand out for you?
You know, people ask me that all the time and I never know how to answer! I love so many brands that are out there now that are doing unique and different things. My collection of nail polish is, as you can guess, rather large, so I get to try out so many different types and finishes of polishes.

Different brands are great for different things. OPI makes fabulous red polishes and Chanel has a fantastic formula, while Deborah Lippmann is inventive with glitter and Illamasqua pushes the boundaries of names and finishes.

Being a blogger must be fun, but what do you do in your spare time?
Between working a full time job and trying to blog as often as possible, I don't have as much free time as you think! To truly blog to the standard I want to, it takes a lot of time to photograph and edit the photographs. But, I do love getting to spend time with my family, friends and boyfriend. I've always been a huge fan of going to concerts and my all time favorite weekend event is having brunch!
