Throwback Thursday: Rocking the Scrunchie

"No self-respecting New York City woman would be caught dead running around Manhattan in a SCRUNCHIE." - Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City

I came of age in the 80s and 90s. And that meant one thing ... interesting fashion and beauty choices. From disturbingly colorful jumpsuits and crested bangs to stirrup leggings and seemingly hundreds of pairs of overalls, I tried it all. And one of the most momentous trends I incorporated into my daily life? Scrunchies.

That photo you see above was taken in the early 90s, after one of my brother's band concerts. Please note the ridiculously colorful colorblocked winter coat and the purposely mismatched plaid scrunchie. Please also note the precariously high position at which the scrunchie is placed upon my head -- for some reason, I LOVED wearing crazy high ponytails and buns in 8th grade and would spend a good 30 minutes flipping my hair upside down, combing the ponytails as high as they could go and making them perfect.

The photo above is really only one of MANY I have displaying my love of the scrunchie. It's also a perfect example of why I finally grew out my bangs (see last week's Throwback Thursday post for more on that subject).

Lest you think I purged my scrunchies after they went out of style, I bring you this photo -- taken just a few years ago at a friend's 80s-themed birthday party...

Having a little too much fun going through my closet for a friend's 80s-themed birthday party.

I'd like to point out that all of these pieces came from my own closet -- no vintage stores or trolling eBay required here! That stonewashed jean jacket was my prized possession in the late 80s, the T-shirt was made at this awesome store called Expressions (where you spun out puffy paint designs on this big wheel) and the blue and white striped scrunchie was my all-time favorite from back in the day. And while I don't actually wear any of these pieces these days, I'm actually pretty glad I kept them all.

Did you rock scrunchies back in the day? And are you glad you did? Let me know about your scrunchie tales in the comments!

  8. Ooooh yes, even though I am a nineties girl I did rock scrunchies. They were perfect to wrap around a bun!

  9. I totally said that first line in Carrie's voice, complete with the squeak at the end "scrunchie". LOL! I still use scrunchies to be honest, but only at home. It's nice having a soft scrunchie after wearing a strong elastic all day.
