Throwback Thursday: Playing Kim MacAfee in Bye Bye Birdie (And Loving My Costumes)

In 1998, the spring musical at my high school was Bye Bye Birdie. And, while I originally wanted to play Rosie, I was cast as Kim MacAfee -- the young ingenue who gets chosen for one last kiss by Conrad Birdie before he goes off to war. This ended up being one of my favorite parts of all time!

Why did this end up being one of my favorite parts -- and favorite shows, you may ask? Well, it's simple. Kim MacAfee gets such good songs (like "How Lovely to Be a Woman" -- complete with changing my clothes on stage -- and "One Boy"), and the part was made famous in the movie by the ever fabulous, who wouldn't want to be her, super sexy Ann-Margret. But another reason? THE CLOTHES.

I seriously LOVED my costumes in this show. They weren't necessarily anything special to the naked eye, but they were just so 60s. From the floral skirt and blouse I wore in the beginning of the show to the red sweater and plaid pedal pushers I wore toward the end, I was just obsessed with how I got to dress for this part.

I seriously loved this sweater and plaid pant combo. And the pin I got to wear (which was the pin Kim gets from her boyfriend, Hugo, at the beginning of the show).

Singing "Ed Sullivan" with my onstage parents and brother. One of the highlights.

And yes, of course I got to talk on the phone during this show. Because it basically mirrored my high school life.

  1. I love your TBT posts! This is so cute. I did a little acting in high school myself but just didn't have the heart in college. I wish I had stuck to it!

    1. I'm not exactly sure what you're asking, sorry. This is a TBT post from a play I acted in back in the 90s.
