Beauty as Art: Balenciaga Florabotanica and Rosabotanica Fragrances

Once in awhile, a product comes along that's so undeniably beautiful, there's nothing you can do but pine and yearn for it until it becomes yours. In the case of Balenciaga Florabotanica Eau de Parfum and Balenciaga Rosabotanica Eau de Parfum, this feeling became twofold.

As soon as I laid eyes upon both of these bottles, I just knew they had to be mine. It actually became a bit of an obsession -- every time I would walk into a Sephora, I headed straight for Florabotanica and Rosabotanica. I didn't even care whether they smelled good (which, coincidentally, they do). I just wanted to own these bottles, place them on my vanity and stare at them forever and ever.

As luck would have it, I finally got my hands (and nose) on both of them. And ever since, my life has felt enriched, happy, glorious. (Am I being overly dramatic? I think not.)

Florabotanica is bewitching and mysterious. Notes of carnation, wild mint, Turkish rose essence and white amber combine with hemp leaves and vetiver roots for a scent that's at once velvety and flowery, modern and sophisticated. It also celebrates former Balenciaga designer Nicolas Ghesquiere's futuristic perspective on the house of Balenciaga, which is especially reflected in the striped bottle stopper and clean architectural lines of the bottle. This scent is perfect when you want to exude confidence and sexiness for a night out on the town.
Balenciaga Florabotanica Eau de Parfum is $100 for 1.7 fl. oz. at sephora.com.

Rosabotanica is based on a contemporary green rose accord that's mixed with milky fig leaves and white amber. The scent is lighter than that of Florabotanica but no less alluring or sensual. The experimental rose notes lend it an obvious floral overtone while the fig leaves and white amber give it a touch of spice. I am completely in love with the sweeping, colorful floral design on the bottle (that comes from recent Balenciaga clothing collections) mixed with the striped stopper.

To be honest, the first time I laid eyes on these fragrances, I was reminded of Tim Burton's Beetlejuice. The striped stoppers on each of the bottles made me think of both Beetlejuice's suit and of the house that Catherine O'Hara's character redecorates after Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis leave. They both have a touch of the macabre for me, which, when mixed with the more beautiful floral scents, make them immediate keepers.

Flower power? I'd say so.
