Well, Orly Space Cadet -- one of the polishes from Fall 2010's Cosmic FX Collection -- is exactly like that. Sometimes it's purple, sometimes it's blue, sometimes it's green ... and it always, ALWAYS packs a bunch of shimmer and sparkle.

I decided to sport this mani for my trip to Indiana this weekend -- I'm heading back to Bloomington for a little trip down memory lane with a few of my nearest and dearest friends. I'm absolutely in love with this color -- I love the shimmer, I love the smoothness with which it applies, I love the ever-changing hues! Totally a win.

Sugary Sweet: Fresh Brown Sugar Bath & Shower Gel

I have a confession to make: I have an incurable sweet tooth. If there's a dessert in sight, I will most certainly be eating it. So when I came across Fresh Brown Sugar Bath & Shower Gel, you'd better believe I developed a voracious love for it immediately.

The shower gel is formulated with real brown sugar, which prevents moisture loss and nourishes the skin. It also contains shea butter and four precious oils -- evening primrose, sweet almond, apricot kernel and jojoba -- to soften and condition the skin. And the zesty citrus scent that accompanies it? So divine.

Fresh Brown Sugar Bath & Shower Gel retails for $18.50 at fresh.com.

Salon and Spa Directory: Drybar

If you're in Los Angeles, I implore you to check out Drybar. The salon specializes in one thing -- blowouts -- and believe me when I say they are masters of their craft. I truly love the salon's philosophy: "No cuts. No color. Just blowouts."

My friend Jenny and I both had the opportunity to experience blowouts at the Studio City location while on my vacation this past week, and I have one word for the experience from start to finish. WOW. My stylist, the fabulous Tara Bouillet, walked me through the Lookbook -- a collection of the various styles to choose from. Rather than just telling your stylist "I want my hair straight," for example, you pick from the following "poisons":

Straight Up (simple and straight)
Manhattan (sleek and smooth)
Southern Comfort (big hair with volume)
Cosmopolitan (lots of loose curls)
Mai Tai (messy and beachy)
Shirley Temple (pre-teen blowout)

I obviously went for the Manhattan, since I like to get my hair as straight as humanly possible. After an amazing shampoo/conditioner/head massage at the shampoo bowl, Tara led me back to my chair and proceeded to give me the BEST BLOWOUT EVER. Seriously, my hair was so pin straight, with not one strand out of place or one frizzy flyaway, it was a true miracle -- especially since it was pouring outside that day! My blowout lasted for three days, which is really saying something since I even traveled from LA to NYC in that time.

With my gal Jenny after our fabulous blowouts!

And here's the best part. Every blowout is only $35. Yes, $35, regardless of hair type, texture or length! That's the best blowout deal I've found, especially for such an adorable and upscale salon.

Another pic of Jenny and me post blowout!

A Double Mani of the Week! Sephora by OPI Read My Palm and Deborah Lippmann Naked

Well, this week I decided to do not one, but TWO manicures in the same night! I was testing out polishes and thought it would be fun. (I also thought it would help me get through my bag of polishes to try -- which is currently at well over 100 -- a lot quicker!)

Sephora, Sephora by OPI, Sephora by OPI Nail Polish, Sephora by OPI Read My Palm, nail, nails, nail polish, polish, lacquer, nail lacquer, mani, manicure, mani of the weekI started out with something a little daring -- Sephora by OPI Read My Palm, a gorgeous turquoise-teal.

Deborah Lippmann, Deborah Lippmann Nail Polish, Deborah Lippmann Naked, Deborah Lippmann Spring 2011, Deborah Lippmann Naked Spring 2011, nail, nails, nail polish, polish, lacquer, nail lacquer, mani, manicure, mani of the weekI followed it up with Deborah Lippmann Naked, a pretty pinkish nude.

I will say that while I love both colors in the bottle, I'm more thrilled with Naked on my tips than Read My Palm. I had to apply Read My Palm twice to get the still-not-perfect mani -- and even with the thinnest coats, it was pretty gloppy. Naked, however, glided right onto the nail and left a super-creamy finish.

What's on your nails this week? Let me know in the comments!

My New Favorite Earrings: Alexis Bittar Gold Large Interlaced Earrings

Alexis Bittar, Alexis Bittar earrings, Alexis Bittar jewelry, Alexis Bittar Gold Large Interlaced Earrings, earrings, jewelryHave you ever been to Abbot Kinney in Venice? Well, I went for the first time while I was in LA over the weekend, and WOW. What an amazing collection of stores! At the top of my list was, of course, Alexis Bittar -- and, true to form, I simply had to make a purchase. After combing through each and every case three times and picking out a bunch of possible pieces, I settled on the Gold Large Interlaced Earrings.

Now, these earrings are not for the faint of heart. They're unbelievably large -- they hang down to my neck! But, with that being said, they're actually extremely lightweight -- I don't even feel them hanging from my ears.

I love the intricate interlocking liquid links that form an almost cage-like design. These earrings are so different from everything else in my collection -- I've already worn them three times, and I've only owned them since Saturday! My jewelry collection is most definitely unbelievably better now that these earrings are a part of it.

The Alexis Bittar Gold Large Interlaced Earrings retail for $195. If you can't make it to an Alexis Bittar store, you can purchase them at alexisbittar.com.

Salon and Spa Directory: The Ritz-Carlton Los Angeles Signature Massage

massage, spa, Salon and Spa Directory, The Ritz-Carlton Los Angeles, The Ritz-Carlton Los Angeles Signature Massage, spa treatmentAnyone who knows me knows that when I go on vacation, I check out at least one beauty treatment. I simply can't go to another city without seeing what they have to offer in the ways of massages, facials, nails, hair and all the rest. So, of course, I simply had to indulge in the Ritz-Carlton Signature Massage at the Ritz-Carlton Los Angeles during my trip this past week.

Walk into the spa and immediately be whisked away to an oasis in the middle of downtown Los Angeles. The locker room is so decadent, replete with bed-like lounge chairs in both the lounge area and the huge steam room! And the coed lounge area outside the locker room has a make-your-own granola bar, berry water, more bed-like lounge chairs and even cashmere blankets.

But once in my treatment room with the very soothing and capable Jennifer, the real treat began. In only 50 minutes, my muscles were kneaded, rubbed, massaged, and worked so well, I fell asleep on the table and felt like jelly when I finally woke up. Jennifer was absolutely amazing! (My sincere apologies to her for the unbelievable knot in my left shoulder.)

The Ritz-Carlton Signature Massage at the Ritz-Carlton Los Angeles is $135 for 50 minutes and $195 for 80 minutes. For more information on this service and the rest of the luxurious services offered at the spa, visit ritzcarlton.com.

First Look Fridays: Makeup Artist Emily Katz

One of my all-time favorite TV shows? LOST. So I'm super excited to bring you my interview today with the fabulous makeup artist behind the series, the one and only Emily Katz! Emily is fascinating and super knowledgeable -- read on to discover how she first got involved in the makeup industry, the lip product she couldn't live without on the LOST set, and so much more.

Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
Originally from the East Coast, and grew up all across America, from NY to Hawaii! I've trained in the fine arts (predominately painting and sculpture) since I was a child.

How did you first become interested in beauty, and what led you to become a makeup artist?
As a watercolorist, the esthetics of beauty have always been a large part of who I am.
My interest in the world of fashion, beauty and makeup was invigorated from an international modeling career (runway back in the day). And I was a ballet and modern dancer, so stage makeup was something with which I was already familiar from childhood. Looking back, it's all a convergence of a natural evolution toward doing makeup for film and TV. I do have to say that it was never "the plan," unlike many now who focus on MakeUp as a career. For me, it was serendipity.

I had actually planned to be either a medical specialist (MD in Neurosciences) or a famous painter ... yikes, big dreams, I was in pre-med track and the arts ... needless to say the artist side of my nature overwhelmed the science, however I still hold a rapt interest in the science of the human body, which has actually assisted me in some of the effects I've needed to accomplish for jobs that are realistic. I've seen much of the real thing so I have a very lucid point of reference. The painting theme has been actualized on some level -- I get to paint people as my canvas for a living. It's pretty remarkable. I feel very blessed to be able to pursue and utilize these abilities.

You were the makeup artist for one of my favorite shows of all time, LOST. What can you tell me about the experience of working on such a game-changing show?
LOST was an amazing experience, and truly an iconic television moment. I'm honored to have been a part of what became woven into the fabric of society at the time.

The challenges of working on LOST were many, some physical ... if the actors were seen up on top of the mountain ledge, guess what? So were we! Along with the physicality of the show, there was the need to create makeups that were uber-durable under some of the most trying climatic conditions, plus the network wanted the women to still be beautiful and appear as if they had no makeup on at all. In fact, most of them had makeup on any bit of skin that was exposed. There was a crew of some wonderfully talented people who helped enact all the makeup designs.

Sunscreen, bug spray, fake dirt, tan, sunburn, often blood, bruises, not to forget the sweat ... sprayed on or self-generated ... and how to make all those layers appear as if there was absolutely NO makeup on anyone! The focus was always on how to keep the skin looking like it was solely that -- naked skin, even though it wasn't.

Another challenge was keeping the actresses' skin as impeccably beautiful as possible. So a knowledge of skincare and how to deal with all kinds of odd things the tropical climate keep throwing at us was imperative! We faced numerous challenges that have deeply added to my repertoire of experience. My lord, I sure understand sunscreens and compositional elements of products on a whole new level. It was about how to find products or help actually create them, that would stay on for the duration of a shooting day.

What were some of your tips and tricks on the set of LOST to keep the actors looking so great even under the sun for so many hours a day?
High SPF sunscreens are paramount to ensuring actors didn't change color in the midst of the shooting schedule, or get burned. I know there is some controversy in certain circles about the benefits/negatives of sunscreen. Since the jury's still out, I recommend everyone, no matter what their genetic background, wear sunscreen (particularly in the sub
tropics) daily.
There are a number of excellent products out now that cling to the skin without feeling heavy or "icky," that do not turn ghastly white or blue. It was truly a winnowing process to find which ones did or did not work out for on camera. Someone's favorite might have gone white, or run in the eyes when hammered with the water/sweat sprays ... all kinds of elements you don't need to think about in the course of normal life that had to be carefully considered on the show.

But, the answer to the question remains: wear a daily sunscreen/moisturizer. No matter where you live! It's the SPF that may vary. I also want to add that although we're told there is evidence that no higher than a certain number of SPF is effective, truly I have seen before my eyes the results that a very high SPF (like a 90) have over, let's say a 30, through the course of a day. I defer to what my experience has shown me!

So that the makeups stay intact and not disintegrate, blot papers help mitigate oiliness and sheen in the wrong places, while maintaining the very fresh and immediate look that LOST became known for.

Mascaras were held in place, even in the pouring rain and salt water, with Benefit SheLac, one of my standard turn-to products. Even waterproof-alone mascara would descend in the heat and humidity, but with the addition of Shelac, it clung where it was supposed to for hours.

We used ChapStick to keep lips from drying out (counterintuitive to what would happen on a deserted island -- they still had to look good!). The Moisturising Chapstick isn't waxy, same goes for the Neutrogena lip balm. Neither impact a makeup by imparting a sheen to the lips so it's very effective in looking utterly natural. Sometimes the good old standard is just the best thing!

(Editor's note: If you're curious about the various products Emily used, here's a list of some of her favorites from her time on the show!)

Neutrogena Age Shield Sunblock FACE SPF 90
Dry Touch spf 55, Sport 45 ...we went through boatloads of this
Jan Marini Sunscreen, Transformation Creme, transformation eye creme
PCA face and Body sunscreen
Derma Doctor Face and Body Shield sunscreen
Anthelios SPF 50, 60 and tinted
Jurlique sun lotion spf 30, Silk Dust powder
B Kamins bio Maple lipbalm, Bio Maple body lotion
Chapstick (all of them, especially Moisturizing and flavored)
La Mer The Concentrate (truly amazing for healing scars!! it works!!!)
La Mer hand creme and Moisturizing Lotion
Dermalogica Active Moisture Calming Cleanser, Special Cleansing Gel, Ceramide Eye Gel
Mario Badescu Enzyme Cleansing Gel (takes off even the fake tan, dirt, sweat, and didn't irritate even sensitive skin. It's fab), Wheat Germ Body Lotion
Lancome concealer
Benefit SheLac, Some Kinda Gorgeous foundation, Benetint, Posie tint, lipsticks
M.A.C Face and Body Makeup, Matte Bronzer, eyeshadows (often used as brow color), lip colors
L'Oreal Voluminous mascara
Chanel Nude and Natural lip pencils, pressed powder
Clinique lip pencils, eyeliners, Teddy shadow quad, many other colors, Shy and Rosy creme blushes, spray on sunscreen, SPF 50 body sunscreen, line smoothing concealers
Cargo Matte Bronzer, blushes, liglosses, Sand pencil, lipsticks
Dior eyeshadows, bases, mascaras
Estee Lauder foundations, blushes (especially Rose, Peach and Plum Nuances) and creme blushes, Illusionist waterproof mascara (unfortunately discontinued), lipsticks

Cetaphil cleansers and lotions

What are your top makeup essentials?
MakeUp Sponges
Jan Marini Sunscreen -- usually tinted
Cargo bronzer in Matte Medium
Cargo JetLag concealer
Dior, Clinique, Estee Lauder lipsticks and glosses
Chapstick or Neutrogena lipbalm -- always with me!!!
Estee Lauder ColorStay eyeliner

What are your top 3 makeup tips?
1) Good skin is the basis of everything. Take care of yourself, cleanse, protect, moisturize, antioxidant, peels, microdermabrasion -- whatever you need to do. The power of great skin cannot be underestimated, and there's a lot that can be done to bring it right if it's a bit troubled.

2) USE SUNSCREEN! I like multitask products, so a tinted sunscreen really works for me
BLOT instead of powdering for touchups. It will diminish the possible cake-iness that can build up through the day. If you love a totally matte finish, blot, then powder.

3) BLEND EDGES. Always make sure the edges of your foundation (which must match your skin!) blend into your neck under the jawline, and make sure your blush is not a big stripe. Feather those edges. Refer to make up sponges to help blend.

Being a makeup artist must be fun -- but what do you do in your spare time?
I paint, draw, read copiously and always have a novel that I'm reading -- sometimes a couple simultaneously. I also am a contributing writer to Skin,Inc. (spa and skincare) Magazine, and give private lessons and seminars. There's always something I'm interested in, and I have a great family. I truly am never bored.

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare: My Must-Haves

Do you ever have an "Aha!" moment in your skincare routine? You go along in the world, trying different products with varied results, and then all of a sudden ... AHA! You find the products that are so amazing, and work so well for your skin, you wonder how you could have ever tried anything else. Well, such is the case with Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare. I've come across a few products from the line recently that are so amazing, it's all I can do not to shout from the rooftops! Check out my favorites.

Intense Hydra Mask
A blend of antioxidants and Hyaluronic acid combine to minimize wrinkles, increase circulation and firm the skin -- all things I worry about now that I'm getting (gasp!) older. Aside from making my skin look amazing -- which, to be sure, it did -- this is one of the most fun products I've ever used. With the miniature mixing bowl, fan brush and two-step mask system, it's like a little science experiment in a box! I love the second step, which is a self-heating mask that stays on top of the skin for about 15 minutes before you smooth the rest into the skin and remove the excess.
$62 at dgskincare.com

Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel
Truth be told, I'm always a little afraid of peels. I've had some bad experience in the past, since my skin is uber-sensitive, so I normally stay away from them. But this peel is so gentle, even the most sensitive of skin can benefit from it! Like the mask above, it's a two-step process -- you smooth each pre-soaked towelette over your face and neck on a daily basis, waiting about 2 minutes in between each one. They work to reduce fine lines and enlarge pores, fight blemishes and eliminate dark spots and redness. I've been taking them with me when I travel, and I'm super impressed with the results!
$80 for a pack of $30 at dgskincare.com

All-Over Blemish Solution
Let's face it -- we all get pimples. But we don't want anyone to know about them, right? That's where this handy-dandy little product comes in. Formulated with salicylic acid, it works both to eliminate and prevent blackheads and to control oil. I love the mattifying texture -- it's so different than any other blemish fighter I've used -- and it makes my skin both look and feel amazing!
$42 at dgskincare.com

Getting Handy: Tocca Cleopatra Crema de Mano

Tocca, Tocca Cleopatra, Tocca Cleopatra Crema de Mano Rich Hand Cream, Tocca Cleopatra Rich Hand Cream, Tocca hand cream, hand cream, moisturizer, lotion, hand lotionI have an obsession with two things -- Tocca's Cleopatra scent and rich hand creams. So Tocca Cleopatra Creme de Mano (AKA Rich Hand Cream) is directly up my alley.

Cleopatra has been my favorite scent from Tocca for years -- the mix of cucumber and grapefruit is alluring, feminine, light, crisp and utterly delightful. I've long appreciated it in both candle and fragrance form, so why not introduce it into my moisturizing regimen as well?

And this hand cream definitely ranks right up there with my favorites. A blend of coconut, avocado and jojoba seed oils, along with aloe, chamomile and shea butter moisturize, nourish and condition the skin instantly. The tiniest amount is needed -- no more than a dime size -- for both hands, which is pretty unbelievable when many hand creams take much more to do the job! And, of course, I love that it sinks into skin immediately without any greasy residue left behind.

If you're looking for a hand cream that smells amazing and makes skin feel super soft, this is the one for you.

Tocca Cleopatra Crema de Mano retails for $8 at tocca.com.

My Experience with Laser Hair Removal at Completely Bare, Volume 2

Completely Bare, laser hair removal, hair removalWhile I'm a fan of the dark hair on my head, when it comes to my underarms, all bets are off. I despise having to shave every day, and I finally decided to do something about it ... I'm taking the plunge and trying laser hair removal at Completely Bare! Follow my journey over the next several months as I chronicle the progress!

This past Saturday was my second laser hair removal session with the fabulous Ildi. I actually went a week ago, but had to come back -- because, unbeknownst to me, I had shaved too close to the session and Ildi couldn't see the roots well enough! Lesson learned -- go a few days between shaves when the laser appointment is coming up.

In any case, Ildi took one look at the progress since the first session and said I'm actually further along than almost any other client she's worked with! She was really impressed at how much the hair has lessened in just one session.

I have to say that I'm really pleased with the results thus far as well. About two weeks after my first session, I already noticed a decrease in both the amount of hair growing back and the time it took to come in. Where I was shaving once or even twice a day before, now I can go up to three days in between shaves with nary a hair to be seen!

The second session was a lot easier than the first, now that I knew what to expect. I slipped on the protective sunglasses (to shield my eyes from the light) and let Ildi get to work. She zapped each underarm about 10 times -- again, like the first time, it wasn't painful, just quick pricks that were done in about one second!

I'm really excited to see how much better my underarms continue to look. Check back in late April for Volume 3 of my laser hair removal experience!

Disclosure: This session was provided free of charge by Completely Bare for potential review.

First Look Fridays: Hairstylist Peter Gray

If you've followed this blog at all over the past few years, you'll know that I think the world of hairstylist Peter Gray. Season after season, his creations at shows like Betsey Johnson and Badgley Mischka have inspired and amazed me to no end. So I am thrilled to bring you my interview with him this week! Read on to find out how he first became interested in hairstyling, the brush he simply can't live without, and so much more.

Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
Grew up in Zimbabwe, went to boarding school in South Africa, ended up cutting school friends' hair to get around strict school regulations re hair length etc. Caught the attention of a top salon owner whose kids went to the same school, he offered me a Saturday job which became a life.

How did you first become interested in hair, and what led you to become a hairstylist?
It was the 80's and hair was a vital accessory. School rules and the local barber didn't lend themselves to this and I ended up cutting friends' and school staff members' hair, even the headmaster. I just enjoyed how hair looked and made people feel. I was really into music and the hair that went with it at that time.

Being a Saturday boy opened my eyes to the potential creatively, educationally and for travel, that university was not going to offer. After 2 1/2 years and qualifying in South Africa I headed for London and adventure!

When did you make the move from salon work to editorial, and what propelled you to make the change?
From the very beginning I knew salon life wasn't for me. I worked a few years at Cazaly and Co in London where there was a heavy editorial bias and shows were commonplace before moving to Sassoon and getting into education, where shows and pictures featured heavily. At Sassoon I became their first Editorial Director, doing shoots and ads for the salons/schools and the product company internationally. After 13 years it was time to move on.

Greg Cazaly, David Adams and Ray Allington were my first mentors followed by years helping Eugene Souleiman.

At Sassoon, Avram Finkelstein and Vidal himself mentored and showed me that the shows and the editorial side was where my future lay.

You've worked with some of the world's biggest designers over the years at Fashion Week. What do you love about the experience, and are there any looks that have stood out as your favorites?
The challenge, the inspiration and finally the adrenaline! I try [to] approach each designer as a unique situation, and to put in and get the most out of each and every show! Martin Margiela for Hermes and his own shows are my all-time favorite collaboration!

Look-wise I've had the privilege to work with so many talented people, the most rewarding look is always the one that marries with the collection best!

What are your top 5 hair essentials?
1) Good quality combs -- Japanese

2) Mason Pearson Brush

3) a powerful hairdryer (Parlux)

4) Dressmaking elastic

5) Thickening product

What are your top 3 hair tips?
1) Spend the money on quality shampoo and conditioner.

2) Don't try to achieve catwalk looks without the appropriate base products in your hair.

3) Don't follow trends, always follow what you feel.

What is the most rewarding part of what you do?
Every single job has its own rewards -- working with a fantastic team, whether photo or hair, and sharing ideas with them is the most rewarding part!

Being a hairstylist must be fun -- but what do you do in your spare time?
Direct music videos and short films.

Well, That's Rich: Clark's Botanicals Ultra Rich Lip Balm

Anyone who knows me knows that I have an intense lip balm obsession. I carry at least three around with me at all times, just so reaching into my purse to find one doesn't have to be such a chore. But, while I do have a major arsenal of balms at the ready, it takes a lot to make it into the cherished few I call my favorites. Clark's Botanicals Ultra Rich Lip Balm has most definitely made the cut.

To begin with, I love the story behind the Clark's Botanicals brand. Founder Francesco Clark suffered a paralyzing spinal cord injury during a swimming pool diving accent back in 2002, losing the ability not only to walk but even to do something so seemingly easy as to sweat. When this led to clogged pores and chronic breakouts, Francesco and his father, a physician, worked to develop botanically-based formulas that rebalanced Francesco's skin. When word of mouth about their products grew, Francesco turned it into a business, starting to sell them in 2005.

Every product in the Clark's Botanicals line features jasmine absolute, an essential oil that rebalances skin and works as an anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and immuno-stimulant. The Ultra Rich Lip Balm is no different. But along with this miracle ingredient, my new favorite lip balm also features shea butter, aloe leaf extract, jojoba and sweet almond oil, meaning my lips are left feeling unbelievably soft and smooth hour after hour. The balm also includes marine collagen microspheres, which act like miniature water reservoirs, ensuring that moisture and hydration are never far from my pout.

I hope you'll join me in discovering the amazingness that is the Ultra Rich Lip Balm, and while you're at it, try the rest of the products in the Clark's Botanicals line.

Clark's Botanicals Ultra Rich Lip Balm retails for $19 at clarksbotanicals.com.

Seriously, I've never come across a lipstick that's not only the ideal shade of nude, but is also so creamy and moisturizing, it feels like a balm. Until now.

Sheen Supreme Lipstick combines the color impact of a lipstick with the shine sheen of a lipgloss (or, in M.A.C's case, Lipglass) -- creating the absolute perfect gloss/stick hybrid for which I've been searching for YEARS now. It's creamy, glossy and glides onto the lips without any stickiness or tackiness left behind. Bare Again imparts such a gorgeous nude onto my pout, I simply can't believe it didn't exist before.

Interview with Sucker Punch Makeup Artist Rosalina Da Silva

If you're like me, you see a lot of movies based on the makeup looks alone. And Sucker Punch, out in theaters March 25, is no exception. Luckily, my gal Rosalina Da Silva was the makeup artist on this movie, and she granted me with an exclusive look at how she created all of the various looks!

Each of the main characters has such a unique, different look. How did you come up with the concepts for each of the girls?
Every girl had a very different and individual personality in the story. Through weeks of prep we defined and created their character, that best suited the illusion created by Zack Snyder. Wardrobe was a big part of it as well -- then we changed hair color and lengths, the makeup just developed to bring the look together.

I love the look you created for Babydoll. What products did you use to get the look?
Babydoll was a lot of fun, inspired by Brigitte Bardot with a splash of Anime characters. A sweet, innocent look but at the same time very fearless. [I used] a 60's eyeliner, long full lashes, nude lips.

There's so much black eye makeup in this movie! What were your go-to products for characters like Amber and Blondie?
My old favorite eyeliner, M.A.C Fluidline in Blacktrack -- tried and true. We airbrushed the foundations on -- we used various brands, Armani, Kevin Aucoin, Kett, Kryolan.

On long-running shows I often change the foundations, as the skin changes due to the long days on set. Sometimes lack of sleep, dehydration, you need to adjust to achieve the best and smoothest results.

What was the experience like on this movie, with all the special effects?
Most of the special effects were in post production, so there was a lot of green screen and staring into empty space. In general the experience of working on this movie was exhilarating ... and exhausting!

How was it working with a bunch of girls for this movie? Were they all really into makeup?
The girls loved makeup! Who doesn't? They were totally into experimenting, pushing the envelope to find their character through their makeup look. We really went to extremes on this movie due to Zack Snyder's incredible vision and the fantasy world that he created. There were no limits, never too much in the world of glamour, color, lashes, glitter and crystals.

Makeup Artist Gregory Arlt's Tips for Creating Michelle Trachtenberg's "Take Me Home Tonight" Premiere Look

Michelle Trachtenberg, Gregory Arlt, Michelle Trachtenberg makeup, Take Me Home Tonight, Take Me Home Tonight premiere, Take Me Home Tonight movie premiere, premiere, movie premiere, celeb, celebrity, red carpet
If you thought Michelle Trachtenberg looked gorgeous at the premiere of Take Me Home Tonight last week, you're not alone. And the master behind her gorgeousness? None other than Gregory Arlt (for M.A.C. Cosmetics/Exclusive Artists Management)! Read on to find out how he created the look -- and how you can do it at home!

"My inspiration was her beautiful dress," Gregory says. "The grey with the metallic silver details made me instantly pull out my eyeshadow palette of greys, silvers, gunmetals and black. Also, Michelle's eyes are like a makeup artist's dream! So lovely and expressive, with lots of room to work."

All of the makeup Gregory used to create this look was by M.A.C.

SKIN:
"Michelle's skin is FLAWLESS and requires very little!" Gregory says. Here's what he used:
Prep+Prime Skin
Studio Sculpt Foundation mixed with a drop of Care Blends Essential Oil "to extend the foundation and make it go on more sheer/smooth," Gregory says. He applied it with a #190 brush.
Studio Careblends Powder in Light applied with a #150 brush. "This is my new favorite powder!" Gregory says. "It feels like silk going on and is actually conditioning to the skin."
Well Dressed Powder Blush on the cheeks

EYES:
Brows: Lingering pencil
Brow Highlight: Dazzlelight shadow applied with a #242 brush
Crease: Copperplate shadow applied with a #224 brush
Lids: Satin Taupe shadow applied with a #252 brush
Outer corners: Smut shadow applied with a #275 brush and blended with a #224 brush
Liner (upper): Blacktrack Fluidline with a #210 brush
Liner (inner eye): Feline pencil
Liner (lower lash line): Smut shadow applied with a #266 brush
Mascara: Haute & Naughty Lash ("My new favorite!" Gregory says.)

LIPS:
"Michelle's natural lip color is a gorgeous plum red shade, though too much color for the strong eyes," Gregory says. "I hated to cancel the color as its so amazing, but I toned it down with foundation and applied our new favorite Lipglass -- Emancipation from the M.A.C Wonder Woman collection. Michelle let out an excited squeal when I pulled it out of my kit!"

And if you're wondering how to create a smoky eye in under five minutes? Gregory has some foolproof tips for you!

"For a QUICK smoky eye at home, all you really need are two shadows and three brushes," Gregory says. Here's the formula for success:

One light eyeshadow (try M.A.C Shroom)
One dark eyeshadow (try M.A.C Smut)
Three shadow brushes (dense flat shadow brush like M.A.C #252, fluffy blending brush like M.A.C #224 and angled defining brush like M.A.C #266)

Gregory recommends beginning with the eyes, before your foundation -- "that way, if any falls from your brush to the skin, it's easier to clean it up [and] then apply the foundation and powder," he says. Put a small amount of the lighter color on one side of the #252 brush and use a small amount as a wash over the entire eye. Then apply the dark shadow with the #252 brush to your lids. "Unless you sleep for a living, you wear your makeup with your eyes open, so apply it that way!" Gregory says. "Tilt your head back slightly, lift your brows, look down into the mirror and begin to apply."

Depending on your eye shape, Gregory recommends applying a small amount just under and on the browbone, especially toward the outer corners of the eyes. "It may look a little harsh at first, but here's where your other brushes come in," he says. Put a small amount of the dark shadow on the tip of your #224 blending brush and blend through the crease with a back and forth motion -- "like a windshield wiper," he says. "This will blend it beautifully." Then, Gregory recommends adding the dark shadow to your angled #266 brush and lining the lower lashline. Apply mascara, "and voila!" he says.

And for even more drama? Gregory recommends applying black pencil to the inner waterline and upper lashes.

First Look Fridays: Celebrity Manicurist Naja Rickette

Want to meet the woman behind Lady Gaga's nails for Poker Face, behind Fergie's amazing Minx, and the one responsible for all of Mary J. Blige's amazing nail looks? Well, look no further than celebrity manicurist Naja Rickette. As you can see, she's glitzed up the nails of some of the biggest names in the business! Read on to discover how she got her start in the manicure industry, her favorite top coat and so much more.

Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
I am born and raised in New Jersey. In the past most people would make fun of that but now everyone is all over NJ due to the reality shows. I would have to say Jersey Shore was pretty much my high school life. Thank God I moved to LA for my twenties. i actually went to culinary school right after high school and worked in restaurant at the Jersey Shore.

How did you first become interested in nails, and what led you to become a manicurist?
I was fed up with being in a uniform. I went to catholic school my whole life, then culinary school, then wore the chef uniform to work. I decided I was going to move to California and wasn't sure what would be my next career, but I knew the criteria would be a job where I could wear whatever I wanted.

One of the first jobs I got once I moved to LA was a receptionist at a day spa. I had never been to a spa before. I fell in love with the whole spa industry. I viewed it as the modern day hospital. For instance, if one really put spa practices into practice in their daily life it could ward off later trip to the hospital. Truly preventative medicine.

The manicurist at that spa had off on Sundays and Mondays. Clients constantly wanted manis on those two days. After about the 20th person said, "Well, do you know ANYWHERE I can get a mnai/pedi in Marina Del Rey on Sunday or Monday?" I said, "Yes, in a few months we will be offering nails services on those days." I had never had a mani before myself or been to a nail salon. I went to school as a business move to capitalize on an area that had a need that wasn't being fulfilled. Now, I do some of the greatest pop stars and my childhood music idol, Mary J. Blige. Just proves my motto: "Jump and grow your wings on the way down." I had no clue about nails, nail polish, pedicures or anything -- I realized an opportunity and I JUMPED!!

You have a very impressive celebrity clientele! What are some of the favorite looks you've created?
I have been doing gold and silver Minx for 3 years now, but I still love the cover of Lady Gaga's Poker Face with her clean makeup and gold nails. It's classic!

I used Minx black and chrome metallic stripes on Fergie, which became her signature look for a few months. There is a distribution company in the UK that actually calls that pattern Fergie Stripes now which I think is so cool!

My all time favorite look is a set of nails I did for a nail trade magazine called Nail Pro. I used a matte dark deep blue with a beautiful almond shape nail (my fave!!) and then piled staples on ends of the nail. I like very couture, avante-guard nails. Purely for fashion not function.

You introduced Lady Gaga to the fabulousness of Minx. What was it like working with her and creating such flashy manicures for her albums and videos?
It was super fantastic. I knew the very first time I met her that she was going to be the next big thing. She came to my salon because she was shooting her first video "Just Dance" the following day. She loved all the Minx and we had a fun time picking through them. She was nervous and excited for her very first video. She asked me about reflexology and asked if I knew about energy. She said, "How is my energy?" I told her, "You are ready. You are going to be the next Madonna." She is really a creative creature. Always has been, always will be.

What are your favorite nail polishes and why?
That is a very hard question. I am a color addict. For French and natural shades I like to use Essie.

OPI's brush design is genius.

My fave I would have to say is Deborah Lippmann. She is a celeb manicurist and her polish is the most amazing thing ever!! You can definitely tell that a manicurist created it. The bottle, the brush, the consistency of the polish, the colors. They are truly amazing. She collaborates with her clients and creates colors with them. She has MJB, Cher and Sarah Jessica Parker and recently did one with Gaga.

What are your top 5 nail-specific product essentials?

1) Orly Bonder base coat
2) Seche Viche top coat
3) Blue Cross Cuticle Remover
4) Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Cream
5) CND Solar Speed Spray (quick dry but smells like almond oil)

Do you have any product favorites outside the nail realm? What are they?
Adidas sneakers, Maybelline mascara, Chanel lipgloss and probiotics.

What are your top nail tips?
Cuticle oil.

Don't pick. Don't pick. Don't pick.

Being a manicurist must be fun -- but what do you do in your spare time?
Love going anywhere with my dog, CC. Read all things business and apply all things spiritually. Dancing, painting and just walking around taking photos.

Salon and Spa Directory: Bliss Spa's No "Zit" Sherlock Facial

Bliss, Bliss Spa, Bliss No Let's get something straight. Blemishes are my least favorite thing in the entire world. So when I had the chance to check out the No "Zit" Sherlock Facial at Bliss, I most certainly took advantage. My skin has been freaking out as of late, with more pimples and red spots popping up than ever before, so this facial couldn't have come at a better time.

My aesthetician, Zena, couldn't have been nicer or more knowledgeable when it came to what was happening with my skin. She applied creams, masks, exfoliants and even a light peel with the most deft of touch, and when it came time to extractions? I. Didn't. Feel. A. Thing. It seriously felt like Zena was giving me a face massage ... the end result being clear pores that even looked smaller.

And my favorite part of this treatment? The zit-zapping light therapy that comes after the extractions! Both red and blue lights are used to clear the skin of bacteria and prevent future breakouts. It's so high-tech, yet at the same time strangely calming. (Truth be told, this is about the time in the facial where I fell asleep on the table.)

As with all of Bliss's treatments, I'm completely hooked. The No "Zit" Sherlock Facial is $165 for 75 minutes. Head to blissspa.com for more information and to book an appointment.
