The Self Care-antine Series: Soap & Glory Hand Food Hydrating Hand Cream

We're in a scary, uncertain time. None of us knows what the next day holds. There are new numbers released daily, new shelter-in-place orders, new ways of life. Many people have lost their jobs and have no idea how to pay their rents and mortgages. Many people don't know if they will have jobs to go back to when this is all over. Many of us are now confined to our homes, not knowing when these orders will be lifted or what the world will look like when things return to "normal." I've been thinking a lot about how to continue to care for myself during this time, especially when so many stores are shut down or no longer shipping products. How do I maintain some semblance of "normal" during all of this?

And, so, I conceived The Self Care-antine Series. (Thank you to my friend Jenny for helping me concept the name! I was talking to her last week about starting this series, and said I wanted to do a series on self care during quarantine, and this came out of us.) This is not meant to make light of anything happening with COVID-19. I know people who have contracted the disease. I have friends working on the front lines of ERs in Michigan and New York City. I have friends trapped on the Zaandam. However, at the same time, my life must go on in some small way during this time, as all of our lives must. So, while I shelter in place in Los Angeles, I'm looking at small ways to keep myself going. I'll be featuring different products that are available during this time and can, hopefully, bring you a small amount of joy as they are bringing to me. Up first: Soap & Glory Hand Food Hydrating Hand Cream.

Beautifying the Broken Ankle: First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Lotion

Post a comment!

First Aid Beauty, First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Lotion, lotion, moisturizer, broken ankle, Beautifying the Broken Ankle, moisturizing
I'm going to tell you something no one told me when I broke my ankle. THE EXPERIENCE DRIES YOUR SKIN OUT LIKE NOBODY'S BUSINESS. Picture this -- you can't put the broken area in water or slather lotion on it. It's trapped in a cast, or a splint, or a boot ... regardless, it's not exposed to the air. This continues for weeks on end. And then, finally, you're allowed to see the skin. You can touch it. You can (thank the lord) shower and moisturize. And by that point, it's too late ... BECAUSE YOUR SKIN HAS TAKEN ON A LIFE OF ITS OWN. It's morphed into something you don't even recognize anymore. And on top of worrying that you may never wear heels again, or you might not be able to do yoga or get on the elliptical, or standing at a concert might be too difficult, now you have to worry that your skin looks and feels like the leathery roommate from There's Something About Mary.

Hence this new series, Beautifying the Broken Ankle. I decided to (literally) take life into my own hands and start applying as many moisturizing products as I could to my dry, leathery skin, hoping against hope that they would do the trick. First up? First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Lotion.

I am typically not a lover of lavender. It just always feels too cloying and heavy for me, and the scent doesn't seem to dissipate. But there's just something about Crabtree & Evelyn Lavender Ultra-Moisturising Hand Therapy that draws me in.

Hydration. I really can't get enough of it, both in water consumption (I drink at least 2 liters a day) and in making my skin as nourished as possible. So it only stands to reason that Davines OI Hand Balm is my new favorite thing.

Ever since I moved to LA, my skin has been parched. I guess I just didn't really realize that moving to a dry climate would actually make my skin be, well, dry. I've been slathering on anything I can think of to restore moisture -- and one of the best products I've used is Bliss Blood Orange + White Pepper Body Butter.

Soften Your Winter-Ravaged Skin: Philosophy Living Grace Whipped Body Creme

Post a comment!

Philosophy, Philosophy Living Grace Whipped Body Creme, body cream, lotion, moisturizer, dry skin, winter skin
You know what I hate? Cracked, dry, red, peeling skin. And once the temperatures drop below 45, there's really no way to avoid it ... until I discovered Philosophy Living Grace Whipped Body Creme, that is.

You may remember that I already sang the praises of another Whipped Body Creme by Philosophy, Amazing Grace. Well, this one has all the same wonderful whipped texture and skin smoothing properties, but it incorporates the beautiful Living Grace scent. Notes of fresh neroli, lily of the valley and warm musk are inviting, calming and truly beautiful. Plus, it sinks right into skin and doesn't make it feel greasy or slippery, so you can go right back to typing on your keyboard or using your iPhone (or walking on a hardwood floor without skidding!).

Now, thankfully, my skin is now back to normal.

Philosophy Living Grace Whipped Body Creme retails for $30 at sephora.com.

I'm normally not a fan of scented hand creams -- or scented lotions of any kind, really. I just don't like cloying scents, which I feel like most lotions contain. Not the case, however, with Josie Maran Whipped Argan Oil Intensive Hand Cream.

Scrumptious Shea: The Best Shea Butter Body Lotions

Post a comment!

shea butter
Shea butter. We've all heard if it, and we know it's supposed to do something good for us, but what is it, really? Extracted from the nut of the African shea tree, shea butter is a fat originally used in cosmetics, cooking and even as a topical painkiller because it is loaded with fatty acids, melts at body temperature and binds well to water, making it a great, fast-acting and long-lasting oil.

So it's no surprise that there are tons of beauty products loaded with this special butter. This series will cover three different categories of shea-rich beauty products. Today, the body lotions that benefit from our favorite fat!
