One Step (Literally) at a Time: My Broken Ankle Journey Thus Far

Post a comment!

Beautifying the Broken Ankle, my broken ankle journey, breaking your ankle
I AM HEALED! Well, not exactly. But I'm getting closer.
In case you haven't heard, I broke my ankle two months ago. Well, really I'm a few days shy of that, since it happened on February 26, but I think it's close enough. And in that time, so much has happened. My life dramatically shifted in the immediate minutes, hours, days and weeks that followed, but I think this experience also impacts how I will live in the months and years to come. And I must admit I'm feeling pretty good right now, because I got some incredible news at my doctor's appointment this week, in addition to some other great things that have happened...

1) I CAN WALK AGAIN! Well, only with partial weight bearing right now, but I will be full weight bearing on May 2. In the meantime I can get around with crutches or a walker and put the ball of my foot on the ground. So life is pretty darned amazing right now. The photo above was taken just after I got the news -- not sure if you can tell from my jazz hands and huge smile, but I was fairly excited.

2) I am going back to Los Angeles on SUNDAY! I can't believe it -- I thought I would be in the Midwest for at least 6 more weeks. My timeline has sped up dramatically and I am BEYOND elated.

3) I lost weight during this entire experience! I can't stand on the scale to check, but I think I've lost at least 10 pounds. So something positive has come out of the whole thing!

Since it's #flashbackfriday and all, I thought I'd give you a little look into the past two months. No gross photos of my ankle pre or post surgery, I promise!

Beautifying the Broken Ankle: A Little #TuesdayShoesday Action

So here's the thing. I have a bit of a shoe problem (obsession?). The floor of my closet is lined with gorgeous pair of heels after gorgeous pair of heels. I've cultivated my collection rather perfectly, with everything from Manolo Blahnik and Christian Louboutin to DKNY and Dolce & Gabbana. But now I find myself in a bit of a conundrum, since my broken ankle is going to prevent me from wearing said gorgeous heels for the foreseeable future. Enter my solution: BUYING EVERY PAIR OF CUTE FLATS IN SIGHT.

Basically, I figure that just because I'm stuck with a foot that won't let me wear heels for awhile doesn't mean I can't still wear cute shoes. So I've been buying up the selection on multiple websites and in multiple stores for the past few weeks -- and, as you can see from the photo above, I think I've done quite well for myself! This is everything I've bought thus far.

Beautifying the Broken Ankle: First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Lotion

I'm going to tell you something no one told me when I broke my ankle. THE EXPERIENCE DRIES YOUR SKIN OUT LIKE NOBODY'S BUSINESS. Picture this -- you can't put the broken area in water or slather lotion on it. It's trapped in a cast, or a splint, or a boot ... regardless, it's not exposed to the air. This continues for weeks on end. And then, finally, you're allowed to see the skin. You can touch it. You can (thank the lord) shower and moisturize. And by that point, it's too late ... BECAUSE YOUR SKIN HAS TAKEN ON A LIFE OF ITS OWN. It's morphed into something you don't even recognize anymore. And on top of worrying that you may never wear heels again, or you might not be able to do yoga or get on the elliptical, or standing at a concert might be too difficult, now you have to worry that your skin looks and feels like the leathery roommate from There's Something About Mary.

Hence this new series, Beautifying the Broken Ankle. I decided to (literally) take life into my own hands and start applying as many moisturizing products as I could to my dry, leathery skin, hoping against hope that they would do the trick. First up? First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Lotion.

I'm typically not a fan of pale pinks and beiges when it comes to nail polish. But from the moment I laid eyes upon Deborah Lippmann Dirty Little Secret Gel Lab Pro Nail Polish from the Spring 2016 Afternoon Delight Collection, something about it really struck me.

I am typically not a lover of lavender. It just always feels too cloying and heavy for me, and the scent doesn't seem to dissipate. But there's just something about Crabtree & Evelyn Lavender Ultra-Moisturising Hand Therapy that draws me in.
