Beauty Event: Tinsley Mortimer at Saks

Have you been eagerly awaiting the release of Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss Reflect in Tinsley Pink as much as this beauty chick? Join the two of them for two-hour master classes, where you'll learn how to recreate Mortimer's favorite beauty looks for night and day using -- what else -- Tinsley Pink! Wallet-Friendly Wednesdays: Garnier Fructis Leave-In Conditioning Cream

Gorgeous hair is always an uphill battle, isn't it? Just when you think you've cleared the hurdle, there's a wrench thrown in the mix -- whether it's humidity, rain, a hair dryer that breaks mid-blowout. Luckily, Garnier Fructis Leave-In Conditioning Cream is here to save the day, no matter what obstacles you may come across in your quest for the perfect hair day. And if your hair is anything like this beauty chick's, you'll be super-excited to learn about this miracle worker. This 10.2 fl. oz. bottle packs quite a punch with fruit micro-oils that nourish, smooth and manage frizzy tresses. A dime-sized dollop is all you need -- even gals with thick, heavy hair need not coat their strands with more than that! Rather than making hair greasy or feel weighted down, it's literally weightless and makes each lock straighter, sleeker and smoother. Add to that with the fact that this product smells absolutely amazing -- a sweet-yet-tart fruity aroma that wafts out of the bottle and leaves a gorgeous scent behind on your hair -- and you'll be sold. And let's face it -- with the advent of summer and the horrible humidity it brings, don't you want to do whatever you can to combat the hair disaster that lies ahead? So go ahead, pick up a bottle -- it's only $3.19 on drugstore.com! Just remember to thank this beauty chick when your hair no longer looks like you stuck your finger in an electric socket.

Must-Have Mondays: Keratin Shot at Hiro Haraguchi

No matter how much time we spend on our hair, after awhile it just needs a little TLC. After months of blowdrying, flat ironing and otherwise ruining a perfectly good head of hair, this beauty chick was in serious need of a shot to the head. And that's where the Keratin Shot at Hiro Haraguchi came in handy.

I was pleasantly surprised and contented from the moment I set foot in the salon -- my stylist, Ronnie, was so sweet and took excellent care of me from start to finish. This multi-step process was not only time-intensive but quite labor-intensive for Ronnie as well ... but he handled it all beautifully.

This 45-minute treatment involves stripping your hair of its natural keratin (the protein deep in your locks that gives them their luster and brilliance) and replenishing it full-force, combating the damage from coloring, perming, drying and straightening. To do this, Ronnie began by washing my hair, but did not put any conditioner in it so the proteins would not be stripped. (An added bonus? He told me that my hair was surprisingly easy to comb through without conditioner -- a fact I had honestly never believed to be true!) After painstakingly coating my tresses strand by strand with the keratin, I was left to sit under a massively sized heat lamp for about 10 minutes to really have the product soak in, and was then led back to the sinks for another washing -- this time using conditioner as well.

Then came the best part -- the blowout. I have never had a blowout like this before. Ronnie worked harder than I would have thought possible to leave my locks glowing without the added usage of any product or a flat iron! When he finally lifted his hands from my mane, it was completely transformed. I even left the salon with four miniature vials of keratin to use at home -- once per week to keep my locks shining for up to a month. (And yes, this did happen!)

Now, this treatment doesn't come cheap -- it starts at $150. But isn't that worth it if it means your hair will be glistening, shining and smooth-as-silk for weeks on end?

Shimmer and Glow from Head to Toe

I have somewhat of an affinity for makeup palettes. No matter how many seem to accrue inside my makeup bag, I'm always trying to squeeze in just one more! But one that gets permanent time and attention both in my bag and in my daily makeup routine is the Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick Compact.

Inside this lacquered black box are colors that work wonders not only on a variety of skin tones but in multidimensional, multifaceted ways. Though these compacts -- which come in a whopping five shades for a truly versatile look -- are primarily supposed to be used on the cheekbones for contouring and that healthy, natural-looking glow, this beauty chick loves to use them on my eyes instead!

Currently making a long-standing rotation in my bag are the compacts in both Bronze and Pink. Bronze contains five gorgeous hues of brown, peach and cream, while Pink offers up five beautiful shades of pink, mauve and white, making it the go-to palette for summer! The colors in each are sparkly, glittery and truly pretty -- each lends just the subtlest hint of color that is buildable, blendable and leaves cheeks and eyes looking absolutely flawless. If these two palettes don't excite you, you can also choose from Apricot, Beige and Rose.

Each palette is $38 and available on Bobbi Brown's website -- and the colors last for so long that it will be ages before you have to replace them! Any palette with "shimmer" right in the title deserves extra-long standing in this beauty chick's daily beauty regimen -- how about yours?

And if you haven't already, don't forget to join The Beauty of Life Facebook group!

Shameless Plug: Featured on Glam.com Today!

Pardon this beauty chick for a moment while I make a shameless plug for myself. Aside from writing this blog, I do a lot of freelancing in the fashion and beauty arena -- and my favorite gig is definitely as the fashion and beauty blogger for StyleBakery Teen! I write one fashion story (on Mondays) and one beauty story (on Wednesdays) each week. And today my Luscious Lips story is featured on the Glam.com homepage! All right, enough shameless plugging. Consider my luscious lips sealed!

First Look Fridays: Amber Katz of Beauty Blogging Junkie

I am pleased to bring you this week's edition of First Look Fridays, featuring Amber Katz of Beauty Blogging Junkie! Amber majored in French Literature at Boston University -- and I'm a huge BU fan, as both my brother and best friend went there! With its youthful, conspiratorial tone, shortened words and phrases (totes! fab! gorge!), emphasis on certain words in CAPS, fantastic product reviews and Beauty Blogging Junkie is one of this beauty chick's must-reads every day. She's also absolutely gorgeous, and has hair every beauty chick would literally die for. And I love Amber's references to 80's movies (recent posts included Back to the Future and Teen Witch) and her obsession with the show Lost, the blog is always interesting and fun! Read on to learn more about the fab Amber and her blog!

Why did you decide to start your blog?
I have ALWAYS been enamored of beauty products. I used to "send away" for Bonne Bell kits from the age of 8. I also loved to tear out my favorite beauty tips and products from magazines and would store them in a photo album for future reference. I would make over all of my friends and still receive calls from friends regarding beauty questions at least once a day. I actually started the blog while I was working at my former job in Marketing at a big four accounting firm. I needed a break from writing about "hot" topics in the audit industry and started writing about my favorite beauty products. Before that, I'd found that I couldn't contain my product recommendations even in the presence of 50-plus male accountants who clearly weren't interested in hearing about what hair products I thought they'd like.

I love the name of your blog! How did you come up with it?
OIY. My blog's name is kind of the bane of my existence. Like all writers, I take words and their meanings VERY seriously so it kills me softly that the name of my blog implies that I'm a BLOGGING junkie as opposed to a beauty junkie. I arbitrarily chose a name that was available, thinking no one would ever read it. I intended it to be a sort of outlet for me to write about something frivolous. As it has grown in popularity, it became too late to change! I did, unwittingly, choose a good name for my blog, marketing-wise. It starts with "B," so it's listed near the top of my blogging brethren's blogrolls and it comes up when you do a Google search for "beauty blog."

Do you have a "day job?" What is it?
I work in Corporate Communications at a credit rating agency where I write and edit articles for the firm's internal magazine. Most of my day is spent writing articles about my company's response to the subprime mortgage crisis. It could not be less related to beauty. Today, for instance, I wrote an article about economic stress testing. Then, on my lunch break, I took a few minutes and wrote about lip gloss. Life doesn't get more varied than that, does it? While it's difficult for me to do such in-depth financial writing with a literature/communications background, I feel it provides a nice balance.

What have been some of the highlights of having your blog?
So many, lately! I'm truly amazed at all my blog has afforded me. I love finding out about and, more importantly, TESTING new products in advance of their release dates. Having complimentary highlights and cuts is also a dream come true. But the friends I've made through blogging are the best part. I never knew anyone who was as beauty obsessed as I am and some of these gals' product knowledge puts me to shame!

What are your top 5 beauty essentials?
1) My T3 Bespokes Labs Evolution Hair Dryer. I love this tool more than any dude I've ever dated. Sorry, dudes. It dries my hair in 1/3 of the time.
2) C.O. Bigelow Mentha Lip Shine in #1138. This is a glossy balm that gives you the most divine clear red wash. It moisturizes and freshens breath.
3) Gel eyeliner is so necessary in my lifestyle. There are so many I love, but lately I'm most addicted to Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Espresso Ink. It stays on forever.
4) Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Medium Coverage Concealer can always be found in my purse. It works wonders on undereye circles.
5) Prescriptives Blush More or Less Creamy Cheek Color in Nantucket Dune is a cream bronzer that provides me with a convincing tan.

Playing with products must be fun -- but what are some things you do for fun outside of blogging?
I love reading, writing, swimming and shopping. I can spend hours watching MTV marathons and am, kind of unpredictably, a sci-fi geek. My favorite movie is Back to the Future and I incorporate analysis of the TV show LOST into my blog though it has zero to do with beauty. That's the kind of thing you can do when you have your own blog! You can write about whatever you want.

Are there any other beauty blogs you read regularly? What are some that you like and why?
I read several! My favorites:
1) The Beauty of Life (obv) -- You list fabulous beauty deals regularly and truly know how to identify a drugstore gem. Anyone who reads this blog can tell you're a writer by day as well!
2) Shake Your Beauty -- I find Tia's voice utterly hilarious. I actually subscribe to her blog via email AND check it every minute to make sure I don't miss anything.
3) Beauty Addict -- A phenom SMART beauty resource for info on what to buy and what to leave on the shelf.
4) All About the Pretty -- I find that Julia's site is one of the best for beauty news.
5) Makeup Bag -- Though I'm not a teen (but I am one on the inside), I am shamelessly addicted to Erika's daughter Bree's Teen Corner column.
6) Makeup Loves Me -- One of my favorite sites specifically for makeup. Marina loves bright colors and she recommends interesting products I wouldn't normally consider. She makes them work in a most Tim Gunn manner.
7) Spoiled Pretty -- Fellow Philadelphian Daneen is undeniably entertaining and features a fantastic array of products.
8) Blogdorf Goodman -- Annie's wit is evident and her reviews are honest, clear, and unbelievably concise. She also put me on the "beauty blogger map" by including me in her annual "Favorite Things" list and for that I am eternally grateful.

Now that you know a little bit more about the spunky spitfire that is Amber Katz of Beauty Blogging Junkie, go and read her blog right now! Thanks to Amber for the fab interview!

FOTD: Night Out in Good Ol' Cleveland, OH!

Well, I figured after about a year and a half, it was time for my first-ever FOTD! I leave the absolutely amazing FOTDs to the lovely and talented Vanessa of Nessasary Makeup, but I decided to go for it anyway. Last week I had the pleasure of a dinner out with my lovely friend Megan, who I've known for a whopping 18 years! We dined at the fabulous Hunan China Sea -- my family's all-time favorite restaurant -- so the look was nothing crazy, just a bit more than my usual moisturizer-mascara-and-lipgloss routine! Here's what I used:

EYES:
Sugar Cosmetics ColorStick in Grape Fizz (swept all over the eyelid)
M.A.C Eye Pencil in Coffee (drawn across the eyelid and at the upper and lower waterlines for a bit of extra smokiness)
Dior Diorshow Mascara in Black (two coats on the top lashes -- brushing from the top and bottom -- and one coat on the bottom lashes)

LIPS:
Lancome Color Fever Shine in Pixel Pink
Stila Lip Glaze in Starfruit

HAIR:
Untouched after getting another amazing haircut from the lovely and talented Jen G. at John Robert's!

And here are some photos of the finished look!

Trend-Filled Thursdays: Huge Hair

Walking out the door without havin' your hair all did? Now this is a trend this beauty chick can get on board for! The Fall 2008 shows saw a resurgence of tresses that, rather than hanging limply at models' shoulders, literally rose to new heights. Designers like Diane von Furstenberg and Temperley London and Vera Wang kept it on the tamer side with waves and curls that evoked the sensual seductiveness of a boudoir, while at Luella, Chris Benz and Betsey Johnson, crimping was all the rage. Not to be outdone, Christian Dior and Alexander McQueen introduced a lot of drama into their looks with sky-high pigtails and bouffants. While some of these looks are definitely a lot for daytime -- or, yes, even for nighttime -- in moderation they can all be pulled off brilliantly. Read on to find out how to make the trend work for you!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usImage Hosted by ImageShack.usImage Hosted by ImageShack.us
Evoking The Sexy Provocativeness of Brigitte Bardot
Want that sultry, seductive look that Brigitte Bardot seemed to pull off so effortlessly? It's all in the hair. The key to this look is in the curls.
ExampleStart by spritzing hair with a volumizer like Phyto Phytovolume Actif Maximizing Volume Spray ($28), which will make even the finest, limpest locks plump right up.
ExampleNext, you'll want to wrap sections of your hair around a curling iron. Look for one with a wider barrel, which will create bigger curls and waves than if you pick one that's 1" or smaller (that will give you tight, Shirley Temple-style ringlets, which isn't quite the look you're going for here). Try one like Conair Infiniti Tourmaline Ceramic Curling Iron ($24.99), whose 1 1/2" barrel will create the bigger, sexier curls you need to make this style work.
Finish with a side part, which will make the look seem more voluminous. And voila! Sultry, seductive bedroom hair. Now you just need the bedroom eyes to go with it!

Bringing Back the 80's with Crimping
This beauty chick was huge into the crimped hair look back in the day, so I'm definitely excited that it's making a comeback!
But gals attempting this style should definitely be careful if they don't want to wind up looking like they stepped right out of 1985. The easiest way to do it is to wet your hair, make it into tiny braids and wait until it dries (it's best to do this at night). When you unravel the braids, your hair will be transformed into tons of tiny crimped waves.
ExampleHowever, if you just can't live without styling products -- or you just don't have the time to set all those little braids -- never fear, you can still pull off the look! Start by washing and conditioning hair with volumizing shampoos like Frederic Fekkai Full Volume Shampoo and Full Volume Conditioner ($22 each), which add body and shine without weighing down your strands.
ExampleThen it's time to crimp! The Hot Tools Helix Adjustable Deep Waver, Crimping Iron and 3 Barrel Waver ($34.95) has 10 variable heat settings to really make that style set.
(Photos: Betsey Johnson, Chris Benz and Luella)

Not Just Your Normal Long Locks Anymore
So you don't necessarily want to go all out with your tresses ... but you still want a little extra body and wave. Variations on the runway ranged from hair that had been teased at the roots and parted in the center to locks that were straight at the roots and then waved, curled and texturized from about 6 inches below all the way down to the ends, a la Cynthia Rowley. Whichever you choose, these styles are perfect for summer -- because, let's face it, who wants to spend tons of time on their hair when it's just going to frizz in the 95 degree humidity?
ExampleKey to any of these looks is a good glossing cream or shine spray. John Frieda Frizz-Ease 100% Shine Glossing Mist ($4.49) will add glistening shine without making your hair greasy. Other than that, the best way to achieve this look is to stay away from blowdrying -- just wash and go, and you'll be left with glossily sleek hair that's got just the tiniest bit of wave!
ExampleIf you do want the slightest amount of texture in your tresses, however, try Frederic Fekkai Summer Hair Beach Waves ($22) -- it will give the effect of tousled locks that just came from a day in the sand and surf!

Taking Hair to New Heights
Volume, volume and more volume. Some designers couldn't get enough of the stuff. Is it any surprise that Christian Dior was among them? His bouffants definitely had a flair for the dramatic, as did the updos at Thakoon and Moschino. These styles take a bit more work to pull off, but they all have one thing in common -- boldness! These looks are not for the faint of heart.
ExampleTo achieve an updo like those at Thakoon and Moschino, you'll need a whole lot of bobby pins. Scunci No-Slip Grip Bobby Pins ($3.29 for 48) will help hold styles in place. The great thing about these two styles is that neither is really too "done." Just twist, curl and pin -- the bigger and higher, the better!
ExampleFinish with a hairspray like Pantene Pro-V Classic Unforgettable Hairspray ($4.99), which will set the look in place.
ExampleThe bouffants at Dior are actually not all that difficult to accomplish. It's really all in the styling products. You'll definitely need a good volumizing shampoo -- try Warren-Tricomi PureStrength Boosting Shampoo for Fine Hair ($22), which is formulated with wheat proteins and tons of vitamins to make your hair healthy and strong.
ExampleThen it's a matter of blowdrying and teasing! Flipping your hair over while you blowdry is a sure way to get that added volume you need for this style. Blowdry with the T3 Bespoke Evolution ($300), which not only keeps hair healthy but cuts drying time in half!
