Curious about DuWop products, but afraid to go whole hog and buy full sizes without knowing how they'll perform? Well then you're in luck -- because the DuWop Discovery Kit ($38 on DuWop's website) is here to help. Packed inside a chic pink satin train case are five miniature versions of the items the brand considers to be your essentials for a flawless, finished face. This beauty chick was psyched to try out each of the products to see whether they really should be essentials in her -- and your! -- makeup arsenal.
Lash Lacquer in Carbon Black: I had been curious about this one for awhile. The double-ended wand has conditioning mascara at one end and a shine-enhancing, smudge-resistant topcoat on the other. As I brushed on the mascara, I was hoping for a miracle. While my lashes did look a bit longer and darker, they didn't seem to be any thicker or lusher than normal ... and the mascara clumped and smudged before I had a chance to whip out my lash comb to sweep away the excess. Adding the topcoat didn't really seem to enhance shine -- though it did make the mascara stop clumping and sliding around on my eyelids. The final vote? It's nice to have in a pinch -- just make sure you have some eye makeup remover handy to wipe away the smudges.
Lip Venom: Unless you've been living under a rock, you've heard of Lip Venom. The spicy, cinammon-infused clear gloss purports to plump up your pout instantly. I'm a big fan of this -- while the tingly sensation can border on uncomfortable if you swipe on too much at once, it really does make your lips look shinier and fuller. There's a reason this is one of the most-talked-about plumpers on the market!
Venom Gloss in Lantana: Again, this had peaked my curiosity for quite some time. The tube looks so enciting, and the color -- while a bit more pink than I usually go for -- called out to me. I slicked it on and was greeted by lips that were the prettiest shade of pale pink, accompanied by the usual tingle that accompanies DuWop's lip-plumping products. While I'm not sure if my lips actually looked full and plump, they did really look amazing with the color -- surprisingly more wearable than I would have expected!
Blush Therapy: Blush in a stick brought back horrifying memories of caking on pancake base in stick form during my community theater days (followed by nights with Pond's Cold Cream and a bucket of cotton swabs to try and get the stuff off before it made me break out). So it was with a touch of apprehension that I unscrewed the cap, twisted up the blush and swept it across my cheek. (Yes, just one -- I was too scared to try both of them!) But I'm here to tell you that not only did I survive, my cheek looked absolutely fabulous. It left just the right amount of color and really made my skin glow ... it looked like I had just been frolicking around in the snow and cold. It even seemed to make my eyes sparkle a bit!
Amber Eyes: Since I'm absolutely in love with brown shadows, I decided to save the best for last. Two shades of brown powder -- one a shimmery chestnut, the other a sparkly burnt umber -- surround a deep, creamy, chocolate brown liner. Each of the shadows is truly flattering and really made my eyes look amazing. And while I normally steer clear of any liner that doesn't come out of a pencil, this was shockingly easy to apply with a flat-tipped liner brush, and complemented the two shadow shades perfectly.
All in all, I'd say there a couple of definite hits in this kit. While the Lash Lacquer definitely fell short of expectations, everything here is extremely wearable and is a great way to introduce yourself to some of DuWop's best-sellers. At the very least, the train case is fantastic!
