First Look Fridays: Makeup Artist Dina Gregg

I recently had the pleasure of attending a product demonstration with Three Custom Color Cosmetics. Right from the get go, I was totally amazed by the makeup artist on hand, Dina Gregg. This spunky blonde firecracker was so knowledgeable about product and how to apply it, even making the same two highlighters work on two completely different skin tones! I just knew I had to feature her on First Look Fridays. And so I am utterly pleased to bring you this week's edition, featuring makeup artist Dina Gregg! Dina hails from Boston and has an interesting, varied background that really helped to form and influence her work. Read on to discover more about this fascinating gal!

Can you tell me a little about yourself?
I grew up with a lot of culture and art influences. My mom's from Norway, and both parents love to travel, so that exposed me to other peoples, new perspectives, different aesthetics, traditions and local handicrafts. Mom was my music teacher in grade school, and Dad had been a theater major in college, so my family is basically four silly hooligans who love costumes, singing songs and affecting funny voices and playing characters. As I was the most visual in our house, I guess I was drawn to masks and beards and eye patches and -- yes! -- makeup!

How did you first become interested in makeup, and what led you to become a makeup artist?
You could say that art school (at Boston University) led to beauty school (Blaine) led to makeup school in Paris (Ecole Fleurimon), but I think that it all started much earlier. When I was in first grade, my sister Anika and I participated in Verdi's Aida (presented by Sarah Caldwell's Boston Opera Company, no less), and for a couple dozen performances we were bodypainted with brownish stuff that I can only describe as being akin to slip used for ceramics. Then our blonde heads were SPRAY PAINTED black! And voila! We were Egyptian.

I was also a ballet dancer for many years -- there is a photo of me about age seven, backstage in line to see the blue-haired "makeup lady," and -- though there is much commotion and tulle tutus around me -- my eyes are fixated on the powder, lipstick, cake eyeliner and brushes lying out on the table. I guess a picture really does speak 1000 words.

In my teen (angst) years I turned Goth. Way Goth. I might have been wearing Cleopatra liquid liner, but my skin was not at all Egyptian; instead I had a "Snow White tan." Lots of Coty loose powder and Revlon "Wine with Everything" red lips reapplied between every class. By appearances I was anti-establishment, but all the while my secret vice was fashion. My bedroom was plastered with tearsheets out of Vogue and whatever Ines de la Fressange Chanel campaign had just come out. I was as much in awe of Paloma Picasso and Anh Duong as I was Cindy, Christie, Helena, Naomi and Linda.

And there are many other reasons and ways I wound up here ... but these are the biggies.

What are some of the shoots and shows you've worked on that have stood out as highlights in your career?
I've worked with Karl Lagerfeld twice -- once at the Chanel Cruise collection presented at Grand Central Station, and once at Pier 59 where Karl was taking pictures for Harper's Bazaar. What can I say? Karl is an enigma and a warm man all at once. A self-proclaimed "cartoon character." Gotta love Karl.

Another turning point was making the cut on Pat McGrath's team. My first show with her was Dior Couture in January 2004, and what a testing ground to prove oneself! Ooh la la. You could say it was high pressure. But I just went for it, and when Pat checked my girl's face she only said one word -- "Perfect." I didn't know if I should faint or do a little dance.

Working on Make Me a Supermodel for Bravo TV was pretty rad, too. A really fun experience all around, plus I got to be on set with Tyson Beckford every week!

Have you worked with any makeup artists that inspired you? What did they teach you?
1) Naturally, Pat McGrath. She's taught me countless things, but I'm too devoted to her to spill the beans, except maybe this rule of thumb: when the lips are deep red at Vuitton, keep the peaks from being too "witchy."

2) Denise Markey has shown me how to conduct oneself diplomatically (on set, in business in general) while still being fun to be around.

3) I've learned interesting stuff from Gucci Westman about layering products.

4) I got a nifty eyebrow trick from Dick Page.

What are the products and brands you simply can't live without?
Embryolisse
Elizabeth Arden Eight-Hour Creme
Karite Lips Shea Butter Lip Balm
Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage
Three Custom Color Specialists Mood Lighting Shimmer Cremes -- of course! I created them!
Three Custom Color Specialists Cool Camel Eye Shadow
Bobbi Brown foundation sticks
NARS "Mountain" powder
Makeup Forever Lip Gloss #15
Wet 'n Wild Lipliner #666
Fresh "Here Comes the Sun" blush/bronzer palette
Palmer's Cocoa Butter
Aquaphor

What is the most rewarding part of what you do?
Making people feel great about themselves. To borrow a phrase, I like to "turn that frown upside down!"

What are your top 3 makeup tips?
1) Less is more. Try to adopt the French women's rule of getting dressed, which is to remove one item before walking out the door. The same goes for makeup. In the real world, making up the eyes, cheeks, lips, plus bronzer, etc. is all too much. We are all individuals with unique features. Play with YOUR own face to discover which feature to highlight, and also which makeup steps to OMIT. Sometimes a woman who rocks a signature lip color needn't wear concealer, while another person only needs blush, no mascara, and lip balm. Real beauty is not about looking airbrushed, it's about looking effortless.

2) Curl your lashes! Enough said. I'm not the first to say it and I won't be the last.

3) Moisturize. Inside and out. Drink lots of water and wear cream both day and night. Could be CVS brand or Creme de la Mer -- that's up to your taste. Just so long as you moisturize with SOMETHING!

Playing with makeup must be fun -- but what do you do for fun outside of being a makeup artist?
This summer I'm surfing every chance I get, and also working on some tattoo designs for a couple friends. I'm a pretty curious person, so I love to discover new stuff all the time. I travel quite a bit, but even just tooling around downtown Manhattan on my bike can open up new worlds. Sometimes I go to a bookstore and flip through guide books to places I have yet to visit -- Madagascar, Galapagos, Rio, Micronesia. I love world cuisine as well -- Vietnamese food is my favorite!

Thanks so much to Dina Gregg for this fabulous interview. And be sure to check out her amazing Mood Lighting Shimmer Cremes for Three Custom Color Cosmetics, which really do work on every single skin tone!

Trend-Filled Thursdays: Funky Sleep Masks

I admit it -- I slumber with a sleep mask. Now, this is actually a fairly new occurrence for me. But after rewatching every episode of Sex and the City recently and seeing how chic Carrie looked with hers, I simply had to jump on the bandwagon. Luckily, there are tons of super-fab options out there to let you really sleep in style. Because, really, who wants to wear the same thing to bed every night? Here are my picks for the ones you totally shouldn't sleep without.

Mary Green Kiss Me Silk Satin Sleep Mask ($16 at marygreen.com): The lingerie designer (very luckily) broke into designing sleep masks, and how lucky for us that she did! There are tons of fabulously witty ones available on her site, but this one caught my eye immediately. Who doesn't want Prince Charming to come along and see this mask upon her lovely visage?

Holly Golightly Sleep Mask ($14 at fredflare.com): Blue satin, gold braid and lush lashes? This one was totally calling my name from the get-go. I'm dying for any part of Audrey Hepburn's timelessness, so of course I'm on board with a sleep mask named after one of her most famous characters!

Cris Notti American Beauty Sleep Mask ($20 at crisnotti.com): My absolute fave of the bunch. I love sleeping with this mask on ... so much so that I will literally walk around my apartment for an hour before bed with it up around my forehead, just waiting for the time I can pull it over my eyes and slip into deep, dreamless sleep.

Earth Therapeutics Dream Zone Sleep Mask ($7.99 at beauty.com): What's not to love about this version? It's easy on the pocketbook and easy on the eyes with its soft blend of cotton and silk. And I totally love the starry night pattern, which -- of course! -- makes me want to head to bed even as I'm writing this.

Lusts of the Week

Well, fellow beauty chicks, good news. Today is my Friday! Tomorrow I head to the wonderful city of Cleveland, OH for a dear friend's three-day wedding extravaganza. In my bag -- unfortunately not a carryon, as I have way many outfits and products to pack! -- will be these products for sure. Because what would a week in the life of this beauty chick be without some lust-worthy products?

Stila, Stila Cherry Crush, Cherry Crush, lip stain, cheek stain, lips, cheeks, blush, lipgloss, lipstick, lip gloss, gloss
Stila Cherry Crush ($24 at stilacosmetics.com): Who knew a tiny pen could offer up such fantabulous color? The shade within is the perfect blend of crimson, cherry and scarlet -- yet not so dark that it looks scary or Morticia Adams-esque. The gel, which comes up out of one of Stila's famed lip brush tubes, isn't at all sticky or tacky, and it reacts with your pH levels to create a color just for you! (On me, it's a delightful combination of coral, pink and red.) And what I really love? The cherry scent! It's just present enough to lend a deliciously fresh and fruity aroma to my lips and cheeks without seeming oppressive or over the top. Plus, for a limited time, all Cherry Crush orders receive free shipping with code CHERRYCRUSH at checkout! How cherrylicious is that?

MAC, M.A.C, MAC Cosmetics, M.A.C Cosmetics, MAC Eye Pencil, eye pencil, eyeliner, MAC eyeliner
M.A.C Eye Pencil ($13 each at maccosmetics.com): Ebony. Indigo. Taupe. Coffee. I own all four shades of this glorious pencil, and I seriously can't even express how amazing each of them is. This eyeliner is the absolute best for staying inside the waterline without fading, smudging or creasing. Each time I use one, I'm absolutely amazed at the staying power -- it lasts dawn till dusk with no sign of stopping. And I totally love that each color is perfect for different looks, from smoky and sultry to light and romantic. But my fave of the moment is definitely Indigo, which just makes my brown eyes pop!

Sephora, Sephora Brand, Sephora Silver Swirl Bag Collection, Silver Swirl Bag Collection, makeup bag, makeup bags, makeup pouch, makeup pouches
Sephora Silver Swirl Bag Collection ($16-$38 at sephora.com): I have been loving this collection ever since the Sephora Holiday Preview I attended back in July. Drawing inspiration from Van Gogh's Starry Night, the swirled pattern woven into the durable vinyl fabric is somehow retro and modern all at once. Each of the four metallic silver bags in the collection is totally glam, yet still completely usable -- from the Clutch Bag and Pencil Case to my personal favorite, the Large Handle Bag. This special piece unzips to reveal three smaller mesh cosmetic bags -- absolutely perfect for my traveling needs this weekend, n'est pas?

Wallet-Friendly Wednesdays: Sephora Brand Pop-Up Travel Brush

Sephora, Sephora Brand, Sephora Brand Pop-Up Travel Brush, Pop-Up Travel Brush, travel brushWhen I was in 7th grade, I had this fabulous red pop-up brush compact that I stashed in my locker. It had a special place right next to my mirror. Every day at lunch, I ran to my locker and pulled out the compact, popping out the brush and running it furiously through my hair to make it as shiny as possible before heading into the cafeteria. One of the saddest days of my life was the day that brush broke in half and I had to throw it away. Luckily, now I can stock up on new ones -- and relive the days of my youth -- with the Sephora Brand Pop-Up Travel Brush.

This one is exactly like my fave version from junior high. The bristles don't tug or pull at your tresses, and the mirror is the perfect size for glancing in and performing quick lipgloss or eyeshadow touchups. I'm totally in love with the color, too -- the aqua shade really pops against the dark interior of my bag and just makes it so easy to find at a moment's notice.

But what I really love? The price. This baby is only eight dollars on Sephora's website! Plus, if you're not crazy about the aqua, you can get it in orange -- which transitions ever so nicely from summer to fall. All in all? My junior high days are coming back big time.

Beautiful Belles: Marlo Thomas

Marlo Thomas, Beautiful BellesWe all draw beauty inspiration from women throughout history. Whether we want long eyelashes like Twiggy or pixie cuts like Mia Farrow, something about certain women sparks our beauty interest. And so, I've decided to start a new column here at The Beauty of Life: Beautiful Belles. Each column will focus on a specific icon who's definitely inspired this beauty chick -- and may have inspired you too! Without further adieu, here's the introductory Beautiful Belle.

If you're like me, you grew up wanting to be Marlo Thomas. I memorized the entire soundtrack to Free to Be... You and Me (William's Doll, Atalanta and Ladies First were my favorites) and thought her portrayal of Ann Marie on That Girl rivaled that of Mary Tyler Moore. (I especially loved when she flew the kite with the That Girl logo on it during the credits.) And she just gets more stunning with age -- who could forget her portrayal of Rachel Greene's stylish, full of zingers yet still amazingly sweet mom on Friends?

Marlo Thomas, Beautiful Belles
Thomas' portrayal of Ann Marie garnered quite a bit of controversy, however. As an actress living on her own in New York City, and with a handsome boyfriend whom she never actually married, she was looked upon unfavorably by many -- though the show is considered to be the forerunner for both Murphy Brown and Mary Tyler Moore. But at its heart, it focused on a girl pursuing her dreams and being unafraid to compromise herself or her aspirations -- and she did that while looking amazingly stunning. Thomas' raven-haired locks and big doe eyes, combined with her fantastically on-point wardrobe, made her one to watch.

Since the 1970s, Thomas' charity work has seen no limits. Free to Be... You and Me used poetry, songs and short sketches to impress upon people that we are all actually created equal. With songs like "Parents are People" (a duet between Thomas and Harry Belafonte in which they take on each other's gender stereotypes), the special worked to improve relations and break down the injustices and prejudices in the world. Thomas' work with the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital has also been quite significant.

Marlo Thomas, Beautiful Belles
Marlo Thomas exudes such an interesting combination of grace and sensuality that turns her into the classic girl-next-door. Her fun-loving laugh, raspy and throaty voice, and kindly smiling eyes create such an air of friendliness and positive character. Her beauty regimen has actually not changed much throughout the years -- she relies on eyes lined in black and pink or nude lipstick to keep her look fresh and elegant. The raven hair might be a little lighter, the cut a little shorter ... but her traditional hair flip could actually be considered the precursor to the famed "Rachel cut!" She truly embodies the feel of "That Girl."

Bring Dessert Into Your Shower with Jaqua Raspberry Buttercream Frosting Shower Creme

Jaqua, Jaqua Raspberry Buttercream Frosting, Jaqua Raspberry Buttercream Frosting Shower Creme, Jaqua Shower Creme, shower creme, Raspberry Buttercream Frosting, raspberry, buttercream, frosting, shower cream, body wash, shower gelLooking for an utterly delectable, mouthwatering body wash that's sure to leave you feeling hungry once you've used it? Then you're definitely jonesing for the all-new Raspberry Buttercream Frosting Shower Creme from Jaqua.

This just-launched wash is scented with ripe raspberries and a dash of cake frosting in Jaqua's signature buttercream scent that will really leave you wishing it were edible. (Trust this beauty chick when she tells you it smells good enough to eat!) It's completely indulgent, completely decadent and completely amazing.

But not only does this shower creme smell fantastic -- it lathers up quite nicely, too! Already a fan of Jaqua's shower cremes, I'm totally excited about adding this one to my stash ... its fruit and aloe extracts, macadamia and primrose oils, and tons of good-for-your-skin vitamins like B5, A and E really moisturize and nourish the skin. I come away from each shower feeling refreshed and squeaky clean.

At $18 on Jaqua's website, this shower creme is definitely an indulgence. But at least you can savor this dessert for a long time to come! (A word of advice: It's probably best to use it before meals.)

NARS Gets it Right with Lip Gloss

NARS, NARS Lip Gloss, NARS Lipgloss, lip gloss, lipglossLove at first sight? I'd say that accurately describes my feelings toward NARS Lip Gloss. Each shade seems to be more highly pigmented and colorful than the next ... and the names, oh, the names! There's Frisky Summer (glossy raspberry), Misbehave (shimmering cherry) and Revolt (sheer grape), just to name a few. But my faves are definitely these three:

Risky Business
Stolen Kisses
Moon Fleet

NARS, NARS Lip Gloss, NARS Lipgloss, Risky Business, NARS Risky Business, lip gloss, lipglossEach of these three shades brings something new and different to the lipgloss table. First up, of course, is Risky Business. What child of the 80s doesn't remember Tom Cruise dancing around in his tighty whities and knee-high socks? Drawing inspiration from the movie title, this gloss totally kicks things up a notch with a shimmery berry hue that's not too light, not too dark -- but just right. Whether worn alone or layered over other glosses and lipsticks, this one is absolutely perfect for a night out.

NARS, NARS Lipgloss, NARS Lip Gloss, NARS Stolen Kisses, Stolen Kisses, lipgloss, lip glossStolen Kisses, on the other hand, reminds me of a night under the stars with that special someone. Corny? Yes. True? Definitely. The color, a sparkly mauve inside the tube, slicks on to become a medium-hued caramel that is just soooo super-sexy. I'm a sucker for any coral or peach gloss, and this one just takes things to a whole new level!

NARS, NARS Lip Gloss, NARS Lipgloss, NARS Moon Fleet, Moon Fleet, lipgloss, lip glossBut my absolute fave is most definitely Moon Fleet. Get ready to blast off with this gloss, because the super-high-octane glittery gold will leave your lips more lustrous and glimmery than you ever thought possible. A few swipes across your pout and you'll be sparkling from dusk till dawn. I actually really like to wear this one on its own, rather than layering over a colored gloss -- it really brings out the natural hue of your lips and just adds such gorgeous sparkle and shimmer.

Best of all, these glosses are incredibly smooth and slick. They don't ever start to feel sticky or tacky, and they don't crease or fade unevenly! And while $24 each on the NARS website may seem a bit steep, just remember -- you can't put a price on a pretty pout!

Two-For Tuesdays: H20+ Sea Marine Revitalizing Shampoo and Marine Collagen Conditioner

H20 Plus, H20+, Sea Marine Revitalizing Shampoo, Marine Collagen Conditioner, shampoo, conditionerA bit of a departure from the normal Two-For Tuesdays, today, gals. Rather than show a product duo, I'm going to discuss a shampoo and conditioner pairing that is not to be matched! I speak, of course, of the Sea Marine Revitalizing Shampoo and Marine Collagen Conditioner by H20+. Ever since this one-two punch came into my life, I haven't been able to stop washing my hair!

Now, I know what they say. You shouldn't wash your hair every day or it will strip your color, weaken your strands, cause breakage. But this duo is so gentle on my tresses, I feel my head of hair actually looks forward to the next day's washing and would be sad without it. Not to mention each product smells absolutely fantastic -- fresh, clean and utterly zesty.

The shampoo and conditioner are each formulated with sea lettuce, nori, wakame, sea fennel and marine collagen amino acids to revitalize and renourish dead strands. Vitamins B and E work to moisturize and condition each strand to your heart's content. The end result? Lustrous, shiny, silky locks that literally bounce as you strut down the street.

While a bit more pricey than I generally like to spend on hair products -- the shampoo is $20 and the conditioner is $22 -- the bottles are chock-full of product and will last you for months. (And this comes from a gal that likes to pour capfuls of conditioner over her head!) Each is available at H20+'s website. Trust me -- your tresses will thank you.

Feel the Vibrations with Lancome Oscillation Mascara

I'm pickin' up good vibrations
She's givin' me excitations
(Ooom bop bop ... good vibrations!)
I'm pickin' up good vibrations
(Ooom bop bop ... good vibrations!)
She's givin' me excitations
Good, good, good, good vibrations!
-- The Beach Boys, Good Vibrations

The hype has been huge. For months, rumors have been circulating about the amazingness that is Lancome Oscillation Mascara. The whopping 7000 oscillations per minute that this tube produces are completely unrivaled on the market. So when the opportunity came along to purchase a tube for one day only this past July on Lancome's website, I jumped at the chance. I plunked down my $27 and laid in wait for the tube to arrive, dreaming of the fabulousity that surely laid within.

Well, let me tell you ... this mascara does not disappoint. I was fully prepared to be underwhelmed, especially when Kerry Diamond, the Vice President of Public Relations and Communications for Lancome, told me I might hate it at first. But I tried to keep an open mind and recall all of the wonderful advice Kerry provided me before trying:

"This is definitely a product for beauty junkies," Kerry told me. "When you use it, remember it's a different kind of mascara. You have to go slow and steady. If you zig zag, forget it. And keep the word stretch in mind. Just imagine that you are trying to stretch your lashes as you do it and pull the comb through your lashes. If you get a clump, and you just might, go right back into the clump with the brush and comb it out."

So, keeping all of this handy advice top of mind, I pulled out the black lacquered tube, pressed the handy-dandy button along one side to get the vibrations going, and started applying the mascara ever so slowly to my lashes. Right from the get go, I was seriously impressed. The formula really adheres to the lashes, making them appear longer and thicker in only one coat! I didn't find any thick clumps among my lashes, though there were a couple spots to run through with the brush a couple of times. While there is a lot of product to clean up -- the mascara does feel a bit gooey and wet, and will leave some traces above and below the lashlines to get rid of with makeup remover -- it really does make lashes look fantastic. Each time I've worn it, I've gotten compliments on how long and lush my lashes appear ... so it must be working! Even better, it stays on all night -- even through vicious bouts of dancing -- with no fading or streaking.

My best piece of advice? Don't be afraid of the vibrations! They're very fast, but so tiny that you won't really feel like you're poking something scary at your eyes. I definitely don't see any way that this mascara could hurt you. The price tag may seem a bit high, but I definitely think it's worth it. You can see for yourself fairly soon, as the mascara should be on counters within the next couple of weeks!

Must-Have Mondays: ModelCo Lip Lights Ultra Shine Lip Gloss

ModelCo, ModelCo Lip Lights Ultra Shine Lip Gloss, lipgloss, lip gloss, gloss, lipsOn a recent gals' night out with one of my fave beauty bloggers, Amber from Beauty Blogging Junkie, we -- of course! -- got to talking about our fave lipglosses. And, like the true beauty bloggers both of us are, we each had a stash of maybe ten or twelve knocking around in our handbags. And among the Stila, Korres and Clinique glosses spilled out on the table between us was one absolutely intriguing gloss in Amber's purse. I'm speaking, of course, about ModelCo Lip Lights Ultra Shine Lip Gloss.

The tube holding this gloss is one of the most revolutionary this beauty chick has seen. LED lights are concealed within the lid and automatically light up as soon as you unscrew the cap. Worried about getting the perfect pout in a darkened club? Can't quite see your lips in the restaurant bathroom? Why, that's what these lights are for! They ensure that you have perfect application every time. While the lights can be a bit bright and scary-looking at first, after a few tries you'll wish every gloss came equipped with these babies. And as if that's not enough, the tube even has a mirror along one side -- so if you aren't near a mirror or compact, you'll still have one by your side.

This gloss comes in three gorgeous shades: Coral, Indian Summer and Sienna Sunset. My fave is Sienna Sunset, which is the perfect shade of brownish peach that seems to look good on every skin tone. I love the subtle hint of shimmer within the gloss as well, making my lips seem to glisten and gleam with the best of them. Plus, the gloss is super-moisturizing and not at all sticky or tacky.

Check out the shades for yourself on Sephora's website -- each retails for $28. All in all? You'll totally light up with this light-up gloss!

Scrub-A-Dub-Dub: The Best Scrubs for the Tub

When I was younger, I didn't really understand the power of exfoliation. Why would I want to rub a grainy product all over my body and experience little pops of pain every time I scrubbed too hard? But as I matured, I discovered just how wonderful a good scrub can be. Knobby knees? Gone. Dry elbows? Disappeared. Ashy calves? Seen no more. Well, I can now safely say that I AM HOOKED ON SCRUBS. I've tried more than I can even count -- some of which work, some of which definitely don't -- and I've compiled a list of the ones you just seriously have to try.

Carol's Daughter, Carol's Daughter Sweet Honey Dip Chocolate Brown Sugah Scrub, body polish, body scrub, scrub, exfoliant, exfoliator, body exfoliant, body exfoliator
Carol's Daughter Sweet Honey Dip Chocolate Brown Sugah Scrub ($34 at carolsdaughter.com): Mmm, chocolate. Trust me, that is the first thing you'll think when you open up this tub. I immediately wanted to gobble down the scrub ... I didn't, though, so don't worry! Once I got over my initial feeling of hunger, though, I really started to notice all the cool features of this particular scrub. First of all, I love the tub, which has a silver latch closure that gives it an ancient apothecary feel. The scrub itself is deliciously rich, laced with vanilla bean and brown sugar crystals to exfoliate your skin to your heart's content. Plus, I love how soft my legs feel after using it! There's absolutely no need for a moisturizer, as built-in natural oils will condition and nourish your skin. It's choco-licious.

Klean, Klean Yuzu Sugar Body Polish, body polish, body scrub, scrub, exfoliant, exfoliator, body exfoliant, body exfoliator
Klean Yuzu Sugar Body Polish ($11.50 at kleanbathandbody.com): Pure unrefined Mexican cane sugar. Crushed lemon peel. Apricot kernel. Rice bran. It sounds like I'm getting ready for some sort of cooking class, doesn't it? But no, I'm actually listing some of the ingredients found within this delightful scrub. The crystals are scented with the refreshingly exotic yuzu fruit, which upon smelling instantly makes me think of Japanese gardens. The scrub itself is packed tight, so that when you spread it over your skin it really works to slough away those dead skin cells. And with shea oil baked right into the formula, you'd better believe you'll come out of the shower with the softest skin imaginable!

Chloe & Jane, Chloe & Jane Pure Sugar Body Polish, Citrus Chamomile, body polish, body scrub, scrub, exfoliant, exfoliator, body exfoliant, body exfoliator
Chloe & Jane Pure Sugar Body Polish in Citrus Chamomile ($20 at chloeandjane.com): I don't usually spend much time exfoliating my hands. I moisturize, of course, but I don't really like to rub hard crystals all over my extremities -- it just hurts too much! Luckily, this scrub is light enough for daily use and never maims my sensitive skin. I come away from each use with hands that are so soft and lush, they could be featured in hand-centric advertisements! And the light, relaxing scent is so amazing to boot -- it's perfect for use right before bedtime.

Ole Henriksen, Ole Henriksen Rub N Buff Salt Scrub, body polish, body scrub, scrub, exfoliant, exfoliator, body exfoliant, body exfoliator
Ole Henriksen Rub 'N Buff Salt Scrub ($48 at sephora.com): There are so many good features of this scrub, it's hard to even know where to begin! First of all, the tub is HUGE. Like, so big it would take even the biggest scrub lover in the world about two years to get through the whole, whopping 28 ounces inside. Lavender and lemongrass oils keep skin super soft and smooth, and you won't feel at all greasy or slick after massaging the scrub into your skin. Even the color is appealing -- it's a light seafoam green that just perks up any shower or tub instantly. Plus, I totally love the scent, which has a hint of minty-ness that revives and energizes me in the morning -- perfect for those times when I haven't gotten enough sleep and am basically still sleeping through my shower!

Frederic Fekkai Shea Butter Body Polishing Moisture Scrub ($28.50 at nordstrom.com): I heart shea butter. It's honestly one of my all-time favorite ingredients in a beauty product, since when you use it, you're pretty much guaranteed to come away with uber-silky skin. And this scrub is no different. The grains are enclosed within a creamy, almost body wash-esque texture that feels so wonderful rubbed into the skin. Jojoba wax beads and apricot seeds are perfect for polishing and buffing your skin to a high gleam, while Vitamin B moisturizes and conditions. Plus, it's contained in a slender tube instead of an unwieldy tub -- so it fits perfectly in any shower caddy or along any tub wall!

First Look Fridays: Broadway Star Elizabeth Stanley

Elizabeth Stanley, First Look Fridays, headshot, BroadwayThe career I'd totally want if I weren't a beauty writer? I'd want to star on Broadway. And while I think for me that's just a pipe dream, for the beautiful and talented Elizabeth Stanley it's become a reality. Elizabeth grew up in Camp Point, IL -- a small town of about 1000 people about 30 miles from Quincy -- where she did community theater and took tons of music lessons. After graduating from Indiana University (she and I were in the same choir, The Singing Hoosiers!), she moved to New York City and started doing regional theater. As a member of the cast of Company at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park in 2006 -- she played the somewhat naive stewardess April -- Elizabeth received her big break when she discovered that the show would be moving to Broadway. But that's not all -- this past season saw Elizabeth as Allison in the stage-to-screen adaptation of Cry-Baby! What a dream come true, right? I'm super-excited to bring you this interview with Elizabeth, who was kind enough to share her beauty and skincare regimen with me. And seriously, this gal is so utterly gorgeous -- why wouldn't you want to know how this Broadway star keeps her skin intact, what her day to day beauty techniques are, and even how she prepares for a show each night? You simply must keep reading!

How did you get started in theater?
I was always interested in music and anything dramatic, but I didn't really start doing shows and taking lessons until I was about 12. My parents were very supportive and drove me back and forth, and paid for lessons, etc., but always really left it up to me to pursue it as much or as little as I enjoyed.

What is your daily beauty and skincare regimen -- and does it change when you're performing and wearing a lot more makeup?
I use Bliss face wash, and then follow up with a light SPF moisturizer for the daytime (now that it's summer I'm using the Jergen's healthy glow). At night I use the same Bliss face wash, but use the slightly heavier Burt's Bees Marshmallow Vanishing Cream, and Burt's Bees Royal Jelly Eye Gel. When I am performing, I use the same products, plus I use Clinique eyes, lips and lashes makeup remover. When I'm performing I try not to wear makeup during the days to give my eyes and skin a break! It's also nice to see yourself as you really are, and not so made up!

How do your hair and makeup get done for shows? Do you have hairstylists and makeup artists working with you, or are you responsible for your own?
Every show has a makeup and hair designer. When a show begins, the makeup designer will meet with you as the actor to discuss what their vision is for your character. If you have other ideas, they are usually very open to incorporating them, and also to accommodating certain products/skincare needs you might have. Then they will provide you with the proper makeup and often will do one side of your face and have you do the other side. This is because once a show is running, the actor is responsible for doing their own makeup every night.

Similarly, at the beginning of a show the hair designer will meet with the actor to speak about the ideas for the character's hair. Many times a wig is made. This is because it's easier to avoid bad hair days, and also to maintain a consistent style/color/cut/etc. I love a wig because it cuts down on my prep time before the show! If I'm wearing a wig, then all I have to do is pin curl my hair so that it lays flat to my head and the wig is a snug fit! There is a person in charge of wigs who washes and styles the wigs for each show. That person, or someone on that crew (there are often several people to maintain all the wigs) also helps me get in and out of my wig before and after each show. If I'm using my own hair then I would most likely be in charge of styling it every night according to the hair design.

Is there a regimen you follow for removing show makeup and keeping your skin intact?
See above! Bliss wash! And Burt's Bees! And Clinique! I use a wash cloth for removing my makeup to really make certain I am wiping it all away.

What are some of the highlights you've experienced in your career?
For certain my two Broadway shows -- Company and Cry-Baby -- have been a highlight! Company especially will always hold a special place in my heart because it was my Broadway debut. It was an honor to work with both Composer/Lyricist Stephen Sondheim and Director John Doyle, as well as the fabulous music director, Mary-Mitchell Campbell. In addition, I felt honored to share the stage with such an insanely talented and kind-hearted group of people ... the entire journey is something that I will forever cherish.

Performing on Broadway must be fun -- but what are some things you do for fun outside of the theater?
I love spending time outside, camping, hiking, worshiping the sun! I just returned from a weekend in the Poconos for the wedding of one of my Company cast mates ... we took a great canoe trip on the Delaware River and spent one afternoon picking wildflowers for her bouquet! I also enjoy Bikram yoga, sewing, baking, card-making and painting.

What are your beauty essentials?
I have recently fallen in love with the M.A.C eyeshadow Gleam -- I wear it whenever I want the perfect summer shimmer! I also am addicted to the Tarte lipstain Nectar -- subtle, yet glowing! L'Oreal Voluminous Waterproof Mascara is my long-time fave for the lashes. And I am also a big fan of M.A.C Studio Fix, I first used it for stage because it can be applied heavily to really even your skin tone. But now I love it for every day too -- when lightly dusted on with a brush, it's just like wearing a light powder! And of course, Burt's Bees chapstick, simple minty goodness!

Thanks so much to the beautiful Elizabeth Stanley for taking the time to share her beauty regimen and a little about herself with The Beauty of Life. Keep your eyes out for her -- you'll be seeing a lot of her on the Great White Way in the future!

Trend-Filled Thursdays: The Low Braid

Kate Hudson, low braid, hair, braid, hair braid, Kate Hudson braid, Kate Hudson low braidAs the heat of summer dies down and cooler temperatures will (hopefully) start coming our way, it's time to think about some sophisticated, chic hairstyles to take us from one season to the next effortlessly. I'm totally into the look Kate Hudson is rocking at left. Her loose low braid, accented with side-swept bangs, is absolutely gorgeous. (It doesn't hurt that her chandelier earrings and sparkly gown are to DIE.)

Now, I've been fascinated with braided hairstyles for quite some time. (Click here to check out my love of the side braid.) But this is such a unique take on the style that I simply have to focus on it this week! I love that Kate's hair brings together two different hairstyles in such a unique way. The top of her hair is blown out into sleek, lustrous smoothness, and flows so elegantly into a simple braid that travels down her back. And rather than tying it off with a boldly hued clip or ponytail holder, there's a simple holder that matches her hair. The end result? Absolute flawless perfection.

Curious about how to rock the look on your own? It's super-easy to recreate this look! Read on to find out how you can style your hair into the low braid!

Aveda, Aveda Shampure, Aveda Shampure Shampoo, Shampure, Shampure Shampoo, shampoo, Aveda shampoo
First off, your tresses should be sleeker than sleek. Start with a shine-enhancing shampoo -- I absolutely love Aveda Shampure Shampoo ($9.50 at aveda.com), which brings out shine like no other shampoo I've ever tried.

Next, you'll want to get the shiniest blowout possible. And what better hairdryer to use than the T3 Bespoke Evolution
T3, T3 Micro, T3 Bespoke Evolution, T3 Evolution, T3 Evolution Hairdryer, Evolution, Evolution Hairdryer, hairdryer, hair dryer, blowdryer, blowdryer, T3 blowdryer
($300 at t3micro.com)? Whether you dry with a round brush or just your fingers, this hairdryer will get the job done. Of course, blowdrying with a round brush will get your locks to glisten and gleam -- but if you're short on time, this dryer will still accomplish that in only a few minutes!

Now for the fun part -- the braid! You'll want to gather your hair very loosely and split it into three wide sections. Starting at the nape of your neck, cross one section over the other -- not too tightly, or the effect will be lost. The braid should be clean and finished -- no pieces sticking out -- but at the same time, don't make it too polished or wound up!

Sephora, Sephora Snag-Free Hair Elastics, Sephora ponytail holder, Sephora hair elastics, hair, hair elastic, hair elastics, elastic, elastics, ponytail holder, ponytail holders, braid, low braid
Stop braiding about an inch from the bottom of your locks. Secure the braid with an elastic that matches your hair. The Sephora Snag-Free Hair Elastics ($3.50 each for a pack of 8 elastics at sephora.com) come in three different shades -- Black, Brown and Clear -- that will perfectly match most hair colors.

Ojon Shine and Protect Glossing Spray, Ojon, Shine and Protect Glossing Spray, glossing mist, glossing spray, hairFinish with a shine spray that will bring out even more gleam. One like Ojon Shine & Protect Glossing Mist ($28 at sephora.com), which is formulated with wildcrafted Ojon oil and a UV inhibitor to really keep those strands glossy. And voila! An easy to create low braid that is just so simple and chic!

Great Brand Alert: Klean

Looking for a line of fabulously scented bath and body products that get the job done and don't break the bank? Then look no further than Klean. This line of bath and body products -- encompassing scrubs, lotions, cleansers and perfumes -- is filled with amazingly fragranced items that will leave you feeling fresh and clean. Whenever possible, all-natural products are used in making each item, from cocoa and shea butters to toasted coconut, macadamia nut oil to green tea powder. Best of all, though, are the scents. Each scent -- and there are a lot to choose from! -- smells utterly real, not at all synthetic or processed. And they smell so delectable, you'll find yourself wanting to use four or five scrubs and body washes in the course of one shower! Read on to find out which products really put a smile on this beauty chick's face.

Klean Perfume Oil in California Grapefruit ($11.50): Loyal readers will already know what a huge fan I am of rollerball fragrances. (Click here for a quick refresher course.) The good thing about this one is that it's housed in a much bigger bottle than any of my others -- so it will last for months! I love that it's formulated with sweet almond oil and Vitamin E, which means it's nourishing and moisturizing while lending a delicate sweetness to your skin. The scent is delightfully fresh and zesty, with a hint of coconut and almond that really gives it a light sweetness that's not at all cloying. I even like to roll on a bit before bedtime and let it permeate throughout my sheets, and I swear I've had deeper, more relaxing sleep as a result!

Klean Bath Syrup in Creamy Coconut ($11.50): Now, I am not normally a watery syrup kind of body wash girl. I like my cleansers thick, which -- in my opinion -- gives them better lather and foam. But wow, do I have to eat my words when it comes to this product! When pouring the watery concoction onto my pouf, I must admit I didn't have high hopes. But as I began to smush up the pouf, my concerns disappeared. Suds and lather like I had never seen before started appearing -- and the scent wafting up into my nostrils was just completely delectable. This wash is formulated with shea oil, so it really conditions and moisturizes your skin -- and best of all, it doesn't leave your skin greasy. And at 8oz., it will definitely take awhile to disappear!

Klean Brown Sugar Body Polish ($11): I am a scrub fanatic. I've tried tons and tons of them, some with great results and some totally disastrous. But this one definitely falls in the category of the former. It's rich, it's softening, it's utterly delectable. I love that it's created with a blend of sugars, including pure brown sugar and unrefined Mexican cane sugar. The grains are thick and coarse, and with only a dime-sized amount your legs will shine and gleam to perfection. Plus, I love that there's nothing fake about the scent -- it actually smells exactly like brown sugar. But best of all? It has moisturizer built right into the formula, so there's no need for lotion after you get out of the shower. And it lasts all day long without once feeling greasy or sticky. Seriously ... I use it in the morning and my legs still feel silky and smooth 12 hours later!

All items are available for purchase at Klean's website.

Lusts of the Week

What a lot has happened since my last edition of Lusts of the Week, huh? The amazing Michael Phelps won a staggering eight gold medals, Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson went one and two in the gymnastics all around ... it's definitely got me thinking of products that are gold medal worthy! Check out what I'm totally putting on the medal podium this week.

Cutler Daily Conditioner, Cutler, conditioner, hair, hair conditioner
Cutler Daily Conditioner ($15 at amazon.com): I've been enamored of this conditioner for quite some time. It's utterly moisturizing, super nourishing and makes my tresses glisten and gleam. I love that it's not heavy or too thick, which means it doesn't weigh my hair down and just makes it so, so shiny and glossy. The scent is also so pretty -- it's light and fresh, and doesn't feel at all cloying. All in all? Totally worth using on a daily basis.

Sally Hansen, Sally Hansen Lipnotic Gem Gloss, Lipnotic Gem Gloss, Bling Bling, lipgloss, lip gloss, Sally Hansen lipgloss, Sally Hansen lip gloss, gloss
Sally Hansen Lipnotic Gem Gloss in Bling Bling ($6.99 at walgreens.com): Want a cheap dupe for M.A.C Dazzleglass? Then this gloss is definitely the right one for you. The pigment is rich and deep, and the glitter factor is absolutely unrivaled. A few swipes across my pout and I seriously could not believe how shimmery my lips became! Plus, the shade is super flattering -- it's part peach, part coral, part taupe, part nude ... all gorgeous. The name just seems quite apropos, don't you think?

Jurlique Lavender Hand Cream, Jurlique, Lavender Hand Cream, lavender, hand cream, lotion, moisturizer
Jurlique Lavender Hand Cream ($25 at jurlique.com): Essences of lavender, calendula and viola condition and moisturize even the roughest skin. Don't believe me? Between the hot outdoors and the freezing temperatures inside my office, my hands have become quite ravaged. But a few days with this cream and they've become seriously soft and smooth! In addition, it sinks right into the skin without any greasy residue. And while I usually am not a huge fan of lavender, it's not too intense in this moisturizer. In fact, I feel like I've walked into a spa every time I open the tube! And that's quite a lovely way to feel when putting on hand lotion.

Wallet-Friendly Wednesdays: Revlon Glimmer Gloss Nail Enamel in Grape Shimmer

Revlon Glimmer Gloss, Revlon Glimmer Gloss Nail Enamel, Revlon nail polish, nail enamel, nail polish, Glimmer Gloss, Grape Shimmer, purple, sparkle, shimmerGlitter. Sparkle. Luminescence. So many of these words come to mind when thinking of Revlon Glimmer Gloss Nail Enamel in Grape Shimmer. I bought this polish a few months ago, but it ended up sitting in my arsenal for awhile before pulling it out and giving it a little test drive. And may I just say, wow! I can't believe it took me so long.

This polish is unbelievably shimmery and, well, glimmery.
And while it comes in eight different shades, Grape Shimmer is definitely my fave. The light purple hue is perfect for lending your tips a bit of pop while still somehow remaining work appropriate. The sparkles are touched with blue, which, rather than making your nails look like you've been sitting in a 30-degree room for six hours, actually creates a sort of pinkish violet tinge.

Not only is the color beautiful, the staying power is pretty unbelievable. After a week of wear -- in which I typed, opened tons of boxes, carried lots of bags back and forth to work -- my nails hadn't even chipped! Plus, it's free of DBP, Toluene and Formaldehyde, which means your nails won't be harmed in any way. And best of all? It's only $8.89! (You can purchase it here.) So what are you waiting for? You'd better glimmer and shimmer all night long!

Two-For Tuesdays: Tarte Berry Couture Limited-Edition All Natural Stain Set

Tarte, Tarte Cosmetics, Tarte Berry Couture, Berry Couture Limited-Edition All Natural Stain Set, lipgloss, lip stain, stain, blush, cheek stainAfter literally falling in love with blush a couple of weeks ago (click here to read all about it!), I'm now on a mission to find all the shades and brands that work the best for me. And lo and behold, I came across the Berrylicious Cheek Stain from the new Berry Couture Limited-Edition All Natural Stain Set by Tarte.

I have to admit, this set intrigued me right from the start. The bright pinkish red cheek stain seemed to be way too dark for my pale skin, but I simply had to try it anyway. So I unscrewed the cap, pushed up the chunky round stick from the bottom and went to town, dabbing one circle on each apple and blending, blending, blending. I decided to blend with my fingers, which led to a truly amazing natural flush. I don't mean to brag, but I simply radiated that perfect summer glow! What I particularly love about this blush is that while it feels semi-waxy inside the tube, it glides onto the skin effortlessly and doesn't leave behind any gunky residue. And since it's a stain, it really does make your cheeks gleam naturally.

But as if that's not all, this duo comes with the most amazing dual-sided lipgloss! One end contains Berrylicious Lip Stain, while the other holds Berrylicious Lip Enhancing Gloss. It's rare that I find a dual-ended gloss with two such coordinating and complementing shades, but this one does the trick. The stain is the perfect shade of light red that gives off the just-bitten look, so popular at all the Fall 2008 runway shows. The gloss is a beautiful shade of light coral-tinged pink that, on its own, is fairly sheer. But layered over the stain, the two colors mix and become a stunning deep pink. Best of all, neither side is sticky or tacky -- they're extremely moisturizing and leave lips feeling nourished and conditioned. Plus, they taste and smell of vanilla -- this beauty chick's favorite scent!

Best of all, the products in this set are formulated with Tarte's special t5 super fruit complex. This blend of the five most active superfruits -- goji, acai, maracuja, acerola and pomegranate -- is rich in antioxidants and vitamins. And as if that weren't enough, each purchase of the Berry Couture set ($35 on Tarte's website) supports Sambazon's Sustainable Acai Project (SAP), which helps to preserve the Amazon Rainforest through forest conservation, improved living conditions and educational opportunities for communities in Brazil. So basically, you're doing a world of good.

Must-Have Mondays: The Shu Uemura Lash Bar

Long, lush lashes? I used to think that my tube of Diorshow Mascara was enough to keep me happy. (And, for all intensive purposes, it still does get the job done.) But after my experience this weekend at the Shu Uemura Lash Bar, I have definitely seen the light when it comes to fake lashes.

I'd been on the fence for quite awhile with the whole faux movement. Were fake lashes really necessary when my own were already pretty long and thick? But after a trip to the Newbury Street location of Shu with two of my fave gals, Katie and Emily (we were in Boston for a girls' weekend), all that changed. Suddenly, I found myself inexplicably drawn to the wall of false lashes, incredulous at all the choices and curious as to how I might look with a set.

Feathers or fringe? Sparkles or crystals? There were seriously so many choices, I was at a complete loss for words. Luckily, Tavi -- an absolutely fabulous sales associate on a first name basis with every client who walked in the store -- was there to help. He suggested the Dazzling Black Diamante False Eyelashes ($25), which have rhinestones along the lash line for a gorgeous touch of sparkle.

This is where the process got fun. After picking out the lashes, Tavi sat me down in a chair and proceeded to line both my waterline and lid with a black liquid liner, which really made my eyes pop even before applying the lashes! Then he coated my real lashes with black mascara -- an excellent way to get the faux lashes to stick and look more authentic. After rubbing the fakes between his fingers briskly and coating the strips with glue, he placed them precisely along my lids and made sure they were stuck good and tight before relining my eyes with more liquid liner. The end result? An absolutely amazing transformation! My lashes went from pretty good to large and in charge in only ten minutes. Don't believe me? Check out how they looked!

How it works is this. You pick the lashes, the associate applies them for you, and then charges you for the lashes and application. They even throw in a free bottle of lash glue for reapplication on later dates. (This is great, since the lashes are reusable!) Prices vary depending on the cost of the lashes, but are usually between $40-$50. (The total for my lashes and application was $54.) You can check out the entire line of lashes available on Shu Uemura's website. If you have a special night coming up, this is definitely an option worth looking into. It's offered at every Shu store and counter -- all you have to do is ask!

First Look Fridays: Jennifer and Christine of Beauty in Real Life

I am very happy to bring you this week's edition of First Look Fridays, featuring Jennifer and Christine of the blog Beauty in Real Life. I love reading this blog and find myself going to it several times a week! The blog's tagline -- "Because beauty doesn't have to cost a fortune" -- really hits home with this beauty chick. And how cute is their logo? Jennifer and Christine -- who live in Virginia but have lived everywhere from New Jersey and South Dakota to Las Vegas and Albuquerque -- do a fabulous job of reviewing products honestly and accurately. Every time I read one of their reviews, I know they're really telling me how a product works and whether it's worth the money. (And of course I end up spending way too much money as a result!) They've also got fantastic giveaways several times a month, which just makes life more fun. And isn't that what beauty is all about? Read on to discover more about the fabulous Jennifer and Christine!

Why did you decide to start your blog?
Jennifer: I'll take that one. It started off as a different blog altogether. It was called The Daily Adventures of Mommy J and it basically centered around my family and life as a stay-at-home mom to a toddler. Eventually it morphed into a beauty blog, with some family moments thrown in. I really wanted to have it be a place where I could go and get some of my thoughts out there to whoever might be listening.

I love the name of your blog! How did you come up with it?
Jennifer: Once I decided to focus on beauty, I asked Christine (who has since become my best friend) to join me and have some fun. We kind of decided together that the name should reflect what the blog was primarily about. I literally listed several names and we both agreed on this one ... it fit.

Do you have a "day job?" What is it?
Jennifer and Christine: Stay-at-home moms.

What have been some of the highlights of having your blog?
Jennifer: Getting to know a lot more about Christine, we definitely got a lot closer through this. Meeting other bloggers. Learning about the staggering array of beauty products that are out there and testing them out for our readers. Oh ... and finding out that there are people out there who actually visit our blog.
Christine: Getting to know a lot more about Jenn, ditto on the closer part. Learning more about skincare products and all of the different beauty products there are. Reading the comments from our readers, it amazes me too that people actually visit us each day.

What are your top 5 beauty essentials?
Jennifer and Christine: We literally fall in love with all of the products we see, so we'll say...
1) Mascara
2) Lipgloss
3) Under-eye cream
4) Concealer
5) A facial moisturizer with an SPF of at least 15

Playing with products must be fun -- but what are some things you do for fun outside of blogging?
Jennifer and Christine: Shopping, playing with our sons, manis and pedis, occasional date nights with the hubbies.

Are there any other beauty blogs you read regularly? What are some that you like and why?
Jennifer and Christine: Here goes...
1) Beauty Blogging Junkie: Amber is hilarious. We seriously enjoy reading her postings every day. Her ability to intertwine her posts with pop culture references is absolutely genius.

2) The Daily Obsession: We love the design of their blog. Gorgeous. We both also love their well-edited selections. It's like a beauty and fashion boutique brought to life.

3) 15 Minute Beauty Fanatic: Christine is down to earth and real. Her postings on skincare and sunscreen are so thorough, in depth, and to-the-point. She was also one of the first blogs to add us to her blogroll and that helped get us out there ... we'll always be eternally grateful for that.

4) Spoiled Pretty: Another blogger who is funny and informative at the same time. Her post titles even crack me up. She's also very sweet and gave us some help by adding us when our blog was just starting out. So, thanks Daneen...

5) If it's okay, we have a tie here...
The Beauty of Life and The Daily Cookie: Your blog Jamie, is like a blog written by your best friend. You take your readers along on a journey with each post and make us love every minute. Lilan's blog, The Daily Cookie, is sweet and informative. We love seeing her FOTDs and reading her drool-worthy food postings.

Aren't Jennifer and Christine fantastic?
Thanks so much to both of them for the fabulous interview. Now that you know a bit more about them, you simply must head to Beauty in Real Life immediately!

Time in a Bottle: Philosophy The Soda Fountain

Philosophy The Soda Fountain, Philosophy 3-in-1, Philosophy, shower gel, bubble bath, shampooThere's a part of me that's always wished I grew up in the 50s. Those old-time drugstores with soda fountains just always seem so kitschy and fun. So I was totally stoked to discover the brand-new The Soda Fountain by Philosophy. I totally get the special opportunity of escaping to that soda fountain in the comfort of my own home ... or shower, as the case may be!

Just from looking at the box, I'm immediately transported to the time of pedal pushers and black-and-white televisions. But it's what's inside the box that really counts. Three 6oz. bottles of the brand's famed 3-in-1s (which encompass shampoo, shower gel and bubble bath), each with a more enticing smell than the next, come tumbling out. The three scents included are:

Not the Pits Cherry Cola (smells exactly like Cherry Coke)
Barrels of Root Beer (so deliciously sweet, just like root beer barrels)
Fruit Punch (light, zesty, fruity and with a hint of Hi-C flavor)

My fave is definitely Root Beer, which literally does emanate the aroma of its moniker. Even my roommate swooned when I made him draw in a breath over the bottle! And as is the case with all Philosophy 3-in-1s, the bottles each have a recipe displayed across the front. You can actually learn how to make the three drinks! I will definitely be trying out these recipes, especially the root beer -- which, of course, the bottle says to pour over ice cream before serving.

These three scents are absolutely perfect to take you through the end of summer and into the light crispness of early fall. So why not head to Philosophy's website and pick up your own time machine? It's only $30. Now all that's missing is my poodle skirt.

Trend-Filled Thursdays: Rollerball Perfumes

There is nothing -- I repeat, nothing -- worse than a perfume bottle that shatters. Whether it's all over your bathroom floor or among your luggage, the results can be disastrous. Not to mention it's quite unwieldy carrying around a large bottle for touchups throughout the day. So it's quite wonderful that the latest trend in fragrance is, well, a bit more miniscule than you might imagine. I'm talking about rollerball fragrances, of course! Conveniently sized to fit inside the tiniest clutch -- or even that seemingly inane coin pocket in your jeans -- they last for months and can be whipped out at a moment's notice. Check out the fragrances you'll definitely want to stock up on.

L LAMB Fragrance by Gwen Stefani Rollerball, Gwen Stefani, LAMB, L LAMB, rollerball, perfume, fragrance
L L.A.M.B. Fragrance by Gwen Stefani Rollerball ($25 at sephora.com): A refreshingly exotic blend of floral and fruity notes like water hyacinth, white freesia, jasmine petals, fresh pear, orange blossom and violet leaves combine with musk and frangipani blossom in a gorgeous rainbow-hued bottle. I'd expect nothing less than perfection from the queen of glam rocker style!

Philosophy Falling in Love Perfume Oil, Philosophy Falling in Love, Philosophy, Falling in Love, fragrance, perfume, rollerball
Philosophy Falling in Love Perfume Oil ($25 at philosophy.com): I'm already a huge fan of this scent in the shower gel form -- so when I discovered the rollerball version, I was instantly sold. It's light, fresh and airy and just leaves me with the feeling of utter romance. (Quite apropos with the name!) Plus the gleaming silver top is just so utterly chic.

Bulgari Rose Essentielle, Bulgari Rose Essentielle To Go, Bulgari, Rose Essentielle, perfume, fragrance, rollerball
Bulgari Rose Essentielle To Go ($25 at sephora.com): I am definitely a floral fragrance lover at heart. Lilac, lily of the valley, honeysuckle, you name it, if it's got flowers in it, I have to have it. So this perfume, with its blend of blackberry, violet, mimosa and jasmine surrounding the heart of it all -- the rose -- is just heavenly. And the glistening pink crystal stopper adds a gorgeously stylish finishing touch.

Narciso Rodriguez For Her Purse Perfume, Narciso Rodriguez, Narciso Rodriguez For Her, purse spray, rollerball, fragrance, perfume
Narciso Rodriguez "For Her" Purse Perfume ($62 at nordstrom.com): Yes, this price is exorbitantly expensive. But you know what? For this fragrance, it's totally worth it. Notes of honey flower, radiant amber and tactile woody are so elegant and sophisticated, and I find myself wanting to pull out the rollerball over and over throughout the day. And hey, at least it's cheaper than any of Narciso's way out of my price range clothing!

Stila, Stila Jade Blossom, Stila Jade Blossom Roll-On Fragrance, Jade Blossom, rollerball, perfume, fragrance
Stila Jade Blossom Roll-On Fragrance ($15 at stilacosmetics.com): Green tea. Cucumber. Lemon verbena. What a zesty combination! And it doesn't disappoint, whether you're going for the full-size version or carting around the rollerball. I choose the latter, which means I can dab on the intriguingly fresh scent whenever I need a little refresher!

Beauty Questions: Where Do You Buy Your Makeup?

The beauty chick is back with another round of Beauty Questions! On her mind today ... the burning question every gal interested in beauty would want the answer to. Where do you buy your makeup? Are you an online shopper, or do you absolutely have to see all items before you purchase? I'm a little bit of both -- I'll spend hours at Sephora or at the M.A.C store, playing with products and spending upwards of $80 at a time. Then the next day I'll go online to Sephora.com, eLuxury, Lancome or a ton of other sites and buy even more, sight unseen! What do you do? Let me know in the comments!

Lusts of the Week

How is everyone's week going so far? This beauty chick is doing pretty well, though I threw my back out the other day -- so I'm in pain! Luckily I have some beauty products perking me up while I lie on my back in pain.

NARS, NARS Cosmetics, NARS Albatross, NARS Highlighting Blush Powder, highlighter, highlighting blush, blush, powder blush, Albatross, Albatross blush
NARS Highlight Blush Powder in Albatross ($25 at narscosmetics.com): Until recently, I was staunchly opposed to blush, bronzer, or highligters of any kind. But all of a sudden I'm having a total change of heart ... and this highlighting powder is right at the top of the heap. It's the most gorgeous shade of whitish beige, tinged with a hint of sparkly shimmer, that adds glimmer and shine to the entire face. A slight dusting across my forehead and cheeks and I'm good to go for the whole night!

Philosophy, Philosophy 3-in-1, Philosophy shower gel, Philosophy shampooo, Philosophy bubble bath, Philosophy Red Velvet Cake, shower gel, bubble bath, shampoo
Philosophy Red Velvet Cake 3-in-1 ($16 at philosophy.com): I can't bake to save my life. Well, that's a lie -- I can, I just choose to be lazy and buy desserts instead of make them. So this shower gel, with its deliciously delectable scent of red velvet cake -- it really does smell exactly like it! -- has found a permanent home in my shower. I don't even care that the densely rich shade tends to stain my shower curtain a bit. If I can get this much satisfaction with no calories, I'm totally sold.

Clean, Clean Fragrances, Clean Perfume, Clean Warm Cotton, Warm Cotton Eau de Parfum, eau de parfum, fragrance, perfume, Warm Cotton
Clean Warm Cotton Eau de Parfum ($76 at cleanperfume.com): One of the all-time greatest smells in the whole world? The smell of fresh laundry. I absolutely adore walking by the laundromat on my way home from work and breathing in the scent of clean clothes. And this fragrance smells exactly like that. I actually like to spray it on my sheets before heading to bed, or use it as a room diffuser -- though it smells just as fresh and lovely on the skin. If the $76 price tag is scaring you off, never fear -- there's a 1oz. travel size available for $34!

Wallet-Friendly Wednesdays: Sumita Facial Blotting Tissues

Sumita, Sumita Blotting Tissues, Ziba Beauty, blotting tissues, blotting linensLet's "face" it. Sometimes our skin just gets a little too oily for our own good. Luckily, Sumita Facial Blotting Tissues have come to the rescue. These tiny papers may not appear to be that exciting at first glance -- but once you whip one out of the pack (conveniently sized to fit into even the most miniscule clutch), you'll be instantly hooked.

Made from a natural micro-porous film, these papers are highly absorbent. And that's a good thing, since they're designed to rid your skin of everything from shine and dirt to perspiration and environmental effects!
I love pulling out a sheet and discreetly blotting my face throughout the day. While it is, admittedly, fairly disgusting to look at all the oil left on a single sheet after patting my face dry, it's also a really good feeling knowing my skin is squeaky clean.

My favorite is the Regular version, but if you're a bit more adventurous you can also try Camomile and Tea Tree. And the great news? They're only $6 for a pack of 65 sheets on Ziba Beauty's website. Now that's something worth being a little oily for.

Two-For Tuesdays: NARS Dolce Vita Set

NARS, NARS Dolce Vita Set, NARS Dolce Vita, Dolce Vita, lipgloss, lip gloss, gloss, lips, blush, cheeks, NARS lipgloss, NARS blush, Dolce Vita lipgloss, Dolce Vita lip gloss, Albatross blush, NARS Albatross, NARS Lovejoy, Lovejoy blushDying to punch up your otherwise ho-hum look a bit? Want to take your lips and cheeks from drab to fab? Then look no further than the NARS Dolce Vita Set. This blush and lipgloss set is sultry, it's sensual, it's all around attention grabbing.

For starters, the packaging is beautifully sleek. The blush duo -- which comprises Albatross (sheer, shimmery whitish beige) and Lovejoy (bronzed deep pink with a hint of glimmer) -- is housed within a black compact lettered with, of course, the brand's logo in big block letters. The lipgloss, in the brand's loved Dolce Vita shade, is housed in a thin tube with black top.

But what's really important is the products themselves. Each of the blushes lends the most gorgeous sparkle and sheen to the cheeks. I actually like to dust Albatross across my entire face -- forehead, nose, cheeks and chin -- for a light, dusty sparkle. The tiniest hint of Lovejoy on the apples of the cheeks will create that perfect, "I just came in from skiing all day in Aspen and my cheeks are the perfect shade of rosy pink" flush.

Not only that, the lipgloss creates the absolute sexiest pout. Not too pink, not too red, it's just the right shade of mulberry that can be used sparingly as a stain or more liberally for a wet, glossy look.

All in all, this is one duo definitely worth picking up. And it can be yours for $50 on Sephora's website. Bland and dull is just so not you.

Must-Have Mondays: Ojon Tawaka The White Ball

Ojon, Ojon Tawaka The White Ball, The White Ball, Ojon The White Ball, Ojon Tawaka, exfoliate, exfoliator, moisturize, moisturizer, scrub, bath and bodyI'm somewhat of a scrub junkie ... so of course I need to try out every single one that comes my way. And the new Tawaka The White Ball by Ojon totally satisfied my latest scrub curiosity. I was fortunate enough to check out this baseball-sized genius scrub at Sephora's holiday editors' event last month, and I've been hooked ever since! (The picture at left is from the event.) Designed exclusively for Sephora's holiday collection -- which means it's not available just yet -- this companion to the original, simply monikered "The Ball," is bound to sell out quickly.

A combination of delicious ingredients make up this ball, whose inclusion of white cocoa seed butter turns the ball snow white instead of its companion's deep chocolate brown. This butter is rich in essential lipids, Vitamin E and both oleic and palmitic acids, which moisturizes and softens skin to no end. Also abounding are guarana extract, which stimulates the skin through massage; Ojon and SWA+ oils, which are rich in amino and essential fatty acids to condition and purify dry skin; and passiflora oil, which contains Vitamins A and E to nourish ravaged skin.

Now, a word to the wise ... the ball can feel a bit unwieldy. The size of a baseball, it can be quite tough to hold in the shower -- especially when it's soaking wet! But once you have a good grip on it, and begin rubbing it over dry areas like knees and elbows, you'll see a vast difference in skin texture almost immediately. After using it once or twice a week throughout the last few weeks, my skin has improved beautifully! Plus, there's no greasy residue left behind, meaning my body isn't slick or slimy to the touch like it is after using some scrubs. Best of all, the ball comes with its very own wooden bowl that it can rest in when not in use!

The White Ball will be available during the holiday season and will retail for $65. It was created exclusively for Sephora, and will be available in stores and on Sephora.com.

*Thanks to Beauty and the Blog for the use of this photo.

Enter Another Dimension: Prescriptives Fall Dimensions Cheeks and Eyes

Prescriptives, makeup palette, Prescriptives Daring, Prescriptives Fall Dimensions, Fall Dimensions Palette, Fall Dimensions Eyes and Cheeks, eyeshadow, eye shadow, blush, bronzerDo you remember the show Sliders, starring an absolutely adorable Jerry O'Connell? In each, he and his travel companions slid through different dimensions, trying desperately to get back to their own. (And the episode in which they actually were back in their own dimension and left without knowing it? Heart wrenching!) All thoughts of Sliders aside, the new Fall Dimensions Eyes and Cheeks palette from Prescriptives totally makes my face look like it's entered another dimension ... the dimension of glowing, ethereal beauty!

Part of Prescriptives' Daring collection, this palette is comprised of three eyeshadows, blushes and bronzers that highlight and contour your eyes and cheeks to utter perfection. They're housed in an absolutely stunning palette of gleaming, glistening smoke-hued leather, crafted with faceted raised detailing for added shimmer and glimmer. The shades inside include taupe, chestnut and lavender, each dusted with just a hint of sparkle.

Rather than use one shade at a time, I like to take a large kabuki brush, run it over all the shades in the palette and sweep over my cheekbones for a subtle yet totally gorgeous glow. If you do want to split the colors up, however, the lavender is my favorite -- it adds a beautiful glittery lightness to the eyes.

This palette retails on Nordstrom's website for $35. It will be available for a limited time only, so you'd best scoop yours up before it's too late!

Sit Back and Relax with Molton Brown Relaxing Yuan Zhi Sleep Mist

Molton Brown, sleep mist, Relaxing Yuan Zhi Sleep Mist, Molton Brown sleep mistNow I don't know about you, but I've always been a bit skeptical of sleep mists. Can essences of lavender, ylang ylang and other "relaxing" ingredients really make anyone fall asleep faster? Well, color me impressed -- and consider my mind changed for good -- ever since I started using Molton Brown Relaxing Yuan Zhi Sleep Mist. This bottle, which does have the aforementioned lavender and ylang ylang in addition to bergamot, really does seem to help me fall asleep faster. We're talking within minutes -- and I have the chronic condition of laying awake for hours before bed, even when I'm exhausted!

The mist, which has an intoxicatingly fresh scent that I just can't seem to get enough of, comes housed in a gorgeous violet-hued glass bottle, claims to "promote inner peace and encourage restful, healing sleep." I can honestly say I find this to be the case. I've been using this mist for the last week, spraying it liberally over my sheets and pillows, and I have fallen asleep within minutes. What's more, I stay asleep -- no waking up in the middle of the night for any reason! And best of all, I really do feel rested and completely at ease when I wake up in the morning.

Now, this mist doesn't come cheap, as it retails for $44 on Molton Brown's website. But for anyone who's had problems falling asleep in the past, you should definitely give it a try. What's the worst that can happen? You get a good night's sleep?

First Look Fridays: Makeup Artist and Beauty Blogger Agostina Lombardo

Makeup2Beauty, beauty blog, First Look Fridays, Agostina, Agostina LombardoMakeup artist. Beauty blogger. Agostina Lombardo. This fascinating gal somehow finds time to do both jobs! I had the pleasure of meeting her at the Total Beauty Summit back in May, and I was so impressed by her credentials and her long, storied past as a celebrity makeup artist in Los Angeles. This past year saw her as the makeup artist for Ellen Degeneres, which of course got everyone at the Summit so excited! Agostina is represented by the Cloutier Agency in LA, and she also runs the super-fabulous blog Makeup2Beauty. Raised in St. Louis, Agostina attended Webster College and has since lived in Chicago, Paris, Milan and now LA. Keep reading to find out more about this amazing woman!

How did you first become interested in makeup, and what led you to become a makeup artist?
My first introduction to makeup artistry was in college, in the dance/theater department. I was used as a model to show the dance department how to use makeup -- I think I was more interested in the makeup session than they were, LOL. Then I discovered Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and Elle magazines and I fell in love with fashion -- I had found my passion. And knew this was the path I needed to go on, so I became a makeup artist.

Have you worked with any makeup artists that inspired you? What did they teach you?
When I first started as a makeup artist I had the pleasure to work with Linda Cantello and Anne-Marie Bartholew. Linda Cantello was a Vogue makeup artist and taught me how to think outside the box using color. Anne-Marie Bartholew was a French Elle makeup artist who taught me about beauty makeup and what it takes to be a professional. I've also learned a lot from the models and actresses I have worked with like Iman, who early in my career showed me how to do makeup properly for women of color. And Faye Dunaway, whose tips and tricks help me to refine my application for women over 40.

What are some of the shoots and shows you've worked on that have stood out as highlights in your career?
Highlights in my career have been my first job with Harper's Bazaar. I was given the cover, 6 pages of celebrities and 4 pages of beauty. After this issue hit the stands, my agent received calls from American Vogue and Italian Vogue for work. This sparked my major career in fashion, giving me the opportunity to work with some of the most famous photographers and biggest supermodels of our time. The next major highlight in my career was when I first started to work with celebrities like Nicole Kidman, Jodie Foster and Meg Ryan for fashion magazines, covers and editorials. This launched my career in the celebrity world that I still work in today.

Why did you decide to start your blog?
I started writing Makeup2Beauty because as a professional makeup artist I'm always being asked questions regarding beauty. I felt women needed to hear advice from a pro who wasn't biased, and from someone who truly had their finger on the pulse of today's beauty.

I love the name of your blog! How did you come up with it?
I wanted a name that was simple and to the point -- something that was easier to remember than Agostina, LOL. And Makeup2Beauty just seemed to fit the direction of my blog.

What have been some of the highlights of having your blog?
1) When my readers tell me how much the information I've given them has helped them out.
2) And meeting wonderful people like yourself. (Editor's note: Awwwww! Thanks, Agostina!)

What are the products and brands you simply can't live without in your makeup case?
This answer is subject to change, but right now I'd have to say:
1) Bobbi Brown Correctors and Concealers
2) Shu Uemura Nobara Creams
3) Dior loose powders
4) Chanel Pro Lumiere Foundations

What are your top 3 makeup tips?
1) Moisturize before applying concealer/foundation -- this will help it to not look dry and cakey. Then after applying moisturizer, wait 20 minutes or so before applying concealer and/or foundation -- this way your makeup isn't absorbed into your skin.
2) To cover really dark circles, use a salmon-colored concealer, not a yellow-colored concealer.
3) To get your eyeshadow to last, apply face powder on your lids first before applying powder eyeshadows.

Playing with products must be fun -- but what are some things you do for fun outside of blogging and being a makeup artist?
I love going to art museums, listening to good music, visiting with friends and family and going to the movies.

Are there any other beauty blogs you read regularly? What are some that you like and why?
1) Lipstick Powder N Paint -- It was the first beauty blog I had ever read, so I like to check in from time to time.
2) Beauty's Spot -- I enjoy how Laurie presents her post.
3) Makeup Junkie -- I like how Joy writes from the viewpoint of a makeup artist and a writer.
4) The Beauty of Life -- I like how it's always fresh and with original content. And you always have the best ideas, with excellent copy!

Thanks so much to Agostina Lombardo for this absolutely fabulous interview. Now be sure to head over to Makeup2Beauty immediately -- and be on the lookout for her makeup artistry on the red carpet and editorials!

Beauty News: Bliss Spa Online Appointment Booking!

Bliss, spa, Bliss spa, online appointment booking, spa appointment, spa booking, spa appointment bookingHUGE news, fellow beauty chicks. One of my fave spas, Bliss, has finally gone the way of the future and installed online appointment booking on their website! I am so super-excited about this new development. While I don't mind calling spas to book appointments, it's always so hard to get the time and date I want for Bliss, not to mention I'm competing with so many other attendees that I end up waiting on the line for at least 10 minutes every time I call. So I'm totally going to be using this new service, which is available right on the Bliss website, every time I want to book an appointment from now on. It's spaaahriffic!

Experience the Citrusy Goodness of Hollybeth's Citrus Body Cream

Hollybeth's, Hollybeths, Hollybeth's Citrus Cream, Hollybeths Citrus Cream, moisturizer, lotion, body cream, body moisturizer, body lotion, creamRarely do I come across a product that smells like food and get the urge to actually want to slather it all over my body. But such is totally not the case with Hollybeth's Citrus Body Cream. Upon opening the tub, my first impression was that it smelled exactly like Trix Cereal. But that darned rabbit isn't getting anywhere near this cream ... it's all mine.

Right from the get-go, I was sold on this moisturizer. It has the texture of thick whipped butter, which just feels sinfully rich gliding onto the skin. The scent of Trix permeating throughout is due to the combination of bergamot, litsea, orange and citrus oils baked into the formula, which aid with stress relief, relaxation, purification and revitalization, respectively. Essences of sweet almond oil, beeswax, borax and even tea tree oil can also be found here, which moisturize, soothe, soften and condition the skin to no end.

Now, a word to the wise. This cream is GREASY. I warn you of this fact because, while it will soften your skin immensely, it could leave grease stains on your clothes or sheets if you're not careful! There's not a label on the top saying: Less is more, apply cream & let dry before dressing for no reason. I applied this before bedtime and waited a good 20 minutes before slipping under the sheets.

That being said, this is an absolutely fabulous choice for a really thick moisturizer to use before bedtime. It's especially great on dry areas like knees, elbows and heels -- and my ashy calves are definitely benefiting from nightly use! You can get your own for $22 on Hollybeth's website. So what do you think, are Trix really just for kids?

Trend-Filled Thursdays: The Side Part

Emmy Rossum, red carpet, side part, hairForget parting your hair down the middle. At Fall 2008 Fashion Week, the side part was all the rage. Seen everywhere from Akris to Donna Karan, models strutted down the runway with their tresses pulled to one side. It's even trickled down to celebrities, with gals like Emmy Rossum, Rachel Bilson and getting in on the act. And whether you're going for a sleek updo or wavy, flowy locks, this style can work for you! Center parts tend to make the face look a bit wider, while the side part can elongate your puss and sleeken your entire do. Read on to see tons of pictures that will inspire you ... and for tips on how to create the looks yourself!

GRACEFUL UPDOS

These looks may seem tough to pull off, but never fear! They are a lot simpler than they appear. Whether you want to look super-polished or a little more rough and tumble, a French twist or a bun will reign the look in just so. Here's how to create it from start to finish.

Frederic Fekkai, Sheer Shine Glossing Mist, glossing mist, shine, shiny hair, Frederic Fekkai glossing mist, gloss, glossy hair1) Using a wide-toothed comb, pull a wide chunk -- at least two inches -- over to the side. Either side works, just decide which one looks better for your face!
2) Pull the remaining tresses into a low bun or French twist and secure with bobby pins.
3) Spritz a shine spray like Frederic Fekkai Glossing Sheer Shine Mist ($22.50 at bathandbodyworks.com) over your entire head, concentrating especially on the front part that you've left out of the updo.
4) Pull just a bit at the updo to make it a bit more textured and give it a tousled, slightly messy look.
5) Voila! An easy-to-create, side-parted updo!

DOWN BUT NOT OUT

Whether you're going for straight and sleek or a bit more tousled and undone, this look is so super-sexy. And just like the looks above, they are fairly simple to accomplish. Here's how you can get the look.

1) A good blowout is key here! And you can accomplish that at home. Using a blowdryer like the T3 Bespoke Labs Featherweight Dryer ($200 at sephora.com), your locks will fall effortlessly into this style. If you're looking to make your tresses pin-straight, use a round brush to pull each strand out to its fullest. For a more undone look, you'll want to curl your round brush around each strand as you blow them out to create a bit of a wave.
2) Use a wide-toothed comb to part your hair down the side. As in the above looks, pick the side that looks better for your face!
Jonathan Product Silky Dirt Shine and Define Creme, Jonathan Product, shiny hair, shine cream3) For the straight look, finish with a shine serum like Jonathan Product Silky Dirt Shine & Define Creme ($28 at sephora.com), which will infuse your locks with a ton of shine.
Phyto Curl Defining Spray, curl spray, Phyto4) The more undone look needs a bit of tousle! Phyto Curl Defining Spray ($26 at sephora.com), a styling mist with moisturizing passion flower extract, will do just that.

Cheery for Thymes Red Cherie

Thymes, Thymes Red Cherie, candle, Red CherieI am passionately obsessed with candles. I can't help it ... if I see an interesting jar or smell an intoxicating scent, it's all over. I have to have it. To that end, my entire apartment is cluttered with candles. At last count, I think I had about 40 laying around. (And no, this is not an exaggeration.) One that I kept staring at but never lit was my Thymes Red Cherie Candle. I've literally had this one for about six months and it remained in its box, just waiting for the day I decided to light it.

Now, in all fairness, I don't really light candles in the summer. It's just too darn hot. But last night was an exception ... I turned off the air conditioning for awhile, settled down to read a book and -- lo and behold! -- my eyes fell on this candle. It seemed to be calling to me, just waiting to be unwrapped from its packaging and lit. And so I obliged ... and, oh my goodness, what on earth I have been missing!

To start with, the jar is absolutely gorgeous. A leafy vine wends its way around subtly frosted glass, creating an air of tranquility and calm. It's so beautiful, it simply begs to be put on a vanity or dresser in a place of importance. But once lit, wow. The blend of sparkling pomegranate, cherries, passion flower, lychee and fruity musk is simply delightful. It's not too strong or heavy, and doesn't leave my apartment smelling like ripe fruit for days ... instead, it's understated and elegant, the absolute perfect scent for a night spent curled up on the couch with a good book and a heavy down comforter.

So I know what you're thinking. Such an amazing candle must cost a fortune. Well, you would be wrong! It retails for only $25 on the Thymes website. Even better, this candle burns for up to 40 hours. But now that I feel guilty about not burning it for so long, I have a feeling those hours are going to tick away quite quickly!

Totally Blown Away by Blow Styling Salon

Blow Styling Salon, Blow, blowout, hair, hair blowout, blow outI have to admit, I am pretty good with the at-home blowout. I dry my hair in sections with clips and everything! But once in awhile I like to pamper my hair and really treat it right ... so I decided to head to Blow Styling Salon, New York's answer to the perfect blowout, for the royal treatment. There are two locations -- one in the Meatpacking District and one on The Upper East Side. I chose the latter, as it's literally three blocks from my apartment.

From the second I stepped in, I was greeted enthusiastically and treated warmly. Everyone who works there is truly friendly and makes you feel right at home. As I waited for Yana, my hair expert of choice, I surveyed the room and saw three absolutely perfect blowouts sitting in front of me ... which I must say instilled quite a bit of confidence in me!

Once seated in front of Yana, we discussed what to do with my hair. I mentioned that I usually blow it out stick straight, so she asked if I'd like a fuller, bouncier version. I responded with an excited "Yes!" and she got right to work, washing and conditioning my hair first in the basin behind her station and even giving me a little head massage. As I watched her blowdry my hair -- in sections, using clips! -- I was truly impressed with her technique. First she would pull my locks out straight with a round brush, then began twisting and curling them around the brush and blowing the hot air ever so lightly across them. This made them have just a hint of curl and a whole lot of sexy bounciness. A few mists of shine spray and a part to the side and my hair was utterly unbelievable. Don't believe me? Here's a picture for proof!

I was totally happy and satisfied with the results ... especially when they lasted for two days! If you're interested in making an appointment at Blow, check out their website for contact info and full details on the menu of services. Blowouts range from $40-$60 depending on hair length and texture (mine was $50). I'm betting you'll be blown away, too.

Lusts of the Week

It's Week 1 of my new job at Bergdorf Goodman, and so far so good! But of course I have a few beauty products up my sleeve just in case things get tough. Here's what I'm totally loving this week.

Proactiv Refining Mask ($20 at qvc.com): I've resisted the allure of Proactiv products for quite some time. The commercials and magazine advertisements just never seemed to be for real. But after using the Refining Mask for a couple of weeks, I can safely say I've changed my mind. Just a dab of this creamy mask -- infused with soothing tea tree oil -- left on my blemishes overnight and they are gone by the morning! While the old toothpaste on zits trick may work for some, this is totally my new acne fighter of choice.

ghd, Thermal Protector, hair, hair protector, heat protector
ghd Thermal Protector Spray ($25 at ghdhair.com): I've tried tons of serums and sprays meant to protect my hair from heat styling, and up until now none of them have worked. They leave my hair feeling coarse and heavy, and I don't see any real difference showing in my tresses from using them. But this one is totally and completely different. A few spritzes before blowdrying and flat ironing and this keeps my locks totally frizz-free. They're so shiny and glossy, and at the same time it doesn't feel like it's coating my hair with heaviness or weighing it down. Furthermore, I can still run my fingers through my hair without it feeling sticky or greasy. All in all? Totally worth it.

ELF, elf, elf cosmetics, Candy Shop, lip balm, lipgloss, lip gloss, lip tin
e.l.f. Candy Shop Lip Tins ($1 each at eyeslipsface.com): I'm a total lip balm junkie ... and while I love slicking it on out of a tube, once in awhile I really like the tin form. And these are my absolute faves, with their old-school design and absolutely delicious flavors. The most delectable? Cherry Bomb, which tastes exactly like maraschino cherries and leaves a gorgeous hint of red sheen on the pout. As 50 cent would say, "Let me take you to the candy shop."

Wallet-Friendly Wednesdays: Sephora by OPI

Sephora, Sephora by OPI, OPI, nail polishFifty-four shades of polish? Sounds too good to be true, doesn't it? Luckily, the new Sephora by OPI collection -- launching this month at Sephora stores and Sephora.com -- is totally unbelievable both in sheer number of shades and in the actual hues they've created.

Sheer. Opaque. Light. Dark. The collection has something for everybody, from shimmery reds to glittery blacks, creamy grays to sparkly pinks. (See a selection of the colors at left.) And best of all? They all ring up at under $10 -- $9, to be exact. I love the thick rubber tops, which are super-easy to grab and hold while brushing the color onto your nails. The bottles are a tad difficult to open the first time -- they must have been sealed with the utmost precision -- but a teensy bit of struggle is so worth it once you get to the shades within.

Sephora, Sephora by OPI, OPI, nail polish
My total fave is definitely Metro Chic. This shade is an interesting mix of gray and purple that glides on creamily and easily, leaving no streak marks and lasting forever. (Case in point: After nine days, my polish was still relatively chip-free and even still looked as though I'd painted it on a day or two earlier!)

Keep watching Sephora's website to see when the collection launches. It should be soon -- and trust me, you'll want to stock up!

Thanks to Beauty and the Blog for the photos!

Blossoming with Elizabeth Arden Green Tea Lotus

Elizabeth Arden, lotus, Green Tea Lotus, green tea, fragrance, perfume, scent, aroma, Elizabeth Arden perfume, Elizabeth Arden fragranceOn my continuous search for the perfect summer fragrance, I recently stumbled upon Elizabeth Arden Green Tea Lotus. A few words spring to mind when thinking about how to describe it, among them crisp, delicate and fresh.

A beautiful blend of floral and musky notes is utterly enchanting in Elizabeth Arden's latest perfume venture.
Top notes of ume plum, cherry blossom, yuzu and mandarin combine with middle notes of aglaia, blossoming lotus, green tea, osmanthus and jasmine tea, while base notes of musks and white birch finish it off. Part simple and part completely alluring, it seems to sparkle and glisten in the air, creating an exotic feel.

While I normally don't like musky scents, I love that this one isn't too heavy or cloying once on the skin. It dries down lightly, shimmering and creating an almost fragrant halo. It's not too overpowering, and I love that it evokes the feel of an ancient Japanese garden positively littered with lotus blossoms.

This fragrance retails for $37 on Elizabeth Arden's website. It's the perfect summer scent -- so you'd better stock up soon before fall rolls around!

Two-For Tuesdays: The Body Shop Stop Violence in the Home Shea Lip Care Stick Duo

The Body Shop, lip balm, Stop Violence in the Home, duo, gift setWhat's better than slicking on a really great lip balm? Slicking on one that helps to end domestic violence. So the new balm duo by The Body Shop, Stop Violence in the Home Shea Lip Care Stick Duo, is definitely something worth looking into.

Community Trade shea butter from Ghana and tons of vitamins (A, C and E to be exact) keep lips soft and super-smooth. The formula isn't at all waxy or sticky, instead it's moisturizing and emits the faintest delectable scent of coconut.

All proceeds from the sales of this duo go toward The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. This organization provides support and services to women and children affected by domestic violence.

The duo itself is crafted in an ingenious "one for me, one for you" design -- a round card holds two of the tubes. If you're feeling generous, you'll share with a friend ... though if you're like this beauty chick, you may have to just drop the $15 on
